Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Biggest problem Beto has is he’s clearly playing a league or two above his level.

He’s about 5 yards off the pace of the game, we really struggle when he starts matches. He’s ok once other players around him have tired around 70ish mins as it’s a leveller.

Fresh from the start you can see he’s not at this level.
DCL has very few striker's instincts. He's good in the air and with his back to goal but can't link play intelligently. He can't stay onside - little tactcal intelligence there. He often makes the wrong runs in the box. He is one of the worst finishers I have ever seen play as a striker. And he has come through academy systems, not KFC. So what's his excuse?

Beto might not be the standard, but people don't half overplay the difference in quality between the two. Wouldn’t have either in my team, if we could get better, but I know which one I would back to score goals - and it ain't Calvert-Lewin.

Crazy that Thelwell gets a free pass on Beto because he was pay nothing up front and then pay 25 MILLION!!! in a years time.

People honestly believe that was a sensible deal to do? Not one striker in the world we could have had last season at his level or better that didn’t have a crazy price tag attached?

NO IT WAS AMAZING HE DID THIS WITH HIS HANDS TIED… NO BAD MOUTHING OF THE CONK.

No pass here, he needs to go too. KT reeks of comfy know your place BK Everton. Too many excuses have been made for him yes we have had financial constraints but the recruitment has largely been poor and misaligned with what we need. Also simply put the lack of psce and goals in our squad are the glaring issue with what he has done here.

Beto might score a couple more goals, maybe, over the course of a season.

But I’d be fairly confident it wouldn’t translate to more points.

Look at the Bournemouth game for example, Calvert Lewin and Ndiaye on and we looked comfortable.

Doucoure and Beto on we lose 3-2. Beto is just nowhere near the pace of a game, he doesn’t get across his man, he can’t win headers, he’s late in the challenge. He doesn’t know how to make clearances into 50/50 balls. Watch him next time he’s on and you’ll see what I mean.

I do agree he’s probably a better sniffer than DCL though. But so was Beckford and he wasn’t a premier league striker either.

DCL is very good at certain things when he’s on it, stuff that Beto will never be able to do. He’s just not great in front of goal, not a great paradox for a striker.

Bournemouth have spent £250m net the past 3 years.

We need to do likewise - hopefully we spend it well.

This is basically it. Like people kind of get fixated on the fact they've spent well, which they have, but they've also spent an absolute fortune, most of it net.

The same for the likes of Fulham, Brentford, Villa etc and it shows.

Like we carry on like 2018 was a disaster after we spent about 200m (100m net) and came 8th. It's a different world.

Thats why I think DCL would be much better in a better team, playing as a number 9 with better players on the end of his knock downs.

Hes switched off for us, whether he can get it back for somebody else is up there.

Maybe wee Davey gets his mojo back.

But Beto aint a PL Striker for me.

It wasn’t that though. It was pay nothing up front now and then start paying £25m in yearly instalments (most probably £5m per year) over his playing contract next year.
The biggest issue is that someone paid, overall, at least £20m too much as a transfer fee for a willing footballer who looks like he’s being stung by wasps when he runs

I don’t think Beto would stand out in the championship.

He’s a decent poacher, he’s basically 6’4 Beckford. Just not a premier league player at all.

Maybe so but we scouted Beto for TWO years so that suggests it was our recruitment and scouting that led us to him too. Does not speak well of them, neither does that massive lack of pace and cutting edge in the team. We have Chermiti and O'Brien on the bench though

Players we have "bought"..

JOB 20m
Ndiaye 18m
Tim 10m
Beto 25m
Chermo 12m
Onana 35m
Dwight 17m
Maupay 12m
Garner 10m
Gana 4m

Currently I make that 70m that could and should have been spent better.

70 million for ten players? All of those look good value except for Maupay and possibly Beto but the only reason he was signed is because they deferred any payment for 12 months. That’s literally buttons spent on the others. You’d have to be incredibly lucky to get 10 players for 70 million who are genuine quality.

JOB 16.2m
Ndiaye 16.9m
Tim 10m
Beto 25m
Chermo 12m
Onana 33m
Dwight 17m
Maupay 9m
Garner 9m
Gana 2m

= £150.1mil

Onana £50mil sale
Maupay £8.4mil sale
= £58.4mil

Grand total = £91.7mil remaining on 8 players.

£11.462mil per player.

Are:
O'Brien
Ndiaye
Iroegbunam
Beto
Chermiti
McNeil
Garner

...not worth that? Gana isnt due to age.

I reckon we'd be well up if we wanted to move those players on.

I blame thelwell. He’s been atrocious.

Name 2 or 3 permanent signings that hes made who are atrocious?

Maupay we all know he didnt sign
Beto yes but there are caveats

So who?

£25mil in a years time? Erm no mate. Its a 4 year deal where we simply deferred payment with zero year one and no doubt the weight on the backend.

"Not one striker in the world we could have had last season at his level or better that didn’t have a crazy price tag attached? "

How many teams would give us their starting centre forward and 1 in 3 goalscorer -- in a top league for a relegation threatened team -- for zero downpayment ?

A striker in one of europes top leagues who had a 1 in 3 goal scoring ratio, available for free. It was another fit option to a horrible squad who had 1 premier league striker who hadn’t been fit for at least 2 years.. If the club weren’t so dreadfully mismanaged financially and there were actual down payments to be made Beto would have been a footnote on the transfer target list

Whenever the £25 million was due, we still have to pay it.
We didn’t need to sign a starting striker from a top league with a 1 in 3 goal record.
We needed someone that could control a football and hold the ball up with his back to goal, given that was the turgid style of play we had.

Laughable that you are suggesting we couldn’t have done better 🤣

Beto at Udinese = 48games worth of minutes / 21 goals.

So yeah, more closer to a 1 in 2 player...in Serie A.

Perhaps you could name a team who would give us their player with those numbers with zero money down?

You wont be able to.
