Everton January transfer window 2021

People slate Barkley yet he looks very good at Villa - sometimes a move elswhere is needed for players who go stale at their club.

He does come across as a bit of a tit but as I said previously our squad quality is awful outside of the starting 11 so we are in no position to be turning our noses up at a player with the potential quality of Ali.

Ali Ali Ali

OI! OI! OI!
For what may be the first time, I agree with you there mate.

He could definitely take the place of Gomes/Sigurdsson.

Not sure on Dele Alli.

2016/17 was his peak...2017/18 still very good but i think hes been on the way down since then.

Seemed to be in the papers alot with his gf and maybe just done a bit of a John Stones...
My problem with Alli is how he plays. It is kind of Sigurdsson like in that he's a midfielder but his value is mostly in doing things in and around the box. He isn't a dribbler, he doesn't control games and isn't the greatest at transitioning play. When he's in the right system and the team is on top he can have a massive impact but I don't think he's a player that will work in every team and I really don't think he would in ours.

he’d be another square peg in a round hole. Adding to the growing number of square pegs.

just doesn’t fit how we play, unless a change of formation is planned which then brings other concerns because it then effects others on the team and adds more in-balance

Also if you're changing formations to find a spot for Dele Alli in our team then he still doesn't get in because James can play that position better.

exactly, so you either forfeit James or play the pair which then causes all sorts of weird shizzle that I don’t want to even think about

put this down to: agent actively seeking to move on client

Perhaps it is Don Carlo's long term to introduce more square holes?

Christ, if your gonna lie, at least make it believeable.

Wigan invited Everton over to scout a Chelsea player? Totally ignoring that we have scouts that watch every game played in England?

Nice try, but no mate, nobody will believe that.
I'm talking our top recruitment staff.....

Really? I mean I don't know anything about this pursuit of James. But seems unlikely Wigan would be trying to help sell a player to another side. What's in it for them? Pissing off the team they loaned from?
Of course Wigan weren't trying to sell a player they didn't own. They were alerting Everton about an outstanding talent. I'm sure that goes on a lot.

Well thats all true, but he is only 24. I mean you can't always assume every play improves until they are 25, has 5 top years then declines. But there is probably some short term mean regression that can happen with Alli.

I think a loan deal makes a lot of sense. His wages won't be that high at Spurs (even if we had to cover all of them) and at his best he's shown he is close to being world class already (people were talking of him being a 100m player). He has struggled for a couple of years, but as you guys say, sometimes you "buy the dip". I don't see much downside on an initial loan deal.

Formalising an agreement, for what would likely be a big fee becomes more challenging.

Hes not getting in ahead of James and hes not joining as backup.

I guess he would take over the Sigurdsson / Gomes position.

However, that to me also wouldnt make much sense as we'd be better off with a defensive midfielder if we play a 3.

@catcherintherye he was looking like a £100mil player, he knocked in 18 league goals in 2016/2017 but i dont think he has more than 8 or 9 since.

That would be ok if he contributed alot in all round play but hes a bit Sigurdsson.

For spurs getting him when we went for Galloway theyve done very well. Also fits in with the core of the team we have around his age with Holgate, Godfrey, Richarlison and DCL.

I think id prefer a superstar RB or DM myself though.

Khedira coming in on loan until the end of the season is a far better option than Delph.

Granted his age is not ideal but we are still a young side and his experience would be great.

I mean there's a lot in that. Unlike Sigurdsson he gets goals mainly in open play, he's quicker, bigger, stronger and probably a bit more creative than Sigurdsson. I think he's got a lot of the Cahill about him, maybe not the attitude but more natural gifts than Tim had.

Your personal preference may be for a DM, and longer term that may be what we look for, but in the short term from January any improvement would be good. He would be a big improvement on what we have.

He can also fill in up front, which I wonder if part of the thinking. I do get the comment above they prefer it to be Richarlinson, but if they want a third option he can be it. He did it bit for Spurs last year and if I remember looked quite good doing it.

As with RB and DM position, I would agree but I think it misunderstands the nature of the January window. It is very rare you are going to get the solutions to a major problem. You are very unlikely to get a soution to your problems. If one exists, in honesty you are going to let them sweat on it, as the price is likely to go down by the time the summer comes.

A lot then assume it's a window you do nothing. I'm not so sure. This year in particular will see a lot of caste offs available, and in truth it is a window for taking caste offs. As caste offs go, on a 6 month loan arrangement, at 24 with wantiong to get back into that England team, he ticks a lot of boxes for me. I'm not saying we go and plunge £50m on him, but if he's available on loaning, paying some of his wages, it's a no brainer.

We are lacking squad depth as well. Who knows where the squad will be come January, but with the potential of a semi final in the league cup, and hopefully an FA Cup game, it is a yes for me.

Finally I do appreciate he is not a £100m player now, but that is his ceiling. It's a higher ceiling than almost all of our existing players. I don't know if you can get him close to being right, but it's a low risk high reward option.

He has scored 9, 5 & 8 since that 17 goal season. The big thing for me though, is they are mostly in open play, that is a fantastic goalscoring record, and very Cahill esque.
