James and Allan are very unlikely to sign another deal at this level. It isn't a bad thing when you're adding quality but you need a core of younger guys. We have very few. Even Doucoure is closer to the old category.

Age won't effect James so much, he was never one to rely on athleticism anyway.

Pickford, Holgate, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, Iwobi, Godfrey are all under 25 (well Pickford is 26 but goalies go longer etc) and then above that you have Keane, Digne, Gomes, Mina who are all just above that range.

That's before taking into account Nkounkou, Davies, Branthwaite and Gordon.

It's not like we are not doing what you are saying even if the "quality" part can easily be debated.

The age thing is so overrated anyway. If you are good enough you are old enough regardless of which side of the age spectrum the player is coming from.

We are signing young hungry players to play now, some for the future, some in their prime and some who you will get a year or two from. That's pretty standard when building a squad.

Wouldnt mind us getting Khedira on a short term deal 1 year deal, gives us a cdm and could help push allan at cm give bim more freedom to chase the ball. Then hopefully bring in another cf to cover dcl
Khedira missed 29 games in the 18/19 season through injury and 31 games in 19/20 through injury. He'll be 34 next April. The suggestion we should be looking to pay any actual money to him is frighteningly absurd.

For me only Richarlison and DCL get into our core of good players from the young players list. Pickford stinks. Godfrey and Holgate aren't automatic starters in their main position. Iwobi isn't a top guy even if he's done better of late.

To me our core, as in the guys who are no doubt playing every time out if healthy, is DCL, James, Allan, Doucoure, Digne, Richarlison and Keane. That isn't that young and the middle of the park specifically is pretty old.

The situation is fine right now but if every window is like last summer it will pretty quickly not be.

Ferdinand ,Stam ,Keane ,Cantona, Schmeicel .Irwin all played major roles
You need a mix

would be nice if he could stay healthy and gradually revert to a pirlo type of role. his balls have eyes, he'd be perfect in that position

Of course but a reference to a Fergi team could be any number of at least 4 squads with no overlapping names to the ones you mentioned. Better than maybe anyone in english football history he understood that clubs sustainability was not being complacent, and always having an eye on the future. Our position and pool is good but isnt that sustainable without more assuring investments in cover in the places where sell ons are likely at some point, or with the players that will begin to decline post their primes. Simply put we need more appreciating signings and congruency with our next generation squad simultaneously if our good present results will culturally sustain with new players. However high this good side goes it is a bit fragile in rolling over to a new core in the likes of key players leaving relatively soon (likely) and or decline from father time with key starters in the next 3 years.
