Everton January transfer window 2021

For me only Richarlison and DCL get into our core of good players from the young players list. Pickford stinks. Godfrey and Holgate aren't automatic starters in their main position. Iwobi isn't a top guy even if he's done better of late.

To me our core, as in the guys who are no doubt playing every time out if healthy, is DCL, James, Allan, Doucoure, Digne, Richarlison and Keane. That isn't that young and the middle of the park specifically is pretty old.

The situation is fine right now but if every window is like last summer it will pretty quickly not be.

Yeah agreed with the ability level of the players but what we think about them isn't really that relevant. They have been buying the types of player you are suggesting we are not signing you just don't like them (understandbly in some cases).

DCL, Keane Digne, Doucoure and Richarlison are not old at all and none of them are over 30 (well one may be if they have had a birthday lately?)

We signed Branthwaite and Godfrey this summer (well Branthwaite was January), at the time we lacked a complete midfield and we did not have time to let a young one bed in.

This summer past we only bought Godfrey. The majority of our money went to older players. And that's fine from time to time but we will have issues at some point if we always do that is all I'm saying.

I actually think the squad is well balanced at the moment but signing Khedira and Zaha would undue that, imo.

Neils ????
If he actually becomes part of the first team picture maybe. But as we've played a bunch of non-left backs there ahead of him I'm not counting it now.

Also he was a free. So long as they aren't on massive wages (Khedira, Bernard) it isn't a big deal to sign anyone on a free.

To me it isn't just age but value in relation to likely sell ons where the key for more assuring prospects with first team potential becomes relevant. Fact is the likelihood that DCL Digne and Richarlison staying at Merseyside both individually let alone collectively is slim. That is fairly foreseeable and such being the case significant investment in high ceiling cover with similar profiles is more than a practical expectation. The same should be the case with players that will be approaching the back end of prime years in the not so distant future. Some cheap U23 long shots in Niels and Branthwaite are smart and diversify your asset pool, but you cant expect all if any of those to end up first team players. This is to say in the filling of a squad especially considering the age invested last window additions have to be appreciating and as cover be considered with potential as a major variable.

To me Khedira and Zaha are completely different signings. One is a short term loan, to help tide us over. Fairly low cost in terms of fee, no long term commitments, easy to get out of.

The other would require a comparatively large fee, for a declining asset. Short of Palace being relegated, I don't see it. It would be a poor signing in my view.

Even with their relative ages, I think the prices we paid fro Doucoure and Allan was very good. Allan has shown enough to me, even when his legs go he will be able to sit in front of the defence and do a job. Doucoure was a lot better than what we had. For what we paid, we got good prices.

50+m on Zaha is a world away. I don't see us doing that at all.

I'm not sure what you're seeing for this because it is really not what he does right now. He's going for it all the time. And he's also gotta keep his hamstrings intact which I'm a bit worried about.

Ultimately not bad signings at all but the point is you probably can't restock the team with a new Allan every 2-3 years so some of the players have to last longer.

And while yes Khedira and Zaha are different longevity is not something I'd associate with either.

Well true, but a 6 month loan deal for Khedira wouldn't be for longevity. It would be about seeing if we could go from say 8th to 6th or even 4th.

We also signed Brainthwaite in January, to go alongside Godfrey and Neils. Thats a 17, 19 and 22 year old.

The team we stuck out on Saturday had an average age of 25.

You can see Brands influence is still here, but it is nuanced. It's not just about stockpiling teenagers. When you look where we are in the league, it's hard to argue it hasn't been a success.

As an aside, I could see 1 or 2 younger players, particularly like Nkounkou potentially arriving over the next 2 windows as well. When you see the covid situation in France, which looks particularly bad (as their TV deal hasn't just declined by collapsed) there will likely be all sorts of opportunities. Lucky old Brands made the strategic decision to bin off scouts from the likes of Scanadanavia, Portugal etc and focus more resources in France eh?
