That's 2 years down the line. The hope would be Davies is 24 and coming into his prime and improving. That Gbamin will have nailed a place down at 26. Maybe Onyango surprises us and is around the team at 19.

As for Khedira, I think the bigger worry is people under estimate the ability of players who get to play for elite teams like Real Madrid for years. We have seen it with James. When hes 35, he will still be easily good enough to get into the team.

It's a short term v long term argument. There needs to be a balance. But we also need to improve in the short term, which we are doing. The owner wants quick success.
Khedira has never been big on pace. He's also suffered two MASSIVE injuries over the last 2 seasons which is going to slow him down even more.

5 tough games in a week in a season where nobody trained for 3months.

But sure, its his "age".

Hes 29 for Gods sake.

Its a prime age for a footballer.
Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Keane, Iwobi and Doucoure are playing every week and fine. Allan, James and Coleman all have niggly muscle injuries. I can't help the facts.

Yep, thats me done for tonight.

I'm just highlighting though where this paint by numbers and ages gets us. Yes maybe Allan and Doucoure fall off a cliff. But maybe Davies kicks on. Probably neither happen, and over the next 2 years we add another younger midfielder from a position of strength.

But you cant just use it 1 way. You cant just say, x,y or z are getting older and will decline while ignoring the concept that younger players should improve.

Holgate only just back, Mina has spent a lot of time injured, Gomes also, Kenny only just back, Iwobi has been injured recently also, hell even Niels was injured a few weeks ago, Branthwaite also.

But sure, only older players get injured.

Holgate broke his foot. Kenny rolled an ankle. These are different than having a bimonthly muscle strain.

No excuse for Mina and Gomes, they're hurt too much, but we genuinely don't have an older player who hasn't been doing this so far.

The thing with Khedira is that he wouldn't have to charge around all over the place. It's a bit overrated as an attribute. The best players read the game well and make good decisions. There is pace and movement around him, Iwobi has helped in that regard, an we have a manager who knows how to develop a system to get the best out of different players.

In terms of positioning, reading of the game etc he will be well ahead of all of our midfieders. Probably a bit like Gareth Barry when he arrived. He won't be signed unless he is fit, so I take that as a given.

The signing of James has opened my eyes a fair bit. Even at walking speed he's better than most of the league. The same will be true for Isco and Khedira. They were world class players.

In an ideal world he would be like Barry. But khedira has not spent his career in England like Barry. Reading the game is a lot easier when you are familiar with the league and up with the pace of the Premier league.

big disagree about Alli: he lacks pace and has seen his best days. If Mourinho wants him out there must be
good reasons.

This team does not want slowish, older players like Khedira but dynamic, fast, skillful players with lots
of potential.

I'm not sure about that, most of the clubs he goes to he falls out with someone. I remember his 2nd stint at Chelsea, Mata won player of the season and next season Mourinho removed him from the team and he was sold to Man Utd. He fell out with Casillas and Pepe at Madrid, Martial at Utd, Queresma at Inter and that's the tip of the iceberg. It doesn't make all of them terrible players or bad players, because they fell out with Mourinho.

Not having Khedira at all.

Imagine a starting midfield containing Gomes, Khedira and James... Snail like.
I don't think there is any chance of that barring injuries but even just Khedira and James is bad. Part of Doucoure and Allan's value is having the legs to cover spaces for James while he makes the magic happen.
