Everton January transfer window 2021

Oh good, Zaha again
I just can't believe how hard it is for people to watch a player and understand what role he is performing. Zaha has played striker in a 4-4-2 in EVERY SINGLE GAME and people still think he's someone who we should spend 50m on to play on one of our wings. Yeah he's scoring a lot of goals because he's a good attacker who is now playing striker!

Sorry, just tired of seeing it.

We might need 1, but we certainly don't need to spend 50m on them.

If we can get a quality player in then I'd like to think our recruitment team can make the finances work.

Bailey might have been £20-25m in the summer. He had a poor season - relatively, like Zaha - last year, but has bags of talent. He'd probably cost £30m next month, but would Leverkusen let him leave... He'd definitely be worth it.

It's crap, because this is the season we do need to scrabble around, because of everything that's gone on.

But... this is also the season where we really shouldn't be scrabbling around over a few mil because of what's on offer, given our start.

He's a forward.

We play, ideally, a 4-3-3. That's three forwards, not wingers. James and Richarlison don't play as wingers in a 4-3-3. Mane and Salah don't play as wingers, etc etc

There's a big difference.

Signing a player like Zaha to play on the left in how we're currently playing would be pointless, I agree. But we don't want to be playing like how we're currently playing (system wise, not results wise obviously) for much longer.

Ok but we can do this too. We have two goal scorers in Richarlison and DCL and desperately need more creativity. Zaha hasn't been an above average creative player basically ever. The best he can do on that front is earn a ton of penalties. So I still think it is a bad fit.

Plus winger or not he's not played consistently on the right since about 16/17.

It just is a bad fit for a player who isn't worth what his club wants and is older than what we should spend big on.

As though there’s no other attacker in the world to buy. I wish Spurs or someone else would just buy him already to stop the calls for him.

There are plenty of other attackers.

Not sure there's one who would suit us as well that's realistically available from a Premier League club, but there are definitely other options.

We need pace and power in those forward areas. Can't have another midget like Bernard or headless chicken like Iwobi - as much as he's worked hard for the team in the last few weeks.

Bailey, Lukebakio - that Raphinia type player (great signing for Leeds, really is).

It's a player that should have been got at the end of the last window.

We can do that, but playing a 4-4-2 isn't going to get the best out of James is it? So if James is fit, we won't be playing 4-4-2 anytime soon.

Is that Lukebakio that played 1 game for Watford before he was fired from a cannon?

Its a no from me.

Yes, I know, Salah, KDB, Lukaku, but still.

I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is if you're bringing in Zaha for 50m he has to start, we don't have 50m for non-starting players money, so he either probably has to play the left or right with James playing centrally. Whether that is 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 that is really only what makes sense.

But Zaha doesn't really play the right (or starting this season the left) so you're already moving his position just to fit him. Possibly you're also moving Richarlison. All of this to accommodate a player who you're spending 50m on and still isn't good enough to move your current attackers in favor of.

I don't know it just doesn't make sense to me on basically any level. Now that we have James I just can't see a single reason.

50 million is a lot to spend for a player that would either be pushed out by James in our best system, or necessitate James to be a bigger part of the defense by playing in the middle of the pitch.

I think we need to find a true creative wide player. I'm concerned that moving Zaha over there is like asking DCL to drop back and go get the ball - he can do it, but you're not getting his best when you request it.

If we're going to keep Richarlison around we really need a winger who is a creator first. James is obviously that but I'd like to see him in the middle sometimes too. All these names, Zaha, Lukebakio, Bailey, they're all goal scorers first. Which isn't bad but we just have that area really covered.

It is why Buendia makes a lot of sense to me.
