Godfrey has played CB at a solid level for us a grand total of 0 times. I can't believe how certain people are that this was a top signing. Have we learned anything from the first impressions on Bernard, Gomes, Iwobi, etc?
First impressions for iwobi is a while ago now his last impression gave us a goal... Topsy turvy days

Not really suggesting that.
For the record I'm struggling to see where Holgate and Godfrey fit into the first team, currently.

We need better than them both at fullback and neither have been truly proven at CB.

But both are good talented lads who play at a very high level, in most games they play and players like them are invaluable to any team wanting to go places.

Of course you need BETTER above them, but still.

Are we sure? He's certainly got the physical attributes. His effort and determination is all the way at the top. Does he position himself well? Is he good enough in the air?

I don't know the answer and I just don't know how anyone can be certain right now.

Well positioning is something you generally learn as you get a bit older, or work under better managers. Farke's approach isn't exactly defence-first, is it?

Physically he's there, which is a massive boost for a player in his position.

It means his improvement is going to come from fine-tuning, coaching and experience. So far the signs are promising.

Also, I really don't think he did badly the other day v Rotherham. Our problem was in midfield. Keane didn't look great, and we know he's been superb lately, against Rotherham. We had Davies and Gomes offering zero protection to the defence in front of them, and Coleman and Digne equally exposed as well.

Defending is all about working as a unit. It's something we've hardly done since Moyes left, so it's good to see us - by and large - doing it now. Just need to work on making sure we have a threat at the other end too, but the injuries haven't helped that.

Midfield of course.

That's sarcasm before someone comes in here agreeing with me.

I feel the same about Holgate and Godfrey: I really don't know if they're any good or not. It wouldn't shock me if they were playing for West Brom permanently or starting regularly and pushing us to Europe in 3 years time. I just can't tell.

I suspect Holgate will possibly move on within the next 18months.

He will want to play every week somewhere.

Crossing is one thing but my biggest thing is we need someone who like Digne can be a solid player in building things up. Seamus lack of positioning and passing ability makes it really hard to work it down the right when he plays and causes a ton of giveaways.

I just want a player who can work both ways. Defend like Holgate positionally then make sensible use of it going forward. They don’t have to be Danni Alves. Holgate and Godfrey are showing both Coleman and Digne that their defending ha left a lot to be desired. There’s a lot to be said for players just doing the basics of staying in position, blocking crosses, marking the back post, and passing forward effectively. Coleman and Digne weren’t doing those basics enough at the start of the season.

I think that is in play but I also think him making a spot here is too. I like Mina but he's had some not so good moments and that habit of not getting clearances out of danger is going to see him dropped sooner or later if he keeps doing it. So Holgate could slide in and be the guy and never look back. Or Godfrey could. Or they both could have goes that leads to us realizing Mina is the best.

It all feels completely fluid because Keane aside who for me has been our best CB since Koeman left everyone seems to be a similar level. They've all got strengths and flaws.

The amount of crosses Digne and Coleman allow into the box has been shown up by Godfrey and Holgate being so aggressive in getting out to them.

Digne's issue for me is that he's not particularly athletic for a fullback. Guys just go by him.

But I get what you mean. All I'm saying is if all he has going forward is passing decent and not giving the ball away I could live with that given we've got Iwobi and James operating well over there and Digne doing the business down the left.

Cant believe posters want to sell Godfrey and Holgate, they both make Keane and Mina look better, because they possess one thing Keane and Mina severely lack...pace. As a unit defensively the last 7 or 8 games we have definitely looked a lot more solid at the back.

Safe to say even Keane has flaws mate.

But at the moment I think we've got a good CB unit. Need a right-back - it should have been done already and for me is a major failing of the recruitment not having the foresight to do it.

Other than that, seems a pretty good platform to build from.
