Everton Summer 2024 Transfer Thread

But if we are merely talking in terms of budget for a CM, the total for a Phillips loan (loan fee and say 50% of wage) probably isn’t less than the down payment for a 15m permanent signing.

I don’t think we should think of Phillips on loan as the “cheap” option. It would be a significant expense for no guaranteed performance and no potential return.

Performance and return is never guaranteed, no matter the transfer.

After O'Brien - I just can't see us having the money for a winger and CM.

Ultimately, I think this;

There's a reason he played every single minute for England on the way to the final - and why Man City signed him.

He just wasn't a good fit for Man City, and he well off match fitness for West Ham in Jan.

If he's still got appetite to play, which at 28 he should have in spades - then a good pre-season and we have a £40m+ player on our hands.

Also - a reminder we're on the bones of our arse, so much so we're having to renew Ashley Young and pray Leeds don't get promoted for Harrison.

Nobody will know the lads temperament/attitude - but I do know the player at Leeds and England is our best centre midfielder.

He was never a Man City player IMO, and West Ham was an obvious waste of time.

The England / Leeds form was a long time ago. What about the one at City and West Ham?

This , in my opinion, would turn out to be yet another expensive Everton mistake.

Phillips last played for England in Nov 2023.
Alli probably mid 2019.

Expect Phillips is an expensive loan - best case he is great for us for the season then City sell him on.

Worst case he's lost it and we pay a lot for a benchwarmer and help City out with their wages - ie. a Dele, Gomes, Van De Beek etc.

Think Dyche would get Phillips back to his best in no time. He's a very good player in very bad form trying to fill in for the best CM in the world with zero confidence. If we can get him on loan, he'd be a very good signing.
I'm sure Moyes thought he could get the best out of him too

If Pep and Moyes , two very different managers and characters failed why do you think Dyche can work the oracle?

It was only this time 2 years ago he'd just played every minute for England to a final, and Man City paid a few bob for him.

You quoted my post when I mentioned;

  • He just wasn't a good fit for Man City, and he well off match fitness for West Ham in Jan.

Not being good enough for Man City doesn't mean he's not good enough for Everton.

And he'd barely had a kick for 2 years before West Ham thought it would be a good idea to throw him in, January.

And like I've been saying - we need bodies and we haven't got a lot of money. We should be using every loan space - if we can get another on loan like the lad at Chelsea or whoever, then great but I can understand why we'd be in for Phillips.

It'll be interesting to see how he does, wherever he goes. Apparently Villa want him, that would be a mistake on his part.

Disagree I’m afraid. How many times have we said this before with taking players (loan or transfer) from other premier league clubs who are surplus to requirements and/or are on a downward trajectory?

Most, If not all, fail miserably and are either still at the club or take hundreds of thousands with them.

We’ve been a financial mess for years partly down to deals like this.

We’ve actually been a mess thanks to the big deals we struck. Siggurdson Tosun Bolasie Schendierlin Allan Doucoure Keane Godfrey Klaasen - they’re the big ticket items as to why we’re in a mess amongst many others. None of them except Schendierlin could be described as surplus to requirements or on the way down.

The loans of Lukaku and Barry (one surplus to requirements, one surplus and on the way down) actually worked out very well for us.

Walcott is one that springs to mind as an overpayment for a player on his way down and that was borne from panic buying to stay up in 17/18 under Allardyce.

I certainly agree that the move to Villa would be a bad one for him. He needs to play and he won't get in their team.

2 years is a very long time in football.
