Everton Summer Transfer Thread - 2022

I thought he was fantastic defensively the other day. Ok he didn’t have a quality attacking RB to deal with, but he had sancho, Rashford and later on Elanga.

….that’s fair enough, Stephen. I don’t like him in one-on-one situations. He stands face on with his feet planted and invariably fouls the opponent running at him. That’s fairly basic for a full back but fingers crossed he irons those things out. He certainly seems to have enthusiasm for the game and the club.

i like him.

I agree with everything you say there, the difficulty with wages though is they're never as easy to reduce as people suggest. A lot of players will have automatic wage increases built in to their contracts, maybe as much as a 10% increase in some cases. Then you get players like Gordon who got a contract a couple of years ago when he was a young lad on the fringes, you can imagine his agent knocking on the door saying he's a key player for you now he wants double that. The same applies if you bump the likes of Branthwaite up the pecking order, although to a lesser extent. Then you've got the possibility of some players just becoming next year's equivalents of Tosun and Delph. We definitely need a better striker than Rondon as an option and after Townsend's injury you can imagine him potentially becoming unwanted, but there's a good chance that they're both going to end up staying on the wage bill.
That certainly will happen but it also means that the club has a more valuable asset. Twelve months ago Gordon probably had minimal value but I would guess that he is probably worth somewhere between 30m-40m now.
I think the club will be happy if these young players continue to improve as it increases the value of their assets ( players) and possibly still somewhat cheaper than signing some one from abroad on probably higher wages who may prove to be a failure.

I don't think our problem has been the wages of the players playing every week it has been the number of players just not contributing to the squad.

Pickford, Richarlison, Godfrey, Gray, DCL are probably earning a lot of money but are valuable assets for the club to play or at worst sell.

No you're right, I agree with what you're saying, I just mean you often get people saying 'we'll be saving £150k p/w in wages' or whatever, but in reality much of that can end up being swallowed up by increased wages for existing players. As I said, the other issue is that some of the players who are contributing to the squad (nominally at least) this year can end up being millstones if they aren't in the plans next year. Rondon, Townsend, even Alli based on recent weeks could all end up being high earners who we don't really use.

Absolutely not - the type of player that's got us in the mess we're currently in.

No, the type of player that has got us in a mess are Sandro, Gbamin, Klaassen, Iwobi, Allli, Patterson. Crap players that cost a lot of money but can barely get a game.

….not convinced with Mykolenko but I can’t help but like the lad.

I really hope it turns out for us and him but his defending is poor. It’s not as if he was a cheap purchase, I certainly wouldn’t have advised paying that much for him.

If we go with Mykolenko and Patterson as the full backs next year do you see Godfrey as a starter with Branthwaite pushing for a starting spot?

If so, what type of centre back would you like to see Thelwell/Lampard bring in to play alongside Godfrey?

I think we'll need to have height and athleticism but also a ball player...not easy to find.

A bit early!

Also, Tosun was right there to be used!

Well they can't even get a game for the crappest side in living memory. Tosun is another example of a waste. At the right price, I think Zaha would be an upgrade and one of the first names on the team sheet.
