Everton Summer Transfer Thread - 2022

Danny Blind was a much better player than his lad. Played in the great dutch side from the 80s captained the great team of the mid 90s.
That's usually how that one works. For whatever reason, legends of a game rarely seem to raise legends of the same game. Cases like the Mannings in American football are incredibly rare.

If it were just genetics, surely Agassi and Graf's kid would have won multiple calendar-year Grand Slams by now.

For me, we need to blood Patterson and Mykolenko ASAP.

It all good planning for next season but all honesty we need to win games fast and plan next.

Doucoure coming back is huge for us.

Im not too concerned about the full back positions...weve got Mykolenko/Nkounkou and Patterson/Coleman all on the books for next season.

I dont 'mind' that while we look at the major weaknesses.

These are of course centre back: Branthwaite/Godfrey to stay while Mina, Holgate, Keane to leave. One top player to join and one u21 to develop.

Centre midfield where only Doucoure and perhaps Onyango should be kept on...meaning we really need a DM and a CM.

There has to be minutes given to the new full backs (as you said) as well as Onyango and Branthwaite to make sure they get used to the pace of the premier league and are ready for a strong preseason.

Yeah Luiz and Kamara, what players.
Not sure about Donnie at 6
Fantasy midfield : McKennie Luiz VDB, nothing much will get through them and Richarlison, Grey DCL would be bagging 60 between them.

Whatever they end up spending they reall need to spend the majority on midfield, nothing changes until they do.
You can get lucky and get wingers lie Gray, but not midfielders.

For me, the first targets would be two of Bissouma, Gravenberch, Gallagher and Kamara if VDB cements the DM role and we sign him. The midfield would be complete then...although i think we would only have enough funds for two players total with numerous outgoings.

I think Lampard will go for some leaders in the summer with his comments after the Saints game. Especially a commanding CB & CM. The spine of the team has been dreadful for years.

I see us getting rid of some dross in the summer and plenty of contracts run down anyway. Big rebuild again.

I’m not quite sure losing both Richy and DCL and using that money to rebuild would really be that bad tbh.

What is a 'leader' these days? I dont see (m)any real leaders in the top teams any more.

Perhaps a leader is someone who 'leads' by example or has top quality like a Beckham rather than a Keane?

That Gravenberch looks f'in brilliant btw

Indeed he does. Id say Antony is the best player at Ajax now and the two of them could go on to be world class level.

Very hard to bring them to Everton looking at the league table but we have a chance with Lampard.

Remember Essien was in talks with us for a moved from Bastia....until he chose to stay in France and play under Le Guen because he though he would improve him.

I agree I think the mould has changed now, no more Keanes, Terrys, Lampards or Gerrards about anymore but we need a mentality shift asap. That’s what I think he will look for, especially in the middle and Cb positions. Our players are too weak mentally. I honestly think some of them look at a win or a loss in the same way, no pride amongst most of the team.

Rebuilding the midfield can be a minefield of bad decisions and wasted money. There is no better case than Everton for that.

We had Gana which means you had to have very specific types of mids to make the whole midfield effective for the rest. Same would be for Kamara. If you throw a 10 into that midfield - which is what they tried to do with Siguurdsson, Klassen, Rooney, Vlasic - you'd then need either a world class DM/CM who is great at distributing the ball and switching play, holding onto the ball under pressure in tights space and a significant presence in defence and in the boxes. We had Scneiderlin, then Gomes.
That's a lot of wasted money and a lot of [Poor language removed] football.
If you don't go the 10 route you need two no.8s each side, both of which need to be able to drop and distribute at different times. Both needs to be good dribblers, good passers to link play and possess the vision to able to do that. So if we just get Kamara (and don't get Donnie) we're back to where we were with all that money spent and a lot more money needed to make the Kamara transfer worth the trouble.
Sure we've now got Ali to go the 10 route, but even with a world class DM/CM, Ali is the rock we might perish on.
Further this type of midfield formation is being undone more regularly by opposition - its not solid enough to take on the best where your really relying on 2 CMs to be the main defenders for the side as well as being the ones to get the whole side attacking; how do you play through the pressure and come out with a platform to attack from when its too easy these day for sides too take those 2 out of the game - Southampton being a case in point.

For me a much wiser use of money is to find two or three 8s with the prerequisite that they are good midfield defenders.
You can be more specific from there. One type of 8 is Bissouma, McKennie.
The other type is more the Dutch 8 like VDB who is moving all over the field linking, or off the ball covering the lines and space. A player who would not be out of place filling in the backline as moving into AM.
One more of a dribbler, one more of a linker, but both good defenders.

The two 8s open up the option to play a player like Douglas Luiz in the middle and switch to a player like Ali when a tactical switch is needed. Ie the two 8s are able to quickly fill the roles central midfield defense with Ali on.
Luiz type players would be huge in helping fix the weak presence in the boxes and he's superb with his passing range at getting counters going and relieving pressure.

The spenders need to stop seeing who can they get in midfield and have some sort of a plan.

Gravenbach is a tricky one. Again he's the sort of player that determines who the other midfielders will be.
He'd be better going to Italy and working on his defensive side to become the great all round player he could be.
At Everton a player like Gravenbach could be a disaster for both parties. Look at the problems Pogba has bought to United and multiply.

Well, if it was me Id have gone with a deep playmaker at 6 and two 8s. However we signed Dele.

So, if the idea is to have him as the 10 we'll need a ball player as one of the central midfielders and a box to box player alongside them.

I dont see the similarities between Kamara/Gana or Gravenberch/Pogba.

Kamara isnt going charging around the pitch like a headless chicken and is positionally disciplined as a specialist DM. Gravenberch can play DM, CM or AM and, like with VDB can go through the gears back/forth...

One thing also to keep in mind is that with Rice West Ham have gone from a mid table side to a good side...that one central player makes all the difference to us.
