He’s playing at the top end of the prem was my point, for a club that have just missed out on the champions league 2yrs running and won a trophy.

I wish we had bought him for 3:5 mil 3 years ago instead of the 25/30 spent on Keane & Mina
True this.
I remember the uproar on here when we were linked to him and all the usual “not good enough” from jarg experts.
Same was said about Jiminez when linked with him too.
TBF though, they’d have probably both been absolutely turd if they had signed for Everton instead.

I really don’t understand the moans about not being able to sell. Everyone freely admits our players who we’d like to sell are useless, so why would other clubs want to buy? You can’t blame brands for not being able to shift the deadwood when they are that bad.

You can when he bought most of them.

Exactly, Macca is dead on here...

Surely Brands can sell the players he wasted so much money on.

Or is he incapable of even that?

Red Echo says we are skint yet we try sign Koula Koula.

Dumfries and Koulibaly - POWER

Signing a 'past his prime' Koulibaly at a premium rate would be peak Moshiri-era Everton

On the face of it Dumfries, Godfrey and Koulibaly add athleticism and power.

However, they dont add huge amounts of mid-long term benefit and for say £50mil combined are we going to be thrilled with them in 2 seasons time?

I think not.

Looking at "rumours" I see centre back is a position we are looking at. Not that I believe them all.

I think Mina and Keane could definitely be sold but ultimately they are still the strongest pairing.

Godfrey is believed to be "too young" to play centre back which I think is short of the mark and he has everything you want in a centre back but perhaps they need more of an experienced head next to him.

Our other options are Holgate and Branthwaite are not first choice but could still play some part in the squad.

Rumour-wise, the big three we have been linked to are: Koulibaly, Lenglet and Zouma.

For me, Zouma and Lenglet make more sense than Koulibaly especially Napoli are looking for more than £30m.

I would have hoped Everton would have went for Botman at Lille - young, tall, strong, left footed and huge potential and Lille have huge financial issues so £30m could spring him.

Kounde and Bastoni are fantastic but Tapsoba, Badiashile and White are attainable.

For me, Botman may be caught like Keane for pace on the turn...

Id happily sell Keane (oaf) and Mina (injuries/contract) and bring in one of the names i mentioned above...

Go with them and Holgate, Branthwaite.

Freshen things up and bank some cash + save wages.

What’s no prem
Experience have to do with it. He’s been one of the best CB’s In the world. And every player doesn’t need to have a sell on value.

Thiago is 36 and still playing, Ramos is 35 and just gone to PSG. Johnny Evans is 34. VVD has just turned 30.

Give him a 4yr deal and when that 4 seasons is up he will be 33. You’re sounding like he’s on his last legs

Koulibaly's performance seems to have deteriorated in the past 2 seasons.

It could be due to him being a really powerful player or just someone who has hit their peak -- could also be management change or needing a new challenge of course.

The concern for me would be that we sign someone going downhill to then play in a faster more powerful league.

Why not go for Tapsoba or similar and then coach them with Godfrey to be a long term pairing?

Overpay for older players that want a pay day and retirement spot and suffer more.

I love our club, but Koulibali should have higher ambitions
Koulibaly ambitions wasn’t part of the discussion. I’d rather we bought world class than someone who still has potential at 26 nearly 27.

Mad that Zouma is only 3 years younger.

Whether you think spending 55mil on Zaha was a good choice 2 summers ago, but look who the cheaper back up plan was. Iwobi

There’s a big difference, from having a poor season, to going downhill. The guy has just turned 30. He’s not 36

To be honest I'm all for giving our youth prospects a chance and my way of thinking was Coleman is our captain so will be playing quite regularly, Kenny had a fairly successful run with Celtic last season, them two alternating with someone younger proving depth such as Markelo. I thought would see us through.

However if we can add someone better, then why not.
If ever proof was required that this guy has never seen Everton play a match this ^^^ is it.

I didnt say a poor season...i said performances over the past 2 seasons seem to have deteriorated.

So he may have peaked 2 seasons ago and now be on a sliding slope. No idea, but something to keep in mind.

On his past 2 years hes not worth £35mil+ when theres many young CBs around who can become top class. £35mil or below hes probably worth it but his wages will be enormous as well i imagine.

I'm not sure how you make your first statement as it was absolutely part of why I said what I said, but whatever. Not really hear to argue.

I understand your point, and agree on Iwobi though I think comparing Zouma to Iwobi is harsh on Zouma. I'm not saying either of the two would by my first choice. Though I actually like Zouma, I'm sure that puts me in the minority, but i'm okay with that.

My larger point is that paying 50m for Koulibaly is not, in my opinion, good business.

While I do agree with you we do need to look at players younger who can develop with us into the top player Koulibaly is.

Do we not have enough young players in defence, that seem to suffer with lack of experience and/or mistakes that have cost us ?

Koulibaly at 30 would become our oldest centre back, by some distance really. Its na are we do need leadership and experience.
