The guy who has never played well in a top flight league is a safer bet than the guy who has?

And the way to respond is "yes it doesn't mattered that they played together before just like it doesn't matter that James has played with Lucas Vazquez before." Because it doesn't. Sign the player based on that individual player.

Thats the galactico approach which Madrid failed with.

You sign players to fit into the overall strategy and to have partnerships of players across the team who complement one another.

The galactico approach failed? That's a new one.

Regardless you can develop partnerships at the club. They don't have to exist beforehand. Pienaar and Baines didn't play with each other before Everton.

Yeah, all those City players and their previous partnerships show it works.

Wait a God damn minute.

When Florentino Perez launched the galacticos: Figo, Beckham, Zidane, Ronaldo, Robinho, Ramos and Owen for about €280mil.

Adding to players like Makelel, Casillas, Morientes, Raul, Hierro, McManaman, Carlos and Guto.

1 Champions league
3 La Liga Titles
2 Supercopas
1 Intercontinental Cup

Thats over 7 years from 2000-2007.

For that amount of money in fees and wages they failed.

Not sure where your Pienaar/Baines axis has come from. It was a great combination for Everton at the time -- Baines was bought from Wigan and Pienaar had massively flopped in Dortmund.

You wouldnt have signed Baines because he played for Wigan and likely wouldnt touch Pienaar either as his 'stats' were awful.

Or are you saying Spurs (for example) should have signed Baines as well when they took Pienaar as a partnership?

Like Vasquez/James...or Godfrey/Aarons.

Most of this stuff is forged in training and its of a clear benefit for players to train together to create understandings on the pitch.

You can see Van Nistelrooy explain that he tried to nurture this with all the attack minded players such as Ronaldo and even Bellerin / Kleberson and Forlan. He'd speak with them about the runs he would make etc.

It's kind of hard to say who I would and wouldn't have signed 15 years ago when I was in grade school and didn't know Everton existed tbh.

The point was Baines and Pienaar didn't play together before and were an awesome partnership with one of the best understandings I've seen. We don't have to go looking for players with a history to find that. I don't think it is that hard to follow.

Aarons is either good enough or he isn't. His "history" with Godfrey genuinely doesn't matter at all.

Im pretty confident that Ancelotti and/or Brands would ask existing squad members about key targets character and ability if they played together before.

It is a long project.

Young players can get better too. That's part of what we need to start doing more often. DCL's need to be a regular thing.
Yes I get that and that was probably the plan hiring brands. But the chance to appoint ancelotti has moved the goal posts for a few years. So it’s probably a mix of the two, like I’ve

We bought Allan, James and Doucoure last summer. How much more proof do you need
