Agreed. If he wants to retire this summer fine. Otherwise he retires somewhere else.We need to stop being so sentimental. He's crap now and is a year of wages we don't need to spend.

Who'd buy him though? Not many teams are going to be matching his wages here, that's for sure.We need to stop being so sentimental. He's crap now and is a year of wages we don't need to spend.
Fair enough. For me it's not just about whether they're better than what we've got, there are plenty of other factors i'd take into account too. As I said, i'm not saying he'd be a bad signing, I have no idea, I just don't think there's any need to be dismissive of people questioning it. There are very good reasons to question it, it's not crazy to think it might not be a wise use of resources.

He is not costing a transfer fee, yes high ish wages, but to be able to bring a player ina of this level for no fee is good business.
Now, had we been paying £25 million, and offering a 5 year deal....then its an issue.....and thats the issue we have put ourselves in before.
But just like the James deal, I would not be surprised if this was a 2+1 year deal.
Seems a no brainer to me tbh.
Let his deal run out in 2022 then.Who'd buy him though? Not many teams are going to be matching his wages here, that's for sure.
Free transfers aren't free. Signing on fees can be large.
I understand your logic, i'm not arguing with you. I've said before, i'm not saying he wouldn't be a good signing, i'm saying I can see why other people might be apprehensive. There are plenty of deals in recent years that people have told me are no brainers. Not many of them have worked out quite as well as people seemed to think they would. He is not costing a transfer fee, yes high ish wages, but to be able to bring a player ina of this level for no fee is good business.

They still cost much much less a transfer fee....and they also get signing of fee's when they are not "free".
Well I definitely wouldn't be giving him a new contract! I'm just saying I can't imagine it being very easy to get rid of him even if we wanted to. We'd surely want a fee (like it or not he's still in the squad every week and club captain) and he's on something like £70k a week. I just don't see there being too many takers at that cost.Let his deal run out in 2022 then.
Lower but still not "free". It'll still be in the several millions for this guy + high wages that won't be of any use in a year or two.
