Distan was signed at similar age, for what was a big fee for us at the time. He did pretty well, didn he? I think Williams and Jags will be a pretty good partnership.

32 or not, £10M for a defender that can actually defend in today's market is a steal. Even if we get two good years out of him that transfer fee is £5M a year, some clubs pay that to loan players.

I suppose so, £10mill these days is akin to paying £5mill for Distin years ago.

I actually really rate him and would be delighted to see him sign - hope there is some truth in it.

May be some truth in it after all. Guidolin was asked about Williams after the game and said

"Ashley is very important to us and I don't know what the situation is."

Surely if there was nothing happening he would say outright.

As it stands a massive improvement over Stones in our defence if it happens, fact, Stones is a work in progress that may well become a world class centre back, but Williams will improve our defence in the short term, and he's a leader of men to boot.

That price is surprising, why would they accept that, they don't need the money now ?
