I think this summer might end up being a learning curve for the club.
We have money and I do believe that on numerous occasions we have outbid other established clubs for big names. I believe it when it is reported that we have bid more than Chelsea for Koulibaly and Juventus for Witsel . So I don't think the current predicament (lack of transfers) is because of us being "tight".
In my opinion it's partly because, whilst we have more money that we have ever had, so does everyone else and the last two seasons we have been turd.
In Stones and Lukaku we have two young highly coveted players. Unfortunately, players of their ilk are in demand by clubs that have achieved things over the past few years. I am sure the club want more players of the quality of Stones and Lukaku but like I said, it's very hard to attract them.
My worry is doing a Liverpool. If you can't replace them, don't sell them. In 2014 Liverpool nearly won the league because they had arguably one of the best strikers on the plant up front. They sold him and could bring no one in of his quality. If there was anyone better than Suarez in 2014, Barcelona would have signed them. If there was anyone better than Stones, City would be after them now.
Before the club is able to beat Chelsea in a battle for Koulibaly, we probably need to start proving things on the pitch and that is going to take time. We also need to operate with intelligence in the transfer market, rather than with just a massive ego. Last September City were being lorded for their fantastic summer of spending. In the end, they struggled to finish fourth.
Whilst "doing a Leicester", is easier said than done, they show valuable lessons in building a team and seeing through the hype of over rated egos.
This isn't 2008, when city were bought and could blow nearly everyone else out of the water in the transfer window. Being loaded isn't the only guarantee for success, you need loads of brain cells to go with it.
