i have never watched him enough to form a in depth opinion of him sadly so all i can base hart on is that he is better than what we have.

Perhaps a little madess every now and again is not really a bad thing? And with this new formation and signings, he could well have 5 defenders in front of him rather than otamendi/di michelis / mangala who struggled at city?
Ya true to.he might have found a good level with us for where we are at at the minute but not good enough for the top top level imo.

Last week was a glimpse of life without Rom attacking wise and it was great to watch. I wouldn't even pick Rom tomorrow based on what we seen last week.

you wouldn't pick our 25 goals striker after we played without a striker, scored a flukey goal and didn't win mate?

I think I know the way he'll usually want to set up. But whatever system is adhered to you need people who can score goals. So just having one in at the moment does not serve us well. If Lukaku got injured what happens then?

Elsewhere: I really think it's up to Koeman to come in and try to adapt some players before throwing cash at positions we already have covered. I just dont buy 'the pressing specialist". If ANY player cant get that side of the game into their repertoire then they're not fit to call themselves professional. Pressing is not an acquired talent, it's discipline that should easily be tapped into.
Dave.
I am not sure it is that easy for any player to adapt their game that easily. If it was then surely we could get Niasse , McGeady, Garbutt and others to adapt and fill the gaps we need filled.

I don't particularly agree on Gueye or Hart mate but FWIW think you're right about the midfielder.

For me, Barry will do the job fine if we're playing a counter-attacking system. As long as he's managed right in his game time he'll be brilliant for us this year IMO.

However, I personally still think we need a player who can dominate a game from deep - especially against teams that we should be beating comfortably on paper.

That being said, if we sign Ghezzal, then it appears Koeman (who has publicly stated he wants Ross to take more responsibility) may well choose to move Ross deeper - either in a 2 or as part of a 4-1-4-1/4-3-3.

He won't keep the same formation for a lot of games and I think that will benefit us. So it may well be that signing another player who can fill a role up top means that Barkley can take on that role of a box-to-box player.

Hope not. Was sick to death of the same old 4-2-3-1 no matter who we played. Want to see the pressing game after the rubbish of the last two seasons. Also shows a proper tactical manager who is adaptable to the opposition, including in game changes when necessary.

he changed formations regularly during his times at all previous clubs.

only usually sticks with one for more than a few games if the side is on a good run - e.g. used 3-4-3 for about 7 league games straight last season and S'ton went unbeaten, same with the end of the season using 4-2-3-1.

Mate, for me the solution is already here and hiding in plain sight: Ross Barkley.

I wonder whether managers see the same as the rest of us. I think he's utterly wasted anywhere else than CM. He's played there on occasion under Martinez and it was a success. The Derby where he dropped back after a reshuffle after Baines limped off - he was unstoppable; the home game versus QPR before Christmas the following season. He has to be put there or dont play him at all, imo.

(Dave & NSNO) Welcome negativity, you have been missed.:coffee:
It's not negativity mate. I'm all for Koeman and I've said a lot that William's signature is the best signing of the window so far in the PL for me.

But it is what it is.

I notice Koeman has stated today that he's finding it hard landing primary targets because they dont necessarily buy into 'the project' he's selling. That's noticeable in the types he's having to bring in right now. Players who'll fit into a wage structure wont necessarily be the missing links we require unfortunately.

As I said in the post you quoted mate, I think Koeman might think the same way (and I do too in fairness).

I was listening to Radio City Talk on the drive home from work last night, and Sharp (and Aldo) summed Lukaku up perfectly for me.

For all the criticisms you can make about Lukaku be that with regards to his abilities, performances or attitude; his goal record speaks for itself.

Forgetting his sulk and naive comments at the end of last season, without his vital and pretty copious amounts of goals we'd have been relegated.

He's not a perfect professional by and stretch of the imagination and he could improve in areas, yet what he does guarantee you is goals.

And in the end that's his primary role! Alas, anyone thinking we could easily replace those goals needs to give their head a serious wobble.

What we need to do is nurture him, support him, rekindle his relationship with the club and importantly bring in some genuine competition.

Throwing our toys out the cot because he's not the true blue people desire is cringe worthy; thinking objectively he's the best we can expect.
