Can see a bit of your point but these clubs have all bought heavily in the past in this window so I don't get the 'there's no value in January' argument, United bought Evra and Vidic in the same January window.

Liverpool and Chelsea have wasted a lot of money recently. It does not surprise me to see them keeping money in their pocket especially with Chelsea's league campaign over and an interim coach in. City are almost top of the league, have a huge squad which they bolstered massively in summer and have a new manager coming in. Buying would be nonsensical for them. Spurs does surprise me I'll be honest, but if Berahino had been below 20 mill they would have pounced according to most reports.

We didn't spend much in summer and now have failed to address weak areas of the squad in this one. The problems Martinez discussed at the end of last season, goal keeper, centreback, creative playmaker, wide player, backup striker, only two of these have been addressed, and they were arguably the less important ones. We were crying out for a good keeper and a creative central midfielder last summer and we'll be doing the same this summer.

Evra and Vidic were bought 10 years ago mate...

It's not all about spend. It's what you spend it on.

We've got a creative midfielder in Barkley. We've got plenty of options for behind him.

January is not the time to have a major squad over-haul unless you're desperately trying to avoid relegation.

Jordan Rhodes - a player whose highest level has been mid-table in the championship, was bought by another Championship club for £11million - nearly 3 x what Deulofeu cost us in the summer...

It's all about value. We've bought a player for big money that Martinez obviously feels is worth it, and by the looks of it will fill two gaps in our squad. I'd call that decent business on the face of things.

We've gone down a different route as it's obvious that we have more success when somebody who is naturally a forward plays out left as it stops Rom getting so isolated. That's why the need for a playmaker isn't as vital now.

Goalkeeper was never discussed by Martinez. He (unfortunately) has faith in Howard. But we wouldn't have got a decent keeper this window. The answer should be to play Joel for now.

TBF creativity hasn't been a problem this season. How many assists have Barkley and Deulofeu got between them?

Both have delivered on the play making score so maybe that had become less of an issue.

It's about balance in the side though. Playing two defensive midfielders means Martinez has to play Deulofeu and a striker on the other wing to get the best out of Lukaku, it also means the full backs have to go forward and Stones has to step out of defence and make some of the play. A midfielder like Arteta was who can dictate from the middle might allow us to commit less men forward as our creativity in terms of releasing our forward players would be far greater.

I invite you to forward your suggestions good sir...?

Why should i put forward suggestions? Ive done it plenty of times anyway, but still.

The two you mentioned are barely an improvment on what we've got. Id rather make Joel our number one than sign Vorm and Fabianski. Same goes to the shouts of Tom Heaton that ive seen, utter guff.

I suggest you watch more of him then.

Agree to disagree, I don't need to bring out a list of good recent January signings. Liverpool's best three players from their 13/14 season were all Jan signings. It is about what you spend your money on you're right but you're saying we don't need a playmaker because we put a striker on the wing and we don't need a keeper until the summer. We are 12th, we do need those players, the manager and board have chosen not to get them, there is a crucial difference. Unless we string some wins together in the next few games our league season is over. We're therefore left with the unlikely prospect of the FA cup. If some people are happy wasting another season that's fine. We'll see how Lukaku Stones Barkley et al react to another midtable campaign come the summer.

How do you know @Saint Domingo that Martinez chose not to sign a playmaker and Keeper in this window? None of us knows for sure about our transfer business apart from the signings we did make. It was documented that we may or may not have made another attempt at Yarmolenko and we may have been scouting keepers but could have been put off by values considering that position is one you don't really want to be taking costly risks on

Creativity has in no way been our issue this season. We look most nullified up top when Rom is isolated. When Kone plays, for all of his faults, he gets good support up to Rom and that is what Niasse will offer and more. It's a different system and it works better for us.

I agree we need another keeper. My argument is it was never going to happen in this window so why expect that it would? And, as I've said, any keeper that would be a real improvement would not be available in the middle of the season.

Our squad is big, we've got a lot of depth. Our defensive players are fine, it's how we defend as a team and a unit that's the problem - though I stand by my point that if Robles gets a run of games I reckon they'd look a lot better.

True, I forgot to mention that in my reply to @Saint Domingo .

We made a definite move for Yarmolenko earlier in this window, at the £22mil we had been quoted last summer (originally then it was around £18mil by all accounts, before Kyiv moved the goalposts late in the window).

We went back in this window at £22mil, as reported, but Kyiv want to keep him as they are still in the CL, so put the price up to above £25mil, which also put off Arsenal and Dortmund.

Noone seems to have asked the question.

Where does this leave mirallas? Not first choice on the left due to naisse, back up is kone. Not first choice or back up on the right del/lennon.

So yeah, another turn in Mirallas treatment at everton?

Probably exactly where he is mate - Martinez wants non of Miralles no matter how much of a "phenomenal character" he has.
