Goalkeeper definitely - who and of what quality depends on Joel's form.

Right back, for me, should preferably be a younger, quality player to be adequate back up.

We're fine for central midfield with the caveat we go for a playmaker/advanced midfielder to play in any of the three positions behind the striker - primarily wide left.

That would allow Barkley to move deeper should a situation arise that he needs to do so.

Buying in another CM is pointless considering we've got him, Besic, Barry, McCarthy and Cleverley who play/can play in the centre.

barry will need replacing soon, imo we need a dominant box to box midfielder...besic maybe that man, we need someone to challenge mcarthy and barry

Both Barry and McCarthy make runs forward while the other one sits deep. We don't play with one of them rigidly sitting and the other one doing the legwork.

McCarthy is at his best going forward when he bursts forward making a third-man run, and he's at his best defensively when nipping into challenges, with Barry sweeping up and then kick-starting our attacks.

If we want a playmaker for that 'CM' position as you put it, then we already have one in the form of Barkley who could develop into that player with ease, which would mean buying a player who can play anywhere in the three behind the forward to allow Barkley to drop deep.

However, I also think Besic is going to go on to become that player in terms of a deep-lying playmaker. He often does that for Bosnia.

Good point here regarding Barkley. I never quite understood why last summer RM kept talking about bringing in a "number 10". Barkley is already playing that role and you are right about how he could develop but at present he is doing well in behind the forward. I am not convinced he has the defensive element to his game yet to regularly play any deeper but that will come with more game time.

No signs of that at all but as you say, we have Besic tailor-made for that role. You can't just replace a player like Barry, as it's his experience and ability to read the game that make him such a good player.

We do need a playmaker still mate, of genuine quality that would help us pick the lock. However, it will be somebody to play the role that Pienaar has for so long, not necessarily as a traditional 'no.10'.

Agree on Barks, but in certain situations against teams that sit back (e.g. at Goodison) his defending isn't really an issue as long as he's got a player with genuine pace and power to sweep up next to him.

Well it clearly does...

Robles has done very well since coming in and if he carries on like this he deserves his shot at no.1. I'd rather not spend £30mil on a new keeper and use that towards a player whose going to come in and help us overcome teams whose main objective is to sit back and frustrate us (which is what those types of players cost) if we already have a good keeper who is only going to improve in between the sticks.

Of course we need to sign a good keeper, either as back up or as first choice - which depends on how Joel does.

Im actually suffering from illness since the weekend so wont go to deep here.....

Barry is basically a central "pivot", mirroring the Busquets position fo Barca. He's in a unique position there and of the current squad i think only Besic could have the various abilities to perform that role.

We dont know about Besic positional ability but in every interview he talks about "learning". We either need to use Besic in that role OR find another player who can be the "new Barry" or better still, the "new Busquets".

So, lets look beyond Barry --who would compete with Besic for the position? Right now no-one.

So for me lets say we went out and signed a single player for central midfield who "could" develop into this player. You have Tielemans in belgium who is still very young and enormous potential yet is available for the right price....then Neves as Porto who is also very young but now club captain which shows not only leadership but discipline.

Both of these players can be signed to play CM or even DM and it will mean game time for them as part of a young team and squad. If signed in the summer we could have Barry mentor them for a season (and maybe beyond as a coach) to become the new "Pivot".

Its such a specialist position, the other optioj which i would be amazed if we pulled off would be Saul Niguez from Atletico. He for me is the closest to Busquests in Spain BUT i should temper all this by saying ive not watched all of these guys 50+ times each and only dare i say 5-10 times for the kids and Jiguez maybe 15-20 times i took an interest.

If Barry goes we will probably just change our style like martinez has commented before and others have posted quotes on the topic.....but now with tv and moshiri we could replace him and those Tielemans links in Jan may not be so far fetched as the Niguez links for several years

Id have agreed with you up until recently actually but my opinion on this has changed due to personal experience in work and life.

What we need to do is have the number 1 team in the league. To get to this point we need to have the best squad in the league.

Is Robles "potentially" going to be the best in the league ? I have no idea as hes 25 and only just come through BUT if you were offered Neuer you would take him.

I think we should sign the best YOUNG keeper we can, fo me thats a Sergio Rico,Jack Butland or a Bernd Leno level keeper 22/23 years of age. Look at the teams with poor keepers (like us with howard) and see the difference. Also if Joel got injured and we have signed a backup worse than him its not ideal.

We need a top goalie as priority and for me £30mil for Butland or a bit less on the other two is points in the bag and money well spent. Let Joel work with them and improve himself.
