Howard was poor. Made one very good save from Ramires early doors but flapped and nearly presented Eto'o with an open goal. He really really could do with replacing.
Step up Joel

he was poor yesterday and i was calling for a new first choice about 5 months ago, but he's been on good form. can't call for his head because of his first poor outing of the season.

1) According to Mourinho they bossed us but according to Statzone we had 5 shots on target compared to their 4.

2) I'm slightly surprised that Martinez is going for Moyes-esque team selections eg. 4-2-3-1, Naismith in for Pienaar. I thought he might have tried something a bit more unusual.

3) Three clean sheets in four league games is a pleasant surprise.

4) Considering that we lost away at Norwich and at home to Chelsea last year, Roberto is currently 2 points up on Davey's comparable record (West Brom at home included).

5) It's good to see that we haven't lost the ability to defend manfully or get in the face of the opposition.

6) I thought Barry might be as lumbering as Neville but his positioning was so good that he didn't have to make up too much ground and he was very comfortable on the ball.

7) Naismith has definitely got goals in him and I hope that both Pienaar and Mirallas raise their game to keep him out of the side.

Mine

Howard 5 He got lucky cos Barry is boss, would have been 3 but he made a few decent stops
Coleman 7 Did enough, couldnt push on as much as im sure he would have liked
Baines 10 Hes getting a 10 every game, NEA, a true hero
Jagielka 8 I love him
Distin 8 See above
Osman 6 Meh
Barry 9 Utterly superb
Barkley 8 Dub fade
Mirallas 8 Did well when pushed upfront, held it up well and probed all game
Jelavic 6 For his "assist" alone
Naismith 9 Well done lid

You just know that Naismith has a ghost account on GOT, and reading the bit in bold has made him the happiest he's ever been in his life.

May as well...

Howard 5 - Did okay despite his suicide pass, Barry though.
Coleman 7 - Couldn't get forward but proved he's just as good defensively
Baines 7 - Same reasons as Coleman, made up he got a boss reception. Would have been perfect if his freekick went in.
Jags 8 - His reading of many of the Chelsea passes was excellent.
Distin 8 - Got his gigantic back in the way of Chelsea's superstars and put some vital challenges in.
Osman 6 - Started shaky, played a few suicide passes but grew into the game. Looked tricky in the final third.
BARRY 10 - What is there to say? Brilliant debut.
Barkley 7 - Although his decision making was frustrating, he put the Chelsea defence under pressure whenever he was on the ball and was key to us breaking.
Mirallas 7 - Looked a passenger at times, but really effective on the break and supported Baines well. Hold up play up top was good as well.
Naismith 9 - Won countless knock downs for us, kept working away, goal topped off his performance. Thoroughly deserved the standing ovation he got.
Jela 6 - Just wasn't his game, couldn't retain the ball and was getting nothing off the ref. But kept working and got that vital assist.

A few observations:

1) Thrilled for Steven Naismith. Played hard (and well) all match and was rewarded for his tenacity.

2) Step forward Gareth Barry. Keep playing like that and you just may force your way back into the England squad.

3) Even though he had a howler, Tim Howard had a very strong match.

4) Roberto Martinez. Right game plan, right subs, right result.

5) No goal but Jelavic got the assist on the winner. Hopefully that will boost his confidence a bit.

6) Good by Barkley but he's got to learn when to dish the ball. Held it or turned into trouble one too many times for my liking. He'll get that worked out with experience.

From my home in Auckland, NZ, I texted my younger brother the message "YESSS!!!!" at the conclusion of the game. He was at Nou Camp watching Barcelona play...he was made up to hear the result. Last season, we both, quite coincidentally spoke of this fellow Roberto Martinez and how impressed we were by his demeanour, deportment and comportment. And then SAF retires and it was obvious Moyes was going to his job and, to me and my bro, obvious that RM was the necessary replacement. The stars were in alignment and thus it all turned out as it has.
Listen fellow Evertonians, we are on the verge of a whole new era of success. We have a a manager who will one day be seen in the same light as the world's GREAT managers of present and yesteryear.
For EFC, it is vital that home nurtured talent like Barkley stay with us. This is the avenue by which the stranglehold on titles by the wealthied can be broken.
I love our Football Club. We are a special outfit...COYB

So happy for Naisy still
Got shivers when he was subbed off and Goodison roared their appreciation of his performance-- he's had such a tough time, and while this doesn't mean he's necessarily turned a corner, this can only be good for him and the team.
Martinez's words about him were also beautiful
