....beating Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester without our regular full-backs and arguably our most creative players in Digne and Rodriguez suggests there is a bit of depth in the squad as does our position in the league.

It was a poor performance last night against a side who are particularly potent away from home. Maguire has twice this season played as well as anybody in nullifying DCL and for once we carried no threat in the final third. I’d give United lots of credit.

Whilst Sigurdsson is getting many plaudits for his display, his delivery from crosses into the box was ordinary as was his header from our only realistic chance. Being busy isn’t the same as being effective. We were still very much in the game with 15mins to go and I wonder if Ancelotti could’ve been braver with his substitutions and gone for it.
Don’t get me wrong mate, the squad is going in the right direction for sure, I’m very happy with the season overall in particular how we have dug in the last few games. I was meaning more it was a gentle reminder to not get too carried away as despite the progress and improvements in certain areas there’s a lot left to be done.

Morning. We deserved to get hammered last night, was very poor
But, surely Carlo said we were very good? There is a mismatch there somewhere. The manager's big mistake was he did not apologise publicly for an abject performance and he and his team would do their utmost to get back to league form. Witnessing that garbage last night and then hearing the manager say what he said was insulting to Evertonians. His English is well good enough to say "We were awful. Sorry."

I think I understand the point.- Get rid of dead wood and diligently replace I’m assuming he means.
It is really evident the gulf in quality between our better players and lesser players..
We are doing as well as I’d have hoped at this stage. A couple of decent ins and obvious outs in January would be great!!!
Yes that’s right, but is no easy quick task. And We have improved to this point so far.

I think we did alright considering everything was against us.

Utd made 9 changes from their game on weekend and were still able to field a team of their best players and have top class players on the bench. If we had done the same we would be playing a team of youngsters and deadwood.

This game really showed our lack of depth as everyone on the pitch looked knackered and explains why we didn't press for the first 30 mins as everyone was to scared to tire themselves out.
For me we really need to sign a fast and aggressive winger that matches richy intensity to either play on the opposite side to him or be able to swap with him. We always miss his intensity when he is not on the pitch and it really shows.

The refereeing was absolutely terrible so many decisions going against us, particularly cavanis choke, and brunos push on richy. Both incidents should have had a look in. I think they should have had 10 men after cavanis grab on yerry. Also im sure their were multiple free kicks incidents we should have had go our way which we didn't.

This game really would have been the ideal match for James as I think his creativity and vision would have helped us unlock utds defence, instead we looked blunt as anything combined with our tiredness.

And yeah gomes was absolutely terrible! Awful marking, no pressing, no bite and then absolutely hopeless when in possession. Not making any runs, wayward passing.
I think if we had started that game with Allan, Digne, and James we would have had a different story.
This tactic of being compact and organised at the back has worked so far but now with our fitness levels dropping it really exposed our lack of creative players on the pitch and Allan's spoiling on the break.

I am not gutted despite the desire to get silverware, I just see this as a game where the odds were truly stacked against us.

What he said was "no regrets" because "the team performed", and he stressed the defensive performance after the first 20 minutes.

That's a long way from saying that the performance was up to snuff. I read that as saying the team played hard, which is true enough, but that he's damning the team (especially offensively) with faint praise.

They were just better than us. We tried. It wasn't a lack of courage. In fact if we really didn't care we'd have gotten smoked the way we played. Effort alone kept it within reason.
They were much better than us last night and generally are, but we did hang in. Sometimes you’ve just got to accept it. We’ve not had our first 11 available for weeks. We’re moving in the right direction. But we’re a long way off being able to bring the likes of Rashford and Martial off the bench to help win us a game.

Honestly, if we had at least 1 ref decision going our way - mostly the choke on yerry, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Yeah, we weren't dazzling, but we did decently enough for the game to at least get to pens. Unfortunately, that sandwiching of Richarlison by Fernandes ruined even that chance for us as we played with 10v11 for the rest of the game.

And aside from that, aside from this Everton game, I've no idea what it takes for refs to card a united player. Fernandes should've missed at 3-4 games for red cards this season alone. But what can you do, I've said it right after the game vs L'pool - we're not getting any decision in our favor anymore this season. Seems that it takes a flat out murder to give a red card to someone we're playing against.

edit: and also, our team is starting to look like Carlo's just flogging the dead horse given that we've no rotation options whatsoever.

hope for hte best on saturday I guess.

I couldn't watch the game live even though it was a 7,00am kick off, but I checked United's score 3 times online - I covered our score because I was going to watch the recording later - and it was still nil at 76 minutes. I really thought we were going to win.

I think it was more disappointing in the end than watching it in real time.

Didn't see the game but just caught the highlights on YouTube. I know it's hard to judge by ten minutes worth of video but Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ben Godfrey appeared to have a decent game, Robin Olsen made a few blocks without any drama, and we seem to create some chances and kept fighting until the final whistle. Although I'm disappointed about getting beat, I'm not really disheartened by what I saw, and now look forward to the Sheffield Utd game.

Going to give Gylfi Sigurdsson MotM based on the highlights.
Ancelotti also said that he was happy with the intensity and commitment but I do not agree with this.

This was the biggest problem in my view, not the lack of quality players. There was no pressing and no energy from any Everton player, at any point. Was this deliberate from Ancelotti, to stand off them? Maybe so.

Sadly, it did not work and another big game passes by.
United are good, but not top of the league good, week in week out good.
Chelsea were much the same; 1-0
Leicester slightly less so; 2-0

Why change an effective, if a tad dull, winnning formation...any injuries not withstanding.
This formation worked Vs Teams that come at you a bit...not unlike United
Coleman wasn't bad in and of himself, but, unlike the unlucky to be dropped Holgate, it's his natural inclination to go forward which leaves spaces.
Mind you the problems Vs United went a bit deeper than that.

As you say, apart from injuries, why change a winning side.....
