Choices based on status for players are between joining trophy winning clubs and non-trophy winning clubs. Outside of that consideration it'll just come down to personal terms. Look at us last year with Nzonzi for example. Just went to Stoke because he could get a better wedge...same with Adam.

When we had money we attracted plenty of ambitious players. Yak and Jags in the same summer is an example.

Do you think Kevin Mirallas would have chosen Norwich, for example, over Arsenal had they been in for him in our place? Clearly not. We're an attractive proposition when we're in the top 6/7. Certainly more attractive than those in mid-table.

To decent players 6th and 7th IS mid-table. The only real difference between 7th and 10th is league place cash. That's pretty much it.

I'm talking about 11th, 10th, 9th i.e. the middle of the table with no short-term ambitions of european football. Most years 6th would be a european place. We are realistic european contenders, those in that middle section and below are not. That is very important to any mildly ambitious player.

European football, perhaps. But that's something's we haven't had for a few years yet we still signed Mirallas, Bily, Jelavic....

It's something we've been very unlucky not to get and has always been a very realistic aim for us. Unfortunately this year Swansea and Wigan had to win the domestic cups and deny us it. But we were there, right enough and we have been regularly in the very recent past. We are a european team/contender who can offer these good, ambitious players first team football and a good wage and are a far more attractive proposition than the Swanseas and Fulhams of this world, hence the signings of Mirallas etc.

Contender isn't qualifier. My point is we still attract players regardless of finishing out of the top spots...as do teams finishing lower than us...which will happen to us also (if we have the cash to spend). Martinez finishing 10th wuold not be a big deal on that level.

They absolutely haven't been until this summer. A lot of them have this summer due to a lot of teams going out and spending a lot of money, which isn't sustainable. We've been attracting players year on year due to always being in and around the euro places. It isn't the be all and end all, but it is a considerable factor amongst many that would make us finishing tenth a very, very bad move.

What changes after Cardiff, win lose or draw? How is that a defining point about anything? We lose and you fume even more, yes. And what then? Martinez falls on his sword?

Three games in and we have all the evidence we need? Do me a favour. And by the way, I'm staggered that you who holds kenwright, like me, to be the cause of all ills could hang a new manager out to dry for not having, for the most part, journeymen playing like Barcelona after 180 minutes.

Unbelievable.

This side finished 6th last season and but for a decent striker we may have got Europe. Patient is bollocks!

So you accept 10th do you mate?

Do you know how many times I've read that line of questioning being asked of any number of fellow Blues in the last 20 years? Do you know how long Roberto Martinez has been here?

Yours is the same insinuation but by a different knobhead, under a different manager in a different season. I lost patience with this nonsense long before even David Moyes arrived. If you want to ask pertinent questions, you need to be talking to one Mr. Bill Kenwright CBE.

To be fair paul, I think Dave is referring to this season. Obviously if we consistently finish around 10th then that's a whole other deal. If we finish 10th, however there is some real encouragement about Martinez's style coming together with say a strong finish to the season then that gives us ground to kick on and get back into European contention. But yes certainly on a consistent, long term basis 10th is not an acceptable target every year for the reasons you've highlighted.

For me, I reckon 7th for us this year. As our squad is certainly better than the clubs who finished below us this year and as for Liverpool I still think our first 11 is better but they have more strength in depth and good forwards. So I think regardless of the transition the quality of our squad will prevail for the most part. Not that I'd write Martinez off if we finish below 7th, but there does have to be signs of the change looking like it will help us kick on in the future.

they bored the arse off me yesterday. No tempo whatsoever. That's not the real Everton that!

Well you must have been bored several times during Moyes' reign as we served up some turgid crap during that period. You must have a remarkably short memory which is not surprising as you do need the mental capacity to constantly serve up the bull**** you do. I'll add this to the list.

It's funny how those 5 minute highlights can make us look incredible. Yes we did play football and failed to score but watching the match on Saturday wasn't like that, it seemed to take ages to get the ball forward and a lot of possession was played.
