Everton Youth Teams Thread

Beni was playing back for the 23’s last time o looked He only got game time because of unsworth.

So? He's been around training with the first team most of the season and Walsh hasn't since returning prematurely from Birmingham.

Let's look at it a little simpler: if there was a line-up of all our current central midfielders and Allardyce was stood there and asked to keep picking the players who he'd have in his team, who would he pick Walsh ahead of?

Cotteril as a barometer. Wow I’m
Sure Walsh is devastated he doesn’t rate him. And look at unsworths performance as our part time manger. And now look what sam has done. That tells you a lot
So we're just ignoring all the other coaches I mentioned and focusing on Steve Cotterill then yeah? Cool.

I mean, if Walsh isn't devastated that the manager of the team he's supposed to be playing for doesn't rate him then I think he's probably not doing himself any favours. I would guess he is, and the opinion of a professional manager probably means more to him than yours, but I don't know the lad so I could be wrong.

I'm not saying Walsh won't go on to win the Ballon D'or here by the way, simply that I've heard the 'we'll regret this forever' story so many times now it gets a bit boring. Especially when I'm still waiting for one that actually makes me feel that way.

If we had got sam in straight after koeman he wouldn’t have got a game in the 1st team , maybe the Europa dead rubber, but not in the prem.

Possibly, but we don’t know.

Regardless, Unsworth is still Under 23s manager. His input to Allardyce regarding youth players will be valued above anyone’s. No good saying Beni only got game time because he was selected to play by the Everton manager.

He can’t pick Walsh at this Moment in time. If he’s sold in Jan then that’s that. If he stays and abs one or two leave Besic? Who knows. He also probably would take guidance from unsworth about the 23’s and this is what I said last night.

Back end of koemans first season, he obviously need and extra midfielder around the squad due to some injuries. Abs williams got the job, with unsworth saying he’s ready for the 1st team Which is a million miles from the truth. This was also on the back of a bad injury, and missing a large part of the season. When Walsh had been ripping up for 23’s.

Maybe I’m looking into to deeply and unsworth wanted him to stay at the 23’s as we were going for the title. I’m
Just disappointed he hasn’t been given a chance, and after the young teams for 4 or 5 years for me he’s the best midfielder coming through.

Anyway back to work now.
A about opinions lads

Or a buy back clause at least.

Lets remember the source of this though guys. Not exactly well renowned for getting things right. Even if a bid is made doesn't mean it'll be accepted either.

I'll be devastated if he does go. There's lots to admire in this kid.

Can only imagine its so low cos we have loads of buyback/sell on clauses attached.

Probably almost a glorified loan or maybe hes just not that great in the "bigger leagues", struggled to get games for Birmingham, who are utter pants.

Hopefully this, going off of what people who's opinions I respect in here have said about him. Sounds like we can't make any judgments based on his (lack of) Brum appearences.

Maybe, but he did well when he came in, often one of our best players imo. I said a while ago that we almost had too many youngsters with potential to make it coming through in similar positions at the same time. Could have done with them having a spread of ages between them. There isn't really space for them all, even without all the senior players, so unfortunately some will have to leave :(

Each of the younger players has a separate role in the team though?

Maybe slightly, but there's too much overlap. Davies and Baningeme have played this year. Williams out on loan. (Dowell out on loan). Conelly's been playing there recently on loan. Add Walsh and any others also coming through (Adeniran). Literally too many for the center of the park just there.

Walsh, to me is a deep lying playmaker. Not a typical defensive mid, but not an attacking MF in the mold of Dowell. I think he's ideally suited to play deeper next to a true DM like Beni. I see him as fulfilling a role similar to Schneiderlin, or a poor man's Arteta. A ball playing deep midfielder. The problem is his height. Sam, for one, likes taller players in that role. Personally I would have loved to seen what he could do next to Gana or Beni in a formation with two DMs.

If we really are selling him, we HAVE to have a buyback clause. If he goes and bosses it for Bristol, who could very well end up in the Prem next year, I will be devastated. This kid is skillfull, got some snide in him (in a good way), typical Scouse footballer with a ton of skill. If he was the same height as Davies, there would be no question about him staying at Everton.

Having said that, moving on is probably what's best for Walshie personally. It's time for him to kick on with his career.

Here's a write up in the Bristol paper on him:

Wash is highly-rated at the Toffees, but could be allowed to leave to continue his development away from the club with his path to the first team blocked.

Here's all you need to know about the Everton kid.

The Lowdown
Liam Walsh is the skilled, tenacious and royal blue blooded creative central midfielder who was a vital cog in the Everton under-23s team last season.

The Huyton teenager earned wider recognition after winning the Premier League 2 player of the month for February.

Walsh has served his apprenticeship on loan at Yeovil, returned to Everton an improved player for the experience and on the back of signing a new two-year deal last September was doubly determined make the next step up.

On the back of constant rave reviews, the praise of his coaches and the buzz amongst those who had seen him, it felt as though he was ready.

“He runs games,” David Unsworth said.

He did so in an impressive win over Southampton at Goodison Park, in front of the former boss Ronald Koeman, but has failed to make the breakthrough this season.

There’s a strong argument to say that Walsh and Co. are the best second string Everton have had in a generation - a point which was reinforced with the club's Premier League 2 title win.

However, his Everton future could be brought to a close in January with a Championship move possible.

Why it didn't work out at Birmingham City
Walsh had joined the Blues on a six-month deal in August but returned to train with his parent club at Finch Farm last month.

He remains registered at St Andrew's until January 6 but has been playing for the Toffees' under-23s.

The situation is regrettable because in a mid-table scenario a clearly talented youngster could be more easily indulged.

But then again, a bit of composure on the ball might be just what Blues needed.

It’s difficult to escape the feeling the loan has been an opportunity missed by both club and player.

What the player says?
"I'll always show for the ball. I just want to get on the ball and get the team playing," he told bcfc.com in September.

"I'll probably be one of the youngest players but I'll still demand stuff off other players, it's just with way I go about things.

"I'm just a winner, I always want to win, I hate losing."

What about his future?
A move to Ashton Gate would certainly make sense with his path to the first-team blocked at Goodison Park.

We know that Lee Johnson has outlined midfield as the position he wants to strengthen in January and Walsh seems to tick all of the boxes.

A £1m transfer could well be on the cards when the window opens next month.
The creative midfielder played three time for Blues - and started just one game.

His other two appearances came off the bench, ten minutes in a losing cause at Leeds and a chunky 86 minutes replacing the hamstrung Jason Lowe in Harry Redknapp’s last match against Preston.

It was his performance in that dire 3-1 defeat, when all around him crumbled, that he arguably showed most promise.

Redknapp’s denouement was as deflating as anything served up under Gianfranco Zola yet Walsh looked to be the one prepared to look directly into the fire.

However, it would be wrong to characterise him as the new Iniesta on that display alone, his performance was more a pleasant surprise and a straw at which to clutch rather than anything much more.

It is though, probably understandable that the clamour for him to be given another opportunity has intensified while Blues have struggled to retain possession.

Liam Walsh in action for Birmingham
At the very least his set-piece delivery and ability to play in an advanced midfield role would seem to be a worthwhile option.

But he is probably a victim of circumstance - how often has that been said in the last year?

Not helped by Blues’ position in the bottom three, not helped by the common consensus that such situations aren’t the kinds in which young players prosper.

Some would point to the naive pass which put Maxime Colin under pressure in the build up to Preston’s second goal as an example of that.

And also not helped by the fact he plays in a position where Birmingham have so much competition.

Baningime Defensive midfield
Dowell Attacking midfield
Walsh deep playmaker
Williams defensive midfield
Connolly utility player

Really the only crossover would be baningime and willimans id have thought...

If we look at 2 players for each position then all but the above 2 occupy separate positions...

Bristol City's player recruitment is an exacting process. A 12-strong team reporting in to Mark Ashton analyse possible targets and careful psychological profiling takes place before any deals are completed.

And with January approaching the Bristol Post can confirm that the Robins' are interested in Everton midfield talent Liam Walsh, after news broke earlier this week of the player being a target for January.

The exciting 20-year-old has previously spent time on loan at Yeovil Town, in 2016, and the Glovers' boss Darren Way was asked yesterday about the Robins' interest in the youngster in a press conference for their game against Mansfield Town.

"I spoke to Lee [Johnson], and I said that if you buy him for a million, then you can loan him to us. So hopefully, fingers crossed, he trusts me," said Way to Somerset Live.

"I think he’s a great asset but I would be disappointed if Lee bought him and he doesn’t loan him to us," he joked.

"Having said that, if he played for Bristol City, I would probably guarantee he could handle that environment, just because of his characteristics, Lee managing the same way that I did," said Way, on the midfielder who made 15 League Two appearances for the Huish Park side in 2015-16.

"He needs to be able to play his own game, I wouldn’t say he plays one specific role.

"As a midfielder you have to be good at all aspects of the game and that’s one thing I would say Liam is very good at. He can do both sides of the game, for someone that’s so small," said Way.

City are believed to be lining up an early January deal and add another player with plenty of room to develop at a club eager to bring through young players.

A fee of around £1m has been mooted to bring the youngster to Ashton Gate.

Bristol City will now hope they can tie up a deal in January ahead of any other clubs for the England youth international.
