0-0 half time, lost 0-1 final score. It was hard to tell what kind of system we were playing at times. A fairly even 2nd half we had enough chances to score 2 or 3 but they rattled the crossbar with one cracking shot.
The youngster who’s standing out for me is Bobby Carroll. Most of the good things we did came through him. After a couple of substitutions they pushed him further forward and he not only looks like a hard tackling defensive mid but also one capable of driving forward, laying off a promising pass or shooting. Michael Collins looked pretty solid in defence. I think it will be a few years before Pedro Neves has to chose between Brazil or Portugal but he’s showing talent and promise.
Lacking a goalscorer who can put the ball away. It looked like Kieran Phillips was pushed up front and should have scored a couple of times, Max Thompson missed a good chance too after a great interchange from Neves to Carroll and a super through ball from Carroll.
I’m not sure if Adedoyin is injured, think they’ll need goals from him this season.
Edit. The other thing of note was that we were playing the ball out from the back, with the two CBs going wide to receive the ball and the full backs moving forward. Nearly came unstuck a couple of times, interesting in that I don’t think we’ve done that to the extent I saw before.

..was Carrol wearing no5? If so, I thought he at least showed a bit of attitude. I thought Neves was very much outshone by the little midfielder on the opposite team, lovely weighted passes.

Yep Carroll was the 5 playing through the middle. It was a bit tongue in cheek re Neves he’s got a long way to go yet. They certainly looked more composed on the ball than us when they broke. Early days yet. Ellis Simms played upfront in 1st half, maybe he’ll score some goals this season.

To echo much of what Blueloon said above it was interesting game. Carroll I've written about before some pages back but looks a very decent young player. I'd only seen him play in the 10 before, but he played deeper today and controlled the pace of the game, always wanted the ball, has got a bit of nastiness about him. The other player for me who caught my eye was Hunt, who again has good technique, plays with his head up and always seemed to have time on the ball. Hughes made up the 3 in midfield, and is a physical presence and that was certainly the strongest area of the side.

I was a little underwhelmed by Ellis Simms who looks a bit lad but for me seemed to lack a bit of fitness and doesn't seem to put himself about enough for me.

Watching Everton young sides you often get quite a similar pattern. technically we are very competent on the ball, we are normally combative, well organised and comfortable in possession if not incisive. We are quite reminiscent of a late Moyes side in how we play. The number 2 looked a big lad who played centre half and can hit cornfield balls well. We've seen that with Foulds before, Collins in the second half and even Gibson in the reserves. We seem to produce that sort of player well. Number 8 Hughes is quite similar to how Connolly played and Denny before him.

What we really lack is pace in the final third. We don't seem to have many magic players in that area. I think this is partly down to the money you have to pay to get them. Liverpool often pay big fees. with large wages to get lads in. Sometimes it works with Sterling but other times they can be expensive flops. We don't seem to have many reducers though and haven't really looked to have someone who create havoc in the final hird since Barkley/Hallam hope at that level.

The Portuguese lad (Bruno) played a little like Coutinho, moved in a similar way and seemed happier inside. Most of the players did, but we do lack pace and power in wide areas.

I thought they did well today, the opposition are well thought of and seemed to have a year or so on us across the pitch. They were much bigger physically. Most of our team were first year scholars which bodes well. That development makes a big difference at that level, I mentioned how Simms looked a lot bigger and so did Collins in the 2nd half. You can see players like Hughes in midfield will grow into quite a tall lad, and may grow 3-4 inches in the next year, so it makes a big difference.

Either way a decent work out, and Hunt/Carroll did very well.

Yeah agree about Rhys Hughes, he’s the other one who’s impressed me the most in these games - I’ve likened him to Dowell as he has the flicks and style in midfield. It’s interesting that most of the ones we’re talking about are 1st years, so promising in that respect re future development.

Isn’t Adedoyin with the U23’s now?
