Everton Youth Teams Thread

...I’ve been a bit disappointed in Adeniran. I liked what I saw of his time at Fulham and expected him to progress at speed given his physicality. I dare say it took him time to settle but he’s inconsistent within games, drifting in and out.

He scored a few goals of late from the right so he may have new lease of life. He’s never been sent on loan so perhaps he’s rated but I expect the likes of Onyango has already leapfrogged him in the pecking order. I might be wrong.
It’s hard to disagree with that. I do see a big difference though between them , Denny sadly hasn't shown anything, Beni has shown good patches and we really should have let him go on loan this season, instead we seemed to see him as the experienced head you sometimes need to guide the young u23s, plus being squad/bench material if injuries hit. Loan him out next season and see what happens.
We’re changing significantly the age of our Academy/U23s teams and next season, when it comes, we‘ll be even younger so time to move out even more of the older players who are unlikely to make it with us.

Just on the topic of Onyango perhaps leapfrogging Adeniran...

I think Onyango, Dobbin, Simms, John and Astley are the players Ive seen most positive discussion about in this thread.

I ask this every few months but are any of these comparable to other youth prospects weve had in the premier league at the same age in terms of quality rather than playing style?

For example, does John have similar ability level and potential to Kenny, Hibbert or a right sided Michael Ball?

Really which of these 5 players (and any others) look like potentially able to be squad players and which of them could be starters in the first 11 and players to watch?

...much more Academy expertise and knowledge on here than me, but I’d say Onyango looks a beast of a young man, I can’t think of any young midfielder we’ve had for comparison. He’ll be much bigger than Beningime. In a way, he’s probably most similar to Adeniran but I get the impression they think he could be special.

I’d say John is more a Kenny/Coleman type. My concern is he only looks small in stature. Others will have more insight than me.

Dobbin looks a goalscoring wide player to me of the Memphis Depay type, can’t think of many similar we’ve produced. Looks to get in and exploit the space behind defenders. I like him.

Thanks eggs. For Onyango is he looking like the size of Vieira / Toure and same type of athleticism? Thats the kind of feeling i had from the video snippets.

I guess if John is 5'7+ then he'll be fine, alot of smallish top notch full backs the same size as Baines. Or is he skinny in which case could benefit from Ancelotti's new team there to fill him with pasta lol

I forgot to mention Gibson, do you think he and Astley could go far or more like potential squad players?

....to me, Onyango looks more mobile than Toure, but that type of build. I think he’s got amazing physicality, its now a matter of quality in possession and I’m sure that’s what the coaches are concentrating on now. Lots of ball work, lots of ‘man in the middle’ possession sessions.

John looks solid enough, not skinny.

I like Gibson a lot, attitude is he likes to defend. Old fashioned, barrel chested type. Not the quickest, but decent on the ball. I’d say Astley is different type, lighter build but also competitive.

it’s a massive step-up for any of them, though, and I don’t think anybody could say they have futures at Everton. The concern for CBs is that we’re linked with big money buys who are young men themselves.

I would like to see our u23 line up something like this next season.

Virginia
John Astley Gibson Anderson
Quirk Onyango Adeniran Dobbin
Simms Gordon

Ages at the start of the season would be
Adeniran 21
Virginia, Gibson 20
John, Anderson, Simms, Gordon 19
Astley, Quirk 18
Onyango, Dobbin 17
The only 2 players that I would be unsure on are Anderson and Quirk but we are short in both them positions. I would rotate Branthwaite with the 2 centre backs. Also there may be opportunities for the likes of Gibson, Gordon and Adeniran with the first team and I imagine when games clash with first team games Virginia may not be available either.

...much will depend on who comes in via transfer. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few players you highlight are on loan next season. It’s going to be very difficult for any to see game time with the first team.

I agree there might be players to come in but as time as gone by I've grown to dislike the loan system more and more. I would rather keep our best players and play them in u23s in a system that mirrors the first team so if asked to step up they know the role. Obviously it's not as simple as just stepping up but I think it would definitely help in the transition. I'm most hopeful that Gibson and Gordon may at least get bench time at some point but who knows what's going to play out over the next 12-18 months.

Yeah, left back and right midfield are potentially areas of weakness. We had about 4 or 5 play LB for the u18s but none seemed to make the position their own or look able to step up yet. Midfield looks more promising with the likes of Bobby Carroll , Mackenzie Hunt coming back and the supposition that Lewis Warrington will also step up . I hope we do what we look like doing , moving some of the older ones on and moving some youngsters up . We’ll likely as not take a few batterings with potentially such a young team, and there’s a good argument that sometimes you need a core of older players to help the youngsters, equally very few are going to make it , the ones that will are likely to be stepping up and showing it at an early age.

...PL points are so precious, increasingly a youngster will have to be very special to get game time. I mean really special. The gulf between U23 and PL is massive.

I think Branthwaite will probably be an under 23 starter next season.
I believe Gibson is probably finished with under age football.

Yeah I thought that. I was just thinking that if we kept hold of Gibson as 4th choice CB instead of loaning him out it would give him game time. It's always difficult bring a 4th choice as a youngster last season it was Holgate who ultimately fell to 5th choice and went out on loan. Its always a risk doing that as for every Holgate there is a Galloway and more go the way of Galloway in my experience.

Gibson seems to have been really good for Fleetwood. Unbeaten since he joined?

My guess is a championship loan...

My concern would be if he had a couple of bad games on loan he might end up dropped and then he might not get in again. A manager further down the leagues isn't going to risk his job to develop a player for us. That could end up with a wasted 6 months. However I can't see any path to the first team at the minute and he's probably too good for u23 so it's a tricky one.

Joey Barton threw him straight in at Fleetwood. He started 9 games for them and they were unbeaten.

They sit in 5th place now in League One and I imagine Gibson was a major factor in that (lots of praise from Barton as well).

I wonder if we may send him back there for the season with a january break option to bring him back or loan him elsewhere.

Brands may also see fit to send others to fleetwood.

Is he anything like the boy at Birmingham, Bellingham?
