Everton u23s v southport
Tyrer, John, Ouzounidis, Astley, Anderson, Hunt, Iversen, Onyango, Hughes, Dobbin, Simms
Subs: Quirk, Hansen, Cannon, McAllister, Small, Higgins, Kouyate
Really interesting to see McAllister, Small, Higgins and Kouyate involved as 1st year scholars. Also 2 under 18s in the starting 11. Seems a marked shift from recent years. Perhaps the Brands influence?

Rightly so. Nice winning the U23's and all that but its pointless if they are all 22-24 and never going to make it. May as well try and introduce the younger players to a higher level earlier - if we end up coming 11th or whatever who cares, as long as players come through.
Not far off our expected “ best team “ with Branthwaite and Nkounkou to be added , as it seems Beni is going on loan , maybe Adeniran too. It’s interesting that Small is the only out and out defender, though Higgins can play right back. It’s quite a leap for Small , he’s obviously caught someone’s eye in training , but early days yet to make too many assumptions.Everton u23s v southport

This last season, before lockdown we had both our youngest u18 and youngest U23s teams for some years . A combination of Brands watching u16/u18/U23s has been the driver together with potentially our most talented youngsters for years. I’d say the average age of that starting 11 is about 18 1/2 years, with the bench average 17 years . Theyll likely take a few beatings at U23s level but I can live with that if they’re coming through young.Rightly so. We won it with a young team 4 years ago so you can do both
