Everton Youth Teams Thread

Centre Back only have 3 ideally need 4 and Left Back we only have 1 ideally need 2. I agree the rest of the squad is bloated.
I was surprised we didn’t have a CB on the bench yesterday, I guess Anderson was the cover. At under 18 I think CB is our greatest strength , we’ve got 5 , 3 in their 2nd years, two 1st years and all have played at u18 level. Two Harry Hagan and Reece Welch stood out for me last year , plus Sebastian Kristensen the young Danish lad who has been injured is still to make his mark. I think at least 1 , probably 2 of these will feature at U23s this year, I can’t believe I’m saying that about currently 17 and 16 year olds, times have changed.!

It’s Right back where I think we’re weak, no natural RB cover for John and I couldn’t tell you who our u18 RB will be , Hosie who played RB last season has gone. Liam Higgins has played RB but we may have to look like trying out someone like Seb Quirk there if John is injured , Astley needs to play CB.

The shortages I was talking about was in first team squad hence why Branthwaite and Nkounkou have been moved up. Yeah we definitely aren't short of centre back cover in youth teams its like you say RB also LB and RW.

Haha, sorry I just read your post in isolation, we need to keep this thread pure , full of optimism and away from overpaid, lazy first teamers :)

No worries it hadn't quoted the post I was replying to which would have given it said context. Absolutely keep this post pure. I hope that Mathew Malton is a RB as U18s chronically short as well. My main hope is the whatever formation is played in seniors is mirrored by the 2 youth teams.

Yes indeed , was thinking the same about Mallon a defender I know nothing about.
Looking at the pics of the game Kyle John was captain , which is interesting , but was later replaced and Ouzounidis had the arm band , so it would seem either Quirk, McCallister or Higgins played at RB .

Yeah I suspect he will, but at least for now he hasn't been forced to. I also think Besic, Bolasie and Sandro could also be named at some point if they don't secure moves away. Its a shame as it would be nice for the young lads to get a bit of an understanding going.

...the big plus for the younger lads is playing against seasoned professionals. If they shine on that stage it really is promising for their attitude as much as their quality.

Yes, I believe Matty Mallon is a RB. Good solid player and well thought of. Harry Hagan, and Liam Higgins have had run outs at RB. Also Joel Davidson is returning from a long term injury.

The u18s were in action today :
A hat-trick from Tom Cannon was the highlight of a 6-2 pre-season friendly victory for Everton Under-18s against Preston North End on Wednesday afternoon.
“Tom has carried on where he left off last season, scoring goals,” said coach Paul Tait.
“We’re working on parts of his game like pressing and hold-up play but there’s no doubt he knows where the back of the net is.”
The Blues took the lead at USM Finch Farm after 12 minutes when an effort from Charlie Whitaker took a deflection on its way into the Preston net.
Cannon doubled the advantage with his first goal just before the half-hour mark but then Everton squandered a golden opportunity to go three up when Katia Kouyate saw his penalty-kick saved.
The Blues then got sloppy and allowed Preston back into the match.
On 39 minutes Joe Rodwell-Grant pulled a goal back from close range and then a minute before the break the same player levelled from the penalty spot.
“The two full-backs in the first-half have just turned 16 years-old so they will make mistakes but it’s how they react to it,” said Tait.
“We were a bit wobbly for a 10-minute spell, but we brought seven players on at half-time and after the break we were a lot more solid.”
Cannon scored with a fine angled drive early in the second period and then completed his hat-trick on the hour when he turned in a low cross from Joel Davidson.
Kouyate then had a goal disallowed for offside before one of the substitutes, Daniel Lowey, wrapped things up with two goals in the last three minutes.
“I was really pleased with the performance and it was a perfect exercise for us because that’s our first game since we played Manchester United in March,” concluded Tait.
“We’ve had to ease them back into things after such a lay-off, but it was a good game for us and we’ve got good competition for places.”

Another very young side , and I’m taking the two 16 yr old full backs being Thierry Small and Matt Mallon. 7 players on at half time suggests not far off our full compliment getting a game, assuming Onyango and a Dobbin are with u23S. Joel Davidson getting minutes is good, as was pointed out the other day he’s been injured a while.

Good result today for the Scholars, Matt Mallon is injured and did not play today. Full backs for the first half were Thierry (LB) and Joel (RB), followed by Lowey (LB) and Hagan (RB) in the second half.

Cheers for that , re FBs, I took that from Tait’s comments that we had two 16 year olds at FB to start with. Any further team comments particularly CBs, there was a photo with a few I recognised including including Kristensen another hit by injuries early last season.?
