Everton Youth Teams Thread

DCL, Richarlison, Allan, Doucoure, Rodriguez. DCL joined us at 19, and certainly wasn't first team ready. Rodriguez only joined Porto from SA at 19. Doucoure made his Renned debut during his 19/20 season. Richarlison hadn't joined Watford. Allan hadn't moved to Italy.
DCL made his debut for the first team 4 months after arriving.. still 19. The rest didn’t come through out academy so wont talk to them except to say it’s not about when you move to Europe that you can now be considered good enough..

What difference does it make if they came through our academy? DCL didn't anyway, and he may have made his debut when he was still 19 (by about 2/3 months), but that doesn't mean he was ready to be a first team player. The other 4 are some of our best players. Were good enough at that age that they would have been considered good enough for our first team? They were just starting out in inferior leagues. If the best players in our squad now would not have been ready to be first team players before they were 20, why would you just discard out of hand any youth prospect coming from our academy for the same reason?

Didn't say first team ready.. said first team squad... So think we aligned ;)

I made the point about our academy cos you picked when Richy went to Watford, or when Rodriguez went to Porto, which ignores whether he was playing first team back in his home team beforehand.. can't be asked to trace that far back...

....after watching the U23s, I predicted DCL would make his first team debut before the end of the year which he did (signed August, debut December). My prediction was based largely on who was ahead of him in the queue, & we were struggling for effective strikers.

i think pathway to first team is not so much about being ready, it’s about leapfrogging those ahead of you in the pecking order. DCL didn’t have much opposition and grabbed his opportunity when it arose.

I think it's a good/useful way of looking at it.

Its partially why I think Onyango has been earmarked. I remember seeing him line up for the England under 17s a whole back, and he was about 3-4 inches taller than the other players, even the CBs. Obviously that gap may get closed a bit as they all get to 21, but youd imagine he will be 1- 2 inches taller than most players of his age.

In the short term though, he gives the 1st team midfield an option they dont have. Hes taller than them, and covers ground better. He will also have weaknesses, but also a unique skillset.

Price is a far easier footballer on the eye, but I'm not sure what his USP is currently. Having that USP is makes a big difference.

USP?

A lot of players in the over 22 bracket and older like Niasse have helped Unsworth‘s teams to win cups and titles.
I think the old reserve team system was better than the current model.

The reserve team was made up of players coming back from injury, players not currently in the first team and a smattering of the best young lads in the academy.
The young lads played with and learned from more experienced professionals and it helped them get ready for the first team.

The under 23 team is really an academy team and there is an enormous gap between it and the first team.
This is the reason we need to send our players out on loan.... which is always a risk.

Yes I support that view completely, adding that those reserve games were much more competitive and much better than most of the U23’s I watch today.

agree with this 100%, on a side note having gone to the likes of Southport and burscough in the 90s to watch our reserves there’d be times when there’d be a big name player coming back from injury and these grounds would be half full in anticipation...can’t imagine what sort of a hit they’ve taken financially since the U23 format has come in

Take Gbamin .. would definitely spend a few games getting himself match fit in reserves.. and there wasn't any shame in that.
