Everton Youth Teams Thread

We are bottom 3

I’m guessing that is Tom Davies as well

Man City’s is probably foden
I think it can change very quickly.
If Anthony Gordon comes back into the squad and/or JJ Kenny,Lewis Gibson or Jarrad Branthwaite? Then those numbers would change quickly or even young players like Small or Onyango.

Utd played a number of young players at the start of the season but most of them have drifted away now with McTominay and Greenwood really being the only two regularly involved.

I wonder if Liverpool did not have so many injuries what their numbers would be?

Utd have Henderson, McTominay, Greenwood and Rashford all regularly playing in their starting XI.

Our academy has been pretty poor in the past 10-15 years in truth. All our best young players have been signed from other clubs.

You need to review the quality of said players too. Just because a team has 30% of their minutes by academy players doesn't mean it's something to envy.

Would people here have players like Dunk, March etc. in the Everton side? No, so all it means is we've buying better than what we're growing.

still, being bottom 3 is abysmal

I think the old reserve team system was better than the current model.

The reserve team was made up of players coming back from injury, players not currently in the first team and a smattering of the best young lads in the academy.
The young lads played with and learned from more experienced professionals and it helped them get ready for the first team.

The under 23 team is really an academy team and there is an enormous gap between it and the first team.
This is the reason we need to send our players out on loan.... which is always a risk.
Sorry , I don’t get this rose- tinted spectacles nostalgia for a reserve team and the old Central League. In those days there were few foreign players, the loan system as we now know it wasn’t anywhere near as well developed and not that many youngsters got there chance to play. Take your “ smattering of the best young lads”. So we have what 6 or 7 older first teamers playing , that leaves about 5 places left . With no loan system in place who would you pick ? Gordon, Simms, Branthwaite, Gibson and Beningime would be the obvious choices to get games. So what happens to the other regular U23s and those playing up from u18s? . Presumably they either don’t get a game at all or play against others the same age. And I can just hear Carlo saying “ Right James and Gbamin , you’re coming back from injury, I want you to help our youngsters by playing in the reserves. You might get kicked a bit but it’s character forming”

The current U23s set up is far from ideal , but at least youngsters are getting regular competitive games and a chance to develop.

Its a pretty pointless stat. It doesn't matter where they come from, what matters is how many chances we give young players overall (which tbf is also pretty poor) Barkley still being here probably would've catapulted us to mid table. If Bernard's sale goes through then Gordon game time goes up and if JJK developed how we would've liked then we are well up there.

As others have said the ones getting opportunities at likes of Newcastle, Burnley etc. Probably wouldn't play for us anyway and those at Chelsea, Liverpool, United and City would also walk into our team it's not like Reece James, Arnold, Greenwood, Rashford wouldn't get any games here

On the same day in May 2019, Manchester United team-mates Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard posted the same cryptic message on Instagram.

It simply read ‘0.012%’ and was a reference to findings that only 180 of the 1.5m boys playing organised youth football in England will ever play a single minute in the Premier League.

That means there is slightly more chance of one of them making it into the top flight than being struck by lightning, but not by much.

The rewards are great if, like Rashford and Lingard, you reach the summit of your sport - but making it at any level is hard enough, as thousands of boys find out every year.

Told over the course of more than two decades, this is the story of just two of them, who found out the hard way what it takes and where you can go wrong, on a journey that begins in the footballing hotbeds of Merseyside and the North East and features every level from the glamour of the Premier League to the very grassroots.

In the past there was an u21s as well wasn't there? So you'd have that and the u18s, then the ones that were good enough/old enough graduated to the Res/1st team. It would suck for the rest of the FL, but I still think B teams in the Champ/L1 would be a decent shout for teams like us.
