Everton Youth Teams Thread

You would think playing for England would be a good barometer of how good a player is at a certain age.

There are still a decent number of England youth players at non-premier league clubs.

A bit surprising that they dont get picked off by the bigger clubs.

...historically, I always like it as it shows pedigree. I particularly liked if a youngster had represented England at U15 level, but it’s now become a bit diluted with internationals at most age groups.

Representative schoolboy Football isn’t quite what it was, but the really good ones should be rewarded. Sadly, the majority won’t come through which has been the case over the years,

It's definitely a good barometer compared to their peers but at youth level the standard varies year to year is dependent on positions, growth spurts etc. It's still a good sign for them and their career but it doesn't define it.

Wouldn't hurt to sign them but given how few break through in senior football the smaller teams probably dont see it as cost effective and the big ones have already hoovered up the best talent by then. Also up for debate how good it is for their career, Luke Matheson joined Wolves from Rochdale only for them to sign Semedo and Hoever in his position the next window.

I think there are certaonly more standout years. The under 21's has always been one over say the under 20's with England. Under 16's/schoolboys too.

I'll pay some notice but also worth saying that often our players aren't represented but kick on. I don't think Gordon had much of a look in until under 18 for example. Yet the likes of Kenny and Ledson were central to England teams but not quite good enough.

I saw that Small is playing up a year on himself, which is impressive enough to me, especially as he's also very young at that age group. Welch also looks a really big player at that age, bigger than Jebbison who looked like he was physically ready for mens football.

As a club, a lot is going to depend upon are we going to be brave enough to give them some exposure. I knw a lot clamour for loans, but I'm not sure they do a great deal.

Clubs have gag orders on their best players as well. I know for a fact united done everything they could to keep the media quiet on Shoretire for as long as possible. Often brief them to just report on match reports rather than profiling individuals till a certain age/level. It's in the clubs best interest to keep everything hush hush as long as possible to avoid other clubs sniffing around and keep hype down.

Thisis absolutely right as well. They do not like to have players under 16's and below mentioned. We have a top player as an under 15, but we try to keep it as under wraps as possible.

Interesting From The Athletic regarding what’s expected of academy recruitment this summer…

“With the academy transfer ban now over, I expect a renewed assault from Everton on this market especially from 16 down. They brought in a new head of academy recruitment last season, the highly-rated Chris Perkins from Derby, who will oversee the strategy moving forward.”

“I wouldn’t imagine we’ll see big changes at an under-23 level, maybe just the odd signing here or there if they feel they’re short. Lower down, they’ve run the rule over a couple of under-16 goalkeepers. James Wright, released by Manchester City, spent time on trial but signed for Aston Villa while Exeter’s Harry Lee has also spent time at Finch Farm recently. This is one area they would like to improve. Jack Patterson, 15, of Crusaders is another on the radar even if there will be interest from elsewhere.”

“The next group of academy scholars are held in high regard. Keep an eye on young England forward Emilio Lawrence believed to be the best 15-year-old striker in the country and wide player Roman Quintyne among others.”

@catcherintherye .. I take that the secret name being kept out the press you were referring to..

Yes mate.

I did mention him a while back on here, but try not too. The article in question is wrong though, as I believe he is actually an under 15 so won't be a scholar next year.

I don't want to go into enormous detail with him, but Jurgen Klopp knows who he is. Manchester City and United know who he is.

Think the fact that the "big" clubs were already aware of him and he signed with us is a good sign. The first time his name ever popped up as far as I'm aware was being specifically namedropped in an Athletic puff piece about that lots academy as the one that got away. I imagine it'll be nearly impossible for the club to keep him completely out the limelight next season given he's already got a few U18 apps and scored for us. Next year you'd think he starts for the 18s a bit with Dobbin and the likes moving up. Also seems like he could be subject to an England/Scotland tug of war at some stage. Just about managing the hype and containing expectations

Lawrence was with the England u16s camp last month, scored a couple of goals in one game. I believe he’s 15, but not 16 until after 1st September this year , so as you say not eligible for this year‘s Scholar ‘s intake .The Athletic have mentioned him a few times now.

The Athletics ‘ Roman Quintyne reference is also less than startling , given he’s played for our U23s as a Schoolboy and again mentioned in this thread quite a few times. He’s like a right back version of Thierry Small , equally as fast but not so chunky in his build.

Is it around the end of June the new scholars are usually announced?
Can never remember.

Yep, their Scholarship contracts usually go from 1st July ,to 30th June 2 years later. A few years ago we always seemed to do a “ meet the Scholars “ in the first week of July, last year it slipped a few weeks so who knows this time. From memory 7 eligible schoolboys have played at u18 this season, plus one previous England youth international who hasn’t featured, maybe injured. And maybe a new capture from somewhere ....

He looks a lot Smaller than Small to me.

Of that age group I really like Metcafle.

Yes indeed , Metcalfe‘s start and 90 mins for the U23s (Brighton?) seemed to largely go uncommented on but he was excellent, very impressive for a 16 year old and the fact he played the full game suggests a high level of fitness in someone not training full time yet.
