Everton Youth Teams Thread

He’d been ‘given game time’ out of position as a late sub in an already won cup tie at a time when we were trying to convince him to sign a new contract. It’s a big leap to suggest that was going to lead to more game time this year I think, particularly because we have someone we can use as a direct comparison (onyango) who hasn’t been given more opportunities, and chances for others like branthwaite and dobbin have been very limited.

That covers both points really, seeing as your view of him stagnant is solely based on his first team involvement rather than any actual evidence.

I have no idea why he left and I don’t really care to be honest. I just don’t see the point in rewriting history or making stuff up to make out like it was a bad decision. He’s 17, it’ll be a good few years before we know how it’s panned out for him.

They have all had more opportunities than Small though. I suppose we seem to presume other clubs are far ahead of Everton in terms of young players being given opportunities. I dont think we are perfect, but I also dont think we are miles behind.

I'm judging Small on the evidence I have available to me mate. I dont have access to his training record or whatever. He might be a great trainer. It's a forum though, and we all give our views based on what's in front of us dont we? I'll make lots of judgements on Everton players, which are really only based on their performance on the pitch (or lack of).

I'm not sure it is made up to say it's a bad decision. As of today, it looks a bad decision. Maybe in time it will become a good decision. Or maybe his plan was to move to a club who would not give him a single minutes first team football, in which case it could be a good decision. Generally though, people want to play.

Like you, I'm not overly concerned. Even at the time, while I liked Small I didnt think he was miles ahead of a number of our young players. It's a shame he went, but from the bits I've seen the lad at left back for the 18s looks just as promising, so hope he progresses well.

Giving a 17 year old full back making his full debut a 3/10 seems extraordinarily harsh unless he scored a couple of own goals!

Just to add, I didnt know hed played in the FA cup, and if he has, that sort of contradicts a lot of what I put previously. That's a big step forward, irrespective of whether he had a good or bad game. I wasnt aware of that.

Unsworth was also of course Academy Director as well as u23s manager , if we keep those titles then the job is an attractive proposition for somebody external. Lee Carsely would be my choice if we can prise him away from the England set up .
Should someone really hold those 2 jobs simultaneously? Without being an expert I'd have thought they should both be full-time jobs in themselves.

Unsworth of course was promoted to Academy Director, so yes they could split the roles again or even do away with Academy Director and deem it part of our DoF s role , it’s likely part of the current “ review”. The merit I see in keeping it as one position is that we could attract a high calibre external candidate .

According to the Echo, Mallon is off to Blackburn rather than sign a new contract. Good luck to him. Was always quite impressed when I saw him but I'm guessing that Mills might have taken the U23 spot lately.
Added: though I think I've also seen Kyle John playing at right back as well. I would have thought Mallon a better prospect than him, but who knows about injuries, etc.

He seemed to become isolated from his peer group , no pro contract , stuck in the u18s while the rest were playing u23s . The harsh verdict is that if he was rated he’d have been playing right back for the u23s, ahead of the likes of Seb Quirk and John. I’m not sure if he’s been injured recently but Roman Dixon looks like he’s bagged the u18 right back spot too after we went out of the Youth Cup. Good luck to him.

And, to be fair, the Patterson signing might have had something to do with this decision with him being relatively young as well.

Indeed. It’s shocking really that Patterson is the first proper young right back that I can remember since Kenny. We’ve tried a whole number of “ conversations “ at u23 that haven’t worked - Markelo, Charsley ,Astley, John, Quirk to name a few, even Mills was touted as being moved to right back.

No, I know a lot about Seb but it’s the lad a few years younger.

It’s a foreign name and I don’t know it at the moment but I think it might be the name above.

He was found playing on a park in Southport about 2 years ago as well. He hasn’t been in an academy all his life.
Yes , as @mightymoyes said it’s Doug Lukjanciks, he was at the England u15 goalkeeper camps August and November last year. He’s in the current u15s squad for a Italy/ Chile/ England tournament in Italy later this month.

Good luck to him. Knew he was leaving and probably for the best for all involved. Hopefully he can carve a career out in the lower leagues.

Ralph H was far from glowing in his one appearance, he was hooked at half time I think. He’s very young mind and I’m sure working on the balance to both sides of his game.
