Everton Youth Teams Thread

We are looking pretty light at centre back in the 21s.

Assuming Astley and Welch are gone, that leaves ISS and Campbell plus Jones and Tierney who are both stepping up. Feels like he's just a squad filler tbh. Especially just getting a 1 year deal.

yeh the one yr deal probably just means hes here for numbers.
ISS seemingly gone too, fingers crossed not though

What’s this seemingly gone. You maybe right but this hasn’t come from any realisable sources. Probably the same sources that said we want 6mil for Branthwaite and 30 for Pickford. Let’s wait and see before being so negative

I wonder if that was more to do with James Vaughan having a positive impact and helping to secure better loans for the youngsters
Id partly agree with that, Vaughan seems to be having a positive impact ,getting around the players on loan , reporting back . I’d say he’s more in touch with the modern demands on youngsters on loan, I think it’s Thelwell who makes the decisions though.

We seem to be favouring loans at lower levels but with more of a chance that our lads actually play. I think we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

The lower Welch goes the better. He needs a good battering by proper forwards. Personally don’t think he’s physical enough to make it same with Astley and Feeney at the time. Same with Campbell next as well.

not sure about that, feeney and astley have both shown they could cope with the physical aspect of lower league football. they just weren't good enough to play higher.

Thats a long drop to go and get first team football for an England youth international.....League 2
He’ll have 20 odd games until January to impress, if he does well we can always recall him and move him on to a League 1 side, loan poaching happens a lot in the lower leagues, League 1 sides will be watching/analysing data to see which of the PL loans in L2 can step up.

I was at a semi pro v amateur friendly last Saturday and remarked you could see the difference in physical size between the teams , and I think this is replicated as you go up the leagues. The size can be there in League 2 but there are are other aspects like speed , subtle aggression combined with strength which make a difference higher up the league. Astley or Welch couldn’t cope with Kane for instance he’d outmuscle them , unlike Tarkowski who’s better able to cope. ( I know there’s a huge difference there in ages and capabilities of Tarks compared to Astley/ Welch) . Conversely I think it’s one of the reasons Simms struggles more in the PL , he can’t bully defenders the way he does with “ less physical “ defenders in the Championship/ League 1.

Size isn’t everything of course in a defender , but it’s more and more a determining factor and may just be such a factor in how far ISS progresses .

After stints out. When they first went out they couldn’t cope. That’s my point.

I think your body grows a lot between 18-25 (and certainly in my case has kept growing!) But you do fill out into a natural shape.

Feeney is close to that age now. It's hard for young defenders before that.
