....I'm surprised at Campbell if I'm honest. It's difficult for parents to remain rational when a club of City's stature come calling but the reality is they bring few players through so you would think Campbell would've thought about this. Saying that, he might be a Rooney type.

Good example of that is young Devante Cole!
Was coming through the ranks at city scoring for the youth teams and england youth teams every single week. Gets to 18/19 and stalls, possibly loses a fair bit of confidence and goes on a couple of loans. Dosent tear up any trees on loan and is now at fleetwood trying to get his career started.
For everyone who says loans are great for young players, they are if there is an end target, with the likes of Cole there wasent really.
Liverpool acadamy have done the same for years, i think thats why Klopp has called alot of them back

thats why im highly dubious about our loans, martinez will say theres a plan in place but we all know he talks tripe.

Southampton highlights here lads.
Wonderful goal from Dowell, was unlucky not to get another one with a top save from Gazzaniga from 25 yards]
Thanks to Southamton for those highlights. It was interesting to see Galloway playing at 3, seems like he played into the 2nd half then was replaced by Foulds, strange he didn't play whole game , maybe a pointer for weekend cup squad. Callum Connolly playing at 6 alongside Pennington seems to be working well at this level. He , Connolly , has played LB , RB and CB so far this season and is accumulating experience in different aspects of the game all the time . Galloway, Holgate, Pennington, Kenny have been grabbing the defensive headlines while Connolly quietly goes about his business . I wonder if he's now seen as a CB or LB , still got some way to go yet so getting experience in both positions is just what this level is all about. Must be between him and Joe Williams for player of the season so far, based on consistency , though great to see Dowell grabbing the headlines with a sumptuous goal , quick look up, barely any back lift almost a dink.

Nothing's perfect, mate.

Yes, you can stay in the youth teams where you are Billy Bigballs and the coaches love you, it doesn't really matter if you are up the top of the table and (if you really have a chance of getting in the first team squad) you are better than most of your opponents.

On the other hand, you can go and play for someone like Fleetwood and get some old pros standing on your feet at corners, giving you a hard time if you make them look bad and your team-mates worrying about their appearance and win bonuses.

From the positive side of staying at home, you get schooled in the club way of doing things. From the negative side of going away, yoou can get chucked in the deep end, playing in front of moaning crowds in crap stadia and with players who never pass to you because you are only there for a month or two and they think you believe you are better (which you might be).

Pretty obviously, the club try to do the best for the young players because it is in their interests. Sometimes a loan might happen because someone is ready to go out and experience something else. Sometimes it might happen to give a lad a taste of 'real football life' if he is getting a bit big for his boots. Sometimes a loan doesn't happen because nobody suitable has a space in that position or the place gets taken by another lad from elsewhere that has better connections with that club.

I can't remember the difference these days between when I was 17 and when I was 21 but I'm pretty sure I was a completely different person - mainly because I had experienced a lot more.

Probably a good argument there for the b team side
David Moyes was on the radio recently saying how he liked the Spanish B side concept but being realistic in saying that it would never happen in England because it would never be accepted by the non-Premier clubs and their supporters. He wasn't bemoaning the fact , just stating the obvious.
One problem with assessing the loan system's merits is that roughly 90% will be English academy products . We know that if we are lucky we get one or two into the PL squad per year , and if you were to take into account all PL teams not many established players could be said to have benifitted from the loan system . Harry Kane is the obvious one, Ross got experience but views vary as to how much his loans benefitted him. But it goes back to my earlier point very few academy products are making it through anyway at PL level when it's just so easy to either buy in a foreigner or a talented English player developed by someone else at a lower level, like Stones, Galloway, Deli Ali.
So while the loan system has its faults, there are also other significant factors in play which don't help in developing our young talent, like money available to buy in experienced players and lack of patience in the bigger clubs to give their youngsters time to develop. We were willing to pay £4mill for the 22 year old RB Sam Byram, now I don't know what he was like at 18, but there's a good chance that the 18 year old Jonjoe Kenny will be equally as good at 22 and save us a lot of money ..... if we have the patience to allow him to develop.

Regarding those last two posts, there was an interesting story in the Mail today about City youngsters (U16-18) hesitating on signing contracts because of the arrival of Guardiola and him signing up plenty of adult talent and blocking their progression. Might just be journo guff but thought it was interesting, especially given the upheaval over at the Utd youth programme.

I do feel that city are heading for a major problem with regards to their academy, on sky this morning it said that Utd have had 15 academy players have made their debut for the 1st team in the last 4yrs, not sure what city's is but I bet it's nowhere that number, if you were a young player with a decision to make looking at those statistics I know which I'd choose, That 200m academy has to start paying it's way soon

Off topic alert. Reminds me of the Mark Twain quote " When I was 17 I couldn't believe how bad my old man was , he knew nothing , got nothing right. By the time I was 21 it was amazing just how much he'd improved"
