Everton Youth Teams Thread

Rekik and Boyata and Rony Lopez.

The level of coaching City are giving kids is way above most clubs, and they are loaning players out to really good European clubs, while we send ours to Oxford and Barrow!!

Young players will see City as a great gateway to Football, its not just about becoming a City player.

Very good point i think is this one. Chelsea in a similar way too.
Everyone wants the much hyped city or chelsea future star on a loan deal as it see's them striking a relationship with a massive club.
My guess is if Ledson, Kenny, Walsh, Henen were at city or chelsea they would all of got loans out to the championship or someone like Vitesse or Celtic.
Even if you get released by Chelsea/City at 20/21 you have more chance of finding a higher up club then you would if you were released by Everton (e.g Lundstrum)

Thanks for all the updates everyone ... best way to keep up to date with the U's.

Southampton highlights here lads.
Wonderful goal from Dowell, was unlucky not to get another one with a top save from Gazzaniga from 25 yards.

Love that Saints take this level seriously with media ... although the way that guy does the last word emphasis thing when he speaks is just hilarious the longer and longer you listen to it.

Well they sold 2 players for combined £15 million in the summer from that academy, its as much a revenue stream as it is to produce players for the City first team.

Your right it is a revenue stream but there's no guarantee it'll make that sort of money each year, but the point I was making is as a young player who would you choose and as it stands for me it would have to be Utd. I've attended both academy's lately and city's has a feel of a mass production line about it with players from all over Europe attending, (not saying that's a bad thing ) while Utd seemed more player friendly, and a more friendly feel about it ( if that makes sense )

I noticed you mention this before. How do you think we are a mixture (in other words, what are we taking and leaving from each approach) and do you think it works well for us and the youth players or should we be going one way or another?

We tend to still focus a lot on results even at younger age groups compared to other clubs. For example, in simple terms, Utd will encourage centre halves to dribble out like Stones and if they lose it and costs them a goal it doesn't matter, just try the same again. Players don't have to pass, if they fancy a run, have 1, show your own talents off. They don't tell the younger ages how to play, they're letting them manage themselves in academy fixtures, organise themselves, agree how they are going to play and the coaches just watch. There not putting structure into training and doing hours and hours on tactics such as playing off a strong centre forward and getting runners around him, they just play lots of internal 4 aside small games so the kids have loads of time on the ball and lots of chances to express themselves. Something we've even heard form Martinez recent what these clubs do is not tell the players not to do something, they let them do it, make the mistake and see if they learn for themselves. they want them to make mistakes as they believe it's the best way to learn. If you tell them not to do something then they become like robots and can't think for themselves when they are older which is part of why they let them pick there own teams and tactics.

We are a lot more results driven, kids are told to lump it if under pressure, we don't really want them making mistakes in games anyway and we tend to have a lot of athletic / stronger kids and to a degree it works for us as we are good we do seem to attract the better players after City cause like anything the better players want to play for the best teams. If you get the best kids then you have the best chance of finding the next top players although coaching wise I feel we are a mixture between developing teams and individuals. Our younger teams have the same players playing the same positions week in week out and look a lot more like a professional team when they play as everyone knows there job and must be doing it.

I have seen some unbelievable development in players due to good coaching though and it's very rare the best players now are even the best players in 12 months time when we're taking about kids still in school.

Clubs aren't really looking for pace, power and strength anymore when scouting, if you excel in that department only you may have a 20% chance of getting signed. It's all about technique, if you have loads of that and are comfortable on the ball you'll get your chance at a club if you have even average pace and strength.

Harry Kane had very little success on loan, and i remember people thinking he was utter shoite at the time. Appearances and goals below

2011Leyton Orient (loan) 18 (5)
2012Millwall (loan) 22 (7)
2012–2013Norwich City (loan) 3 (0)
2013Leicester City (loan) 13 (2)

I think the loan system has a good place in making the lads into men when it comes into realising they aren't born with a silver spoon and if they want to make it they have to get their head down and work hard. Ross didn't have a great time of it on loan, but probably grew up having grocs and journey men play against him.

The only problem i have with the loan system is if the clubs don't have the same outlook and mentality as the club the player comes from, it could be detrimental to how they develop.

to be fair kane was utter shoite 2 years ago, the improvement in him is astounding. just shows not to write someone off at 20 yrs old

Definitely i think thats my point - there is an expectation for these young lads to goto these clubs, a lot of the time in leagues where they become a target for rough treatment, to go there and light the league up assisting scoring and getting man of the match "they come from the premiership you know".

Reality is the expectation should be for them to experience first team football and come back grown up and a little hardened to what it means to be playing for something week in week out.

I like the walsh lad, he seems to have gone away and is knuckling down and taking no prisoners, for the size of him i was worried he would be roughed up... he has left his mark on more of that league then it has on him.

I disagree regarding the coaching, the level of coaching they get at all the grade 1 academies now is outstanding. Ive' banged the City drum a few times in this thread and it's very succeful but not due to the quality of the coaching more due to the money they are spending on there players even at kid level.

I know a lot of the coaches at City but for me your child is best developed at another club not City as they are about developing teams, not individuals. For example at the lower age groups they sign the best players from clubs,
paying money so they are bound to be succeesful but at that age it doesn't matter. They're pigeon holing these kids, building teams, setting structures and have the kids passing the ball to death at City at ages 9 and 10 whilst clubs like Spurs and United have them trying to win there indiviual battles, developing there own individual talents as they believe they can teach them structure and passing later on as it's much easier to do. Liverpool are also going that way now whilst we are a mixture of both.

For me City don't care about developing players really, they just want to be the best now at every age group.

I also know of other top young 15/ 16 year olds who are also about to walk out on City but I don't want to name them in this thread yet as it hasn't happened yet, but it will do and I'll bump this when they do.

Whats the score with the keeper we just signed, was he not good enough for them or any other reason why he joined us?

I guess your mates there would give you the goss?

The kids that may leave city, could they join us?

walsh has to be one of the bravest players i think ive ever seen, watched him in pre-season playing a proper mens team and to see him getting stuck in against players twice the size was brilliant. that and the fact he is technically top notch gives him a great chance of making it at everton even if he doesnt grow another inch.

Im interested to learn the difference between him and Ledson as it seems they have the best chance to be Barrys replacement in-house when he moves on.

I can find out easily regarding the goalkeepers but they must not of wanted him as we would have had to pay a fee otherwise.

The kid(s) or one in particular who is considering leaving is good and highly sought after. We'd take him in an instant but he's going to come with a big fee as City wouldn't want to lose him so a high professional development fee will be due that I doubt we'd pay.

For what it's worth, I expect him to end up at Liverpool but I'll bump this thread when he moves.

Yep - good lad is Walsh, from what i have seen of him his technical ability is brilliant. I have seen a few of the games while he has been out on loan and genuinely been worried watching him go in for some tackles which he has no right going in for.

He shone in every one of them situations, the lad must have balls of steel - cos some of the players he went in against where grocs in comparison. 9/10 he took the ball too.

I just hope the loan does what i was talking about - make him grow a bit and he comes back biting at the heels of those infront of him to get into the first team squad.

I don't know enough about what the coaches at EFC think about him, only bits and pieces i have picked up, but i would love to see Walsh and Dowell in the squad pushing players next season.
