Everton Youth Teams Thread

I can find out easily regarding the goalkeepers but they must not of wanted him as we would have had to pay a fee otherwise.

The kid(s) or one in particular who is considering leaving is good and highly sought after. We'd take him in an instant but he's going to come with a big fee as City wouldn't want to lose him so a high professional development fee will be due that I doubt we'd pay.

For what it's worth, I expect him to end up at Liverpool but I'll bump this thread when he moves.

Its weird we always sign a keeper, every year. I wonder why we dont go after someone highly rated and instead always seem to get free players....
We have so many of them now...makes more sense to me to go and pay money for someone potentially amazing.

If this player is so well.regarded then surely we would pay a fee down?

I think he would be about £1 million and he's only a kid.

I don't think he'll come here either.

Yep - good lad is Walsh, from what i have seen of him his technical ability is brilliant. I have seen a few of the games while he has been out on loan and genuinely been worried watching him go in for some tackles which he has no right going in for.

He shone in every one of them situations, the lad must have balls of steel - cos some of the players he went in against where grocs in comparison. 9/10 he took the ball too.

I just hope the loan does what i was talking about - make him grow a bit and he comes back biting at the heels of those infront of him to get into the first team squad.

I don't know enough about what the coaches at EFC think about him, only bits and pieces i have picked up, but i would love to see Walsh and Dowell in the squad pushing players next season.

id give him gibsons spot in the 1st team squad next season.

What i dont really understand is that Galloway moved up and so it seemed we signed Foulds due to this to come in at the younger age group....perfect.

We also seem to sign at least one 16 year old keeper every year and now have like 6 of them for 2 squads.

I know this method failed with liverpool as they did it en masse but why would we not take more George Green type punts? There must be quite a lot of players around the england youth setups at lower level clubs who we could be in for....?

Surely if we need a keeper for example then rather than signing this kid from city we should see who the very best kid is in england and make a cash bid for him...do this a few times and one will make it worthwhile.

There's a few questions in that.

1) On the goalkeepers. Yes I have to agree with you on that, the approach seems to be a bit muddled from what I can see. As a club (and a region) we have never really developed good goalkeepers. I don't know what the plan is with that really, it seems a bit scattergun.

2) As regards George Green punts, I think we do. Up until recently it was clear from what Elstone said we didn't have the money too. With extra money we are certainly taking more chances on players, it has allowed us to make more "punts". This has been seen with Foulds, Holgate, Galloway, Tarashaj all coming in.

Why don't we do it more? It's firstly an issue of scouting, you have to see the players. Secondly the player has to want to leave. If you have too many players blocking the way then in all honesty why would you leave your club? This is a risk we run. Take Dele Alli and compare him to Loftus Cheek. Both the same year group. Up to age 18 Loftus Cheek was the better player, but Alli's experience of playing 50 times for MK Dons has seen him rapidly overtake Loftus Cheek.

Finally the price has to be right. Patrick Roberts looked a top player but has been sold for 12 million. He's yet to play for City. It's a big outlay for a lad with a handful of games. Liverpool went and signed Gomez, don't believe they told you they paid 3.5 for him it was nearer 8 million. Again a huge outlay for a lad who I've seen have two ok games for Liverpool.

Even with all the additional money those sort of fees are large and as a club we are always struggling with the dilemma of needing players for the here and now.

What you have to consider as well, is the England youth squads are not always the best indicator. Normally 1 in 4 maybe 1 in 3 will play in the premiership. It's a big risk as there is a lot of development to go.

I think on the recruitment side we now have a nice balance.

well barkley is only one thats made it as first team regular in the last 5 years or so, not great.
In that time we've had Browning make a number of appearances, as well as Garbutt probably getting significant game time.

We have also moved on players like Forshaw for deals running into the million (when you consider the sell on fee) and Duffy likewise. Both pay for the academy for another year.

The reality is we have only brought through 1 world class player in the last five years. We have brought through a number of lads who've played for Everton though.

walsh has to be one of the bravest players i think ive ever seen, watched him in pre-season playing a proper mens team and to see him getting stuck in against players twice the size was brilliant. that and the fact he is technically top notch gives him a great chance of making it at everton even if he doesnt grow another inch.

Yes absolutely. As I've said before Walsh has always reminded bit of a little Paul Scholes in how he plays.

I disagree regarding the coaching, the level of coaching they get at all the grade 1 academies now is outstanding. Ive' banged the City drum a few times in this thread and it's very succeful but not due to the quality of the coaching more due to the money they are spending on there players even at kid level.

I know a lot of the coaches at City but for me your child is best developed at another club not City as they are about developing teams, not individuals. For example at the lower age groups they sign the best players from clubs,
paying money so they are bound to be succeesful but at that age it doesn't matter. They're pigeon holing these kids, building teams, setting structures and have the kids passing the ball to death at City at ages 9 and 10 whilst clubs like Spurs and United have them trying to win there indiviual battles, developing there own individual talents as they believe they can teach them structure and passing later on as it's much easier to do. Liverpool are also going that way now whilst we are a mixture of both.

For me City don't care about developing players really, they just want to be the best now at every age group.

I also know of other top young 15/ 16 year olds who are also about to walk out on City but I don't want to name them in this thread yet as it hasn't happened yet, but it will do and I'll bump this when they do.

It's not one of the lads they poached off us is it? Their under 16's team results wise is outstanding really. The only team I've seen annihilate us at youth level.

yeh was talking about players that have become regulars for us. hopefully we can add the likes of dowell and walsh to barkleys name in the next few years

But, when you total up who we have brought in at U21 and who is developing, it's not a poor bunch:

Garbutt - chance to make it to first team regular, you would expect a decent Championship transfer fee if not
McAleny - ditto
Browning - ditto
Pennington - ditto except perhaps Championship/League One fee

Tarashaj - yet to come to club
Rodriguez - yet to do anything spectacular
Galloway - first team squad regular
Foulds - prospect, just joined
Holgate - prospect, just joined
Henen - inconsistent and injured at League Two level
Junior - inconsistent and injured at League One level

Grant - good loan at League One, needs to add consistency at higher level, running out of time?
Ledson - up and down loan at League Two, still young
Kenny - raves for initial League Two loan perfomances, still young
Walsh - ditto and still young
Dowell - played in friendlies and dead leg of Europa Cup, yet to go on loan

Thorniley, Duffus, Dyson and now Donohue - been out on loan at non-league level as well as some of the keepers (lose track of them if I'm honest)

Just as a matter of interest, since League careers were mentioned earlier, here are some of the more recent Academy graduates who are still playing League football:

Kieran Agard - Bristol City
Hope Akpan - Blackburn
Jake Bidwell - Brentford
Victor Anichebe - WBA
James Vaughan - Birmingham City
James Wallace - Shrewsbury Town
Adam Forshaw - Middlesbrough
Shane Duffy - Blackburn
Anthony Gerrard - Oldham
Mark Hughes - Accrington Stanley
Jose Baxter - Sheffield Utd
John Ruddy - Norwich City
Hallam Hope - Carlisle Utd
John Lundstram - Oxford Utd
Matthew Kennedy - Port Vale
Jack Rodwell - Sunderland
Shkodran Mustafi - Valencia
Iain Turner - Tranmere

(Sure I've missed a few there who are still playing. Not sure if you would call Kennedy or Mustafi Academy graduates, to be fair.)
