Everton Youth Teams Thread

As I was going through the players for the list above, I noticed Gethin Jones. I assume he's been injured because he was out on loan last season. Antonee Robinson as well who had done well in preseason.
As ever we really struggle to find info on our young players when they're injured, Gethin Jones was certainly "missing presumed injured" until recently , but he was playing ar right back for U21s the other night. Antonee Robinson is a mystery to me, just disappeared completely , again presumed injured, shame for as you say he looked very promising at LB in the pre season games . I wonder if we are getting this aspect right , there is a case to say shield the youngsters from too much early publicity, speculation etc equally it must give an injured player a bit of a boost if he does a short interview saying how he is , progress being made on the injury , brief message of support from the Unsy etc.

I heard he is spending some time away from football, to teach his parents how to spell.

What do you see as the differences with him and Ledson? I was thinking one of them or both could come through behind McCarthy in DM when Barry moves on.

Oh well thats a good question. That could be a short or a long response really.

Ledson is far more functional and probably ready to step up sooner. Watching him play was often like watching a young Rodwell play (as a 15-16 year old). He is over 6 ft and got an athletic build, and a good array of long passing. Unlike Rodwell he has a really nasty streak too him which I always felt Rodwell lacked and never developed.

Walsh is very small. When I first saw him I though he looked like a Leon Osman type who picked up clever positions. Lesson has a good passing range but Walsh's is ever better with both feet. There was an under 18's derby against Liverpool which we won 5-0 and Walsh just ran the game. I have never really seen Ledson do that.

Having said that he is a little further away because of his lack of height and physical presence, these things do matter. I would hope Ledson may be able to step up next season and have a similar role to what Browning/Galloway have had this season.

Walsh is a bit trickier. It may be a bit longer until we see him as I think they will want him to either grow a little more or get get more experience of mens football.

I am not sure Ledson will ever be a Barry type player. There is a lot of the young Gerrard about him and like Gerrard he will probably be best as more of a box to box midfielder. Walsh has the technical skill but you can't discount Barry's physicality in replacing him.

I suspect Ledson may step up this summer and he will need too really. With Gibson likely moving on, Cleverley/Barkley looking better in advanced roles and Osman's minutes being limited it will be a big opportunity for him.

Yes absolutely. As I've said before Walsh has always reminded bit of a little Paul Scholes in how he plays.

Hi mate, I think it was last summer when the debate around who should be playing the No 10 role was being hotly debated, that Martinez said we have a young lad who we think can play that role in the not to distant future, with your knowledge of our youth players who do you think he meant.

There is lads on here who know a lot more about our youth set up than me.
But I would say dowell, who's whole game looks set up for the 10 role. Antony Evans also could be in the frame though he can seem to play in more positions IE. Upfront and in wide areas.

Just another point about ledson & Walsh. I think Tom Davies will also be in the mix with these two.
Don't think he turns 18 till the summer and to play a full season at 21 level at 17 and shine is pretty impressive.
Next 3/4 yrs going to be interesting to see which ones step up.

Thought that Joe Williams was highly thought of too? got a whole glut of central midfielders there!

Yes I remember that too buddy. I think I said at the time it could have probably been one of 3.
1) Dowell, the obvious number 10 who he likes a lot.

2) Walsh, the only reason I thought of this was because he said he can "play from deep" which is what Walsh does. Likewise he was a bit away from the team which again Walsh is.

3) Evans. In all likelyhood I think he meant Anthony Evans. Of all of our players aged say 20 and downwards to 16, Evans is the best player we've ad, and for my money the best I've seen since Barkley.

What is interesting, is when Dowell and Evans both play for the reserves, Dowell plays off the right and Evans takes the number 10 role. That can change in the game, but that is generally how they set up.

I recon we go all ajax 95 and play everyone from the youth team.
Just go mad

Back 4 of Kenny, Holgate, Galloway, Garbutt (sell stones to fund our stadium)

Midfield 3 of Walsh, Williams & Ledson

Front 3 of Dowell, Evans & Kone

Keep Howard in goal too
