Everton Youth Teams Thread

....love watching youngsters playing footy. Whilst it's great to see quality, what's more important are the life skills and friendships gained from just playing. Encourage your son to enjoy his footy, he'll have friends for life.

Great post, I do just that mate, he absolutly loves playing, loves every session he has no matter what the weather. He wants to improve too, so works hard and is always smilling.

The greatest sport in the world

Not just for youngsters mate. This time last year I started playing " Walking Foitball" with a group of strangers who like me were mainly over 60s. Still having good matches and great banter a year later. ( I started a thread on it but let it die as it became just a repetition of the old jokes I'd heard many times.) I know you used to play once, you should give it a try , over 50s set up all over the country, amazing how the ole touch comes back!

Reading that, it's taken from an interview on Everton TV where's there's a 40 min round up recently. Anyway, it does come over more strongly in the spoken word that Martinez is likely to give Dowell a chance before the end of the season. It showed the goal again, but missed out his excellent strike in the fIrst half which brought out a great save from their GK. Thanks again to Southamton FC for showing us what ETV missed out.
As an aside, Man City's team that lost 5-1 to Chelsea the other day had 3 starters and one coming off the bench who were also in the u21 team we beat 1-0 the other month., which suggests we have some talented youngsters around. But many will also will say " there you go that's what you get when you play youngsters, same happened to Liverpool in the cup " . I think we missed the opportunity to have a couple on the bench in earlier rounds, that opportunity has gone now. I will be disappointed if Roberto doesn't take some opportunity to get some youngsters on the bench and onto the pitch at some stage this season.

In all honesty mate, Liverpools young players have performed very well. The likes of Stewart and Brannagan have done really well and for me been better than the likes of Can and Milner so far this season. Our under 21's have beaten them twice this season, so it goes to show, the step up can be made.

I hope we look to blood some more in the cups next season.

I find it interesting the article has come out in the Echo about Broadhead. There is quite few firm assertions in it about him being one to watch for the future. In all honesty, it's about as praiseworthy as I have seen for any young player in the last couple of years.

There is no doubt that the Echo have been briefed on it. Someone in the club is giving him a bit of a write up there.

As for the lad himself I have covered in an earlier post I certainly won't be jumping up and down until he breaks into the under 21's. He is a young 2nd year scholar though and still 17. He is still growing up a bit physically and as Eggs has said has come on a lot in the last 12 months. A bit of a late bloomer there.

I think the club has also tried to keep more continuity this season on the playing sides of things. In all likelihood our desire to push players up cost us winning the under 18 league for the second year running last year. It almost led to relegation for the under 21's as well. While players have gone out on loan, for both teams there appears to have been an effort made to keep key players in each team.

For example Williams, Davies have not gone out on loan yet with the under 21's, while Donuhue, Broadhead & Brewster have not moved up to the reserves. I do wonder if that was a conscious decision. The alternative is, having moved a remarkable number of players up to under 21's over the last 2-3 years we have filled a lot of spaces up and we can be more patient again?

I'm not sure. However it will be interesting to see how Broadhead gets on next season. His numbers are very good and has really come on from last season where he was normally a substitute. It will be very interesting seeing how he progressing alongside Dowell. Both play similar positions, both highly rated but both have done it almost the opposite ways.

Powell has been pushed through from under 16's upwards to play well above himself. He has played very few games at his right level (i.e. under 18's). Broadhead has alternatively never really played above his age, despite excelling in his age group. As a general rule and certainly at Everton the attitude would be discard performances in your own age group and really only take note of the lads who play higher.

I do wonder though, with some of the changes we have seen above if that is changing a little? Roberto is always keen for players to go through certain markers to prove they are ready. I hope Broadhead can continue to do that as at under 18's he looks a very exciting talent. I also think the article on the main site and in the Echo have not arrived in a vacuum and people within the club obviously think highly of him.

.....I highlighted the Liverpool 'youngsters' who played in the cup defeat at West Ham. They performed very well but other than one 18 year old, the others were generally about 21. They were similar ages to Lukaku, Stones and Barkley who have played a large number of senior games and are established international footballers.

A bit of a double bit but thought Liam Walsh deserved a shout out in this thread too. Same Scholar year as Dowell and Broadhead, our youngest player at a League club and earning massive plaudits from team mates and fans alike down at Yeovil. Many here also read @atrottel excellent Everton Players on Loan thread if you don't take a look and some great contributions on Walsh from @Coffee and TV . Or you could wait for the Echo to catch up in a few weeks :-) We've got two great threads covering our youngsters , it's nice just to enjoy their progress without any pressure yet at this age.

Yes I agree, Brannagan is 19 though and played well. The point is though these are the lads who play regularly for their under 21's. Our lads tend to be a fair bit younger. I suppose it shows what can be done.

Erm, feeling a bit nerdy scanning those fixtures like I would a new PL season. The top two in each mini division have got the four home games (3 away) so that's an advantage to us , but of course so too do the other "favourites" Chelsea and City. City at home then Reading, Chelsea away looks a tough start but it'll tell us a bit more about the calibre of our current u18s .
As I understand it, the winner of this league goes forward into a complicated UEFA Youth League knock out stage which if they progress through gets them into a Group stage. The Group stage teams are those still left from the youth teams of the same 32 clubs that start off the Champions League proper. A bit of a daft system to me that assumes senior Championship League teams will be the best at youth level. E.g. None of Leicester, Arsenal , Spurs or Man U u18s have made this league of 8 but at least 3 are likely to make UEFA Youth League. A far better incentive for u18s would be top 4 of this league enter the UEFA league , make it more competitive too.

I pointed that out to my pals myself, they were creaming off that Teixeria and he is older than McAleny who is like 46.
Brannagan, Rossiter, Chirivella, Ojo & Conor Randall you would class as promising youngsters (18-20).
The likes of Stewart, Smith, Texiera seem all abit Jay Spearing to me

And cost a fortune.

Enjoyed watching this competition last time we were in it

An Everton Under-19s squad will take part in the 2016 Dallas Cup in March.

The Blues’ Academy have been invited to the prestigious youth tournament for a fourth time, having reached the semi-finals in 2015 and 2012.
It's a terrific tournament and quite competitive. The rules for this year's tournament set the U19's as "U19: Male players born August 1, 1996 & later" - thoughts on who may be in the squad? I've some business travel to Dallas that I need to schedule, so if I can work it just right.....
