Everton Youth Teams Thread

“Kieran is not going to go out on loan, his injury stopped him from having those 25 sessions he should’ve had with the first-team this season and clearly the programme is for him to have those before he needs to be reassessed and we see what he needs,” Martinez confirmed.

does this mean all players have to have 25 sessions with the 1st team before they go out on loan?

This was a very interesting article. In spite of the Echo's headline I don't think it was as praiseworthy of Dowell as it might seem. What I get from it is that Dowell hasn't gone out on loan because he is not ready to yet.

Clearly Martinez has a plan that he wants players to follow. Experience in the under 21's, training with the first team, followed by loan experience and game time before being ready to play. Overall I think it's positive because it gives a structure and a plan for the young players. It also gives them measurable goals to be assessed against as opposed to just requiring a large jump from 18 year old to first team. It also makes sense, each step seems logical and builds on the one before it.

The difficulty is that it can become formulaic. If you take someone like Wayne Rooney he might have been held back by having to jump through the hoops. I also wonder if lads like Walsh getting rave reviews will jump the cue ahead of Dowell who is impressing? I'm not sure if that's a bad thing but it does seem a bit odd that Dowell can be training with the first team but also knows he may need to play out on loan before he gets an opportunity.

I remember when Jeffers first played for us. He was doing well for the under 18's and stepped up and showed he was probably our best striker from relatively left field. There is a lot in that for me. If we take a lad like Broadhead who is in fine form for the under 18's, when he is flying and at his best it may mean he can come in and make an impact. Does he need the thought through procedures? Or should we give a youngstar the chance when they are flying?

There's a lot on Dowell, they think highly of him and have done for a number of years. I think he's a bit further away though. I wondered if he would skip the loan stage altogether, but it looks like he will be loaned out next year. It's no major problem, he is still an under 18. Just a bit of an odd article.

To answer your original question, yes I think he's looking to get young players 25 training sessions as part of the plan.

Yeah, there have been a few like Brewster, Graham, Thorniley , Donohue who have gone out to "non league" teams when they are 2nd year Scholars and limited/no u21 exposure. There seems to be a general rule that to go to a League club they have done 2 years as Scholars , played U 21s and had exposure to 1st team training - Ledson, Kenny , Grant, Henen for example. Then like any general rule there are exceptions like Walsh and (nearly) Dowell both still 2nd years but with 1st team training exposure and following a programme that includes loan experience.
As ever just me surmising on criteria, don't know for certain as an obvious candidate for a loan would be Joe Williams but maybe he's seen as central to our u21 team's success and progress.

I mentioned this is a couple of pages back. I think there's been a bigger attempt to keep sides together this season. Last season when we threw away the chance to win the under 18's league and nearly got relegated form the reserves taught them a fair bit, notably they couldn't take such things for granted.

I think Unsworth has probably stipulated he wants a little more continuity. It doesn't mean it will always be the same player all of the time, but if a lad makes himself central to the team, they don't look to disturb it until the following season where they can start again. I am a big fan of loan football but Williams has really come on this season, as has Connolly And Davies who have proven to be the spine of the team. Would they have benefitted from being sent out on a two month loan to Rochdale? I am not so sure.

Likewise there are now a group of solid under 18's 2nd year pro's who look ready to step up. We can look to loan out Davies, Williams and Connolly next season and keep the likes of Donuhue, Broadhead as more central figures.

I think there's been a little change of approach and overall I don't think it's been a bad thing.

Just in case it's missed as I know some people just pop in occasionally, it is worth watching the YouTube clip in the link provided by Southampton. It's better than ours and shows Dowell's first half shot from outside of the box which if it hadn't been brilliantly saved everybody would have been talking about. Oh and look out for Joe Willams , no8 , just a short clip but he is involved a number of times both as an AMF and DFM.

ya big headline but not much substance in what was written below it.if he had not scored that goal there probably would not have been an article written.

ya agreed re broadhead it is very difficult to know what to do with them.leave them progress away or throw them in the deep end and see do they swim.before Brewster went on loan he was banging them in.worth a cheeky game or 2 on the bench or is that exposing him to much.

suppose with our position in the league and the form we have been in the last 2 seasons it would take a manager with big balls to be giving these lads a chance and I don't think Roberto is that man but I would definitely like to see at least one on the bench every week.we are supposed to have one of the best crop of youngsters in the country yet the lot across the park, man utd and others seem to be blooding their young lads and we never see ours so is it a case we will have to many lads without first team experience all looking for it at the same time.

Martinez dosent have a great track record for blooding kids 19 or younger really, if you look at the young players we would give him responsibility for Lukaku 20, Barkley 19, Stones 19, Galloway 19, Browning 20, Garbutt 21, Pennington 20.
I cant see him throwing a 17/18 year old kid in at all. Everyone of the players named have had 1st team football somewere else before they were regulars in the squad (aside from browning although he did go to wigan for a couple of games)

I wonder as well if players like Williams, Connolly and Davies to name three would have made the same progress if Ledson , Grant and others had stayed at the club this season ?

Right, but it's his knack of not being afraid to them put those youngsters into the first team in the Premier League.

Bar Lukaku and Barks (and three games is pushing it), none of the above had any Prem experience and only Stones had played at Championship level (even so only just having played like 20 games tops for Barnsley?).

He's signed two of those players and he's not been afraid to throw them in when needed. He deserves as much credit for that as Poch does for developing the likes of Kane, Dier, Mason and Alli - who had also all had first team football elsewhere.

It's a terrific tournament and quite competitive. The rules for this year's tournament set the U19's as "U19: Male players born August 1, 1996 & later" - thoughts on who may be in the squad? I've some business travel to Dallas that I need to schedule, so if I can work it just right.....

I was surprised at the turnout for the Everton - River Plate game last year.

*Seemed big to me, but I live in a relatively small area

Would browning and galloway have got game time though if baines, coleman and oviedo were not injured though?he kind of didn't have much choice but to throw them in at the deep end.

It'd probably seem big to me, as well - that's because I'm also a Colorado Rapids fan.....

We later took one of the River Plate players , Tomas Adrade , back for a trial, but took it no further afterwards. He susequently went on trial to Bournemouth , but they let him go back to RP at start of the month. So I guess it's also seen as a good scouting trip as well, and the chance to build relationships with foreign clubs........ which , in RPs case, can be useful later if trying to buy a player like Funes Mori.

Most young players only get a chance when senior players are out though.

He hasn't shied away from having to do that and put players out of position etc.
