we bought garbutt
Moyes brought Garbutt but Martinez gave him his debut and a reasonable amount if game time given our strength in the area.
Agree on Pochettino and LVG, they have given their academy players more gametime than Martinez. However this season the only players Koeman has given game to (in addition to Targett who we've already discussed) that I can find are
James Ward Prowse - first got his breakthrough under Pochettino and played most of the 13/14 league games. Fair play to Koeman for continuing to play him but would hardly say he has given him his start.
Mane 23 - brought from Salzburg last summer
Harrison Reed 21 - 20 mins in first two Europa league games and 10 mins vs Norwich in the league, otherwise nada.
Juammi 22 - brought from Malaga last summer.
Other than Targett honestly can't see that he has brought any academy players through - even on the periphery of the squad - who am I missing that makes you believe he is good at using the club youngsters?
Couldn't have imagined Pochettino signing someone like Romeu with Reed there for example.
Aye, Pochettino is probably the gold standard in the league atm in using youth.Couldn't have imagined Pochettino signing someone like Romeu with Reed there for example.
irrelevant. He was in our academy when Martinez came

LVG brings them through but in a rather erratic and scattergun fashion, doesn't seem to be much planning around it - Rashford for instance didn't go on their preseason tour and just chucking the kids in on his last CL game seemed more out of hope rather than specific tactics. He also can be quite ruthless when he replaces them, one of their young CBs who was having a bad game he didn't even wait until half time and subbed him around 40mins which could completely wreck some lad's confidence.
Klopp (and Rodgers before him) use a decent number, Pellegrini is pretty awful as was Mourinho and now Hiddink. Wenger uses less than he did in his early days but still quite like his approach.
Any managers I'm missing currently in the league who are strong in the area?
Whilst I agree that Martinez should probably have started giving some of the next lot a bit of exposure I don't think it fair to dismiss the fact that he has given those first four players the bulk of their gametime and missing out Besic/Galloway/Browning out of the list of our squads young players is a bit of a distortion by setting the criteria as only 21/22.For the amount of people that say we have a young promising team we have the following players in our squad 21-22
Lukaku 214 career games
Barkley 120 career games
Stones 92 career games
Deulofeu 134 career games (64 for Barca B)
Daniel Sturridge has played 158 career games
Danny Welbeck 156 career games
Toby Alderweirald 197 career games
Jack Whilshere 114 career games
Danny Drinkwater 203 career games
Thats just 5 random players picked who are not seen as "prospects" or "potential"
The point im making is although the 4 players i named may be 21-22 age wise but they have alot of experience football wise and its about time martinez started bringing through the next lot.
We have given less minutes to players under 21 then any other team this season as only Galloway has played who is under 21 (Browning has also played but he is 21)
Personally been a bit disappointed in how he's handled Reese Oxford, stopping him attending the U17 word cup with his teammates yet still not acutally using him in the squad seemed very harsh.bilic maybe? though too early to tell probably.

Yes, the development of Bellerin has been excellent although Chambers seems to have been wasted on his move. Certainly wish Wenger had stuck with his older players last weekend, thought Iwobi was very good both in the Barca game and against us!...Wenger perhaps.
Who's going to come through? I can't see Galloway at CB yet, but he got some good experience at LB. Garbutt was sent out for experience but injury seems to have taken all that away. There's nobody to play RB behind Coleman, unless Kenny is ready. Who's going to come into the side and play CM? Who's going to unseat Barkley up front? I don't see anyone challenging Deulofeu/Lennon on the right side, so it's the left side we could bring someone in, but who is ready? Martinez clearly doesn't think any of the young guys are ready to break through up front, bringing in Niasse and Tarashaj. I want to see young players break through, but it's not exactly like there's a Hibbo in every position keeping the kids at bay.
I'd add Pennington to your list but take off Ledson and Connolly - much as I like the former he seemed to have a bit of a "phase" earlier on the season which he thankfully seems to have worked himself out of and, although it is early days, his loan seems solid rather than spectacular so not convinced he is ready for the step up.think thats the point we were making, any of walsh, connolly, ledson, kenny etc could be ready and someone like pochettino would give them a chance to prove it. all the evidence we have about martinez shows he wont.
