Everton Youth Teams Thread

think thats the point we were making, any of walsh, connolly, ledson, kenny etc could be ready and someone like pochettino would give them a chance to prove it. all the evidence we have about martinez shows he wont.

I guess they could be ready, and I could see that Pochettino might not play Barry or Cleverly, but would the lads get games ahead of Besic and McCarthy? For comparison, Alli (19) and Dier (22) are older and have more senior experience than all of these lads. The four you mention are 18 or 19 this year (Kenny just days into 19), and don't have the senior experience Alli and Dier have. If you're arguing that Martinez sets up his system to favor experience (Barry) over youth (Besic, et al) and that limits the growth of youngsters, fair enough, but I find little evidence to support the allegation that these kids are being left out of the senior side through neglect.

Whilst I agree that Martinez should probably have started giving some of the next lot a bit of exposure I don't think it fair to dismiss the fact that he has given those first four players the bulk of their gametime and missing out Besic/Galloway/Browning out of the list of our squads young players is a bit of a distortion by setting the criteria as only 21/22.

Turning the question on its head a little, who specifically do you think he should have given gametime to and when?

Dowell for me has looked like he could of slotted in on the left hand side even for half an hour at the end of a few games and even with our striking options low i wouldnt frown upon seeing brewster or broadhead on the bench.

Yes, the development of Bellerin has been excellent although Chambers seems to have been wasted on his move. Certainly wish Wenger had stuck with his older players last weekend, thought Iwobi was very good both in the Barca game and against us!

Is Wilshere their last genuine home grown to come through though?

...I was thinking he probably is although I suppose Wenger has been there so long he is bound to have brought some through.

Didn't Dowell get a bad injury that kept him out for a long time?

Like @SerenityNigh, I generally think it a good idea to see how a lad does out on loan for a period rather than give him his senior team debut straight into the premier league level. Certainly this season as we've been poor defensively which is an area that young players often struggle with.

hes been back since november. as you say below about the 4 games in 10 days he should at least make the bench for one of them hopefully.

The way the first team are going some of the kids should be getting a game regardless and putting their name in the hat for a spot in the semi final squad!!

This was brought up in another thread. I don't think he can at this point. It would be met with harsh criticism as it would be viewed as throwing in the towel.

It's a damned if he does, damned if he doesn't sort of scenario.

Oh I agree mate I think he's left it too late in the day to experiment with the young kids, maybe one or 2 of them will make the bench during the build up to the semi due to amount of games.

Brewster and Broadhead are among the top goal scorers in the U18 league , far ahead for instance of Rashford ManUs latest scoring sensation though it's likely that they've played more games than him. But oddly neither have been promoted to our u21s, who have , comparatively , a poor scoring record and a good defensive record - that's Unsy for you maybe. So hard to see Roberto giving them a chance this season, but who knows.
For next season I'd be tempted to gently move on Duffus, Byrne and Dyson this summer, as I don't think they'll make it at PL level, and promote Broadhead, Brewster and Lavery at u21 level and see how they get on . Plus with Donohue and Holland pushing for u21 places and other regulars we should have a more potent attack next season.

I'd add Pennington to your list but take off Ledson and Connolly - much as I like the former he seemed to have a bit of a "phase" earlier on the season which he thankfully seems to have worked himself out of and, although it is early days, his loan seems solid rather than spectacular so not convinced he is ready for the step up.

For what it's worth Pennington got about 40 minutes against Dagenham & Redbridge in R3 of the FA Cup.

Aye, we needed to change the shape and he was the unfortunate casualty but thought he was having a pretty decent debut. Seems a down to earth lad with a natural instinct to defend first, imo was good in the U21 game vs Sunderland recently as well. Getting young player of the year for Coventry suggests he impressed there as well
