Everton Youth Teams Thread

I remember watching our current under 19's/18's a fair bit when they were younger and keeping an eye out for their development. If you vault back you probably see posts of cautious excitement from that time about the lads we had coming through. I always remember thinking it was the best youth team we'd had since 98 and arguably the best crop we had since the 60's! You obviously don't want to be proven wrong and it would have been a huge call to make but I always felt we could see 5 or 6 coming through.

I always wondered when we would see each of them making a first team debut. In my head it was pictured as a game we'd won and a sunny summers day. As under 16's they were the strongest age group by a fair distance but as they get older other sides do start buying in talent. At Everton as well they do move through the ages quickly. Ledson hardly ever played for the under 18's once he was an under 17 and neither did Kenny.

My favourite memory was probably watching us dismantle Liverpool 5-0. Walsh just cut them apart with a goal and assists and Davies ran amok. It was clear we were a cut above and they needed to be moved onto better things.

When watching them I thought Ledson & Kenny would be starters from the older age group while Walsh & Dowell would get a chance from the younger of the two. There were then lads like Davies, Williams, Brewster, Donuhue, Yates & Connolly who stood a chance. Davies has really stood out and improved significantly. Lads like Brewster, Yates and Donuhue (who I really liked) haven't really developed to date as they had before 16. Williams and Connolly have done very well but not quite as fast as the other lads.

My hope was that the class of 14 would be a bit like our class of 92. All of the lads I mentioned are local scouse lads. A bunch of scouse lads, Evertonians who had played together could begin to drive the club towards trophes. Howards comments on a "goldmine" and Hibberts comments about their togetherness have been very telling. They are a strong age group and are driving each other forward.

I hope the best manager who comes in can continue that development. Our academy still continues to produce good players, but that age group was a freak year. Other age groups who are ok may have 1 player who is at the level of any of the 7 or 8 lads I've mentioned above. We had 7 scouse lads from our academy in the squad yesterday. We had at one stage 3 lads from our academy who were teenagers and local lads on the pitch at the same time (having played over 70 minutes). 5 Lads involved who were under 23 and local lads. Remarkable really I can't remember the last time we've done that. I doubt Liverpool have ever done that in their entire history. We probably gave more local lads a game yesterday than they have done in 15 years.

A lot of credit to the club and the academy. We almost have more talent than we know what to do with at that level.

Ledson, Connolly & Kenny in the ENG U19s

Great u19 team , full of talent who've been together a few years.
The England U17 s lost 1-0 to Spain yesterday. They had by far the most chances but failed to take them and ended up losing to a very good individual goal when a Spanish midfielder was allowed to run through mid field and defence , poking ball high into net before Morgan Feeney could tackle him.
Feeney played the full 80 mins and again looked very composed. He has a languid look about him ,like Stones, but doesn't look to dribble out, more inclined to a long forward pass. In fact for most of the first 70 mins he was very conservative with his options , often passing back to the GK or sideways to his centre back partner Chabolah. His strength is the way he reads the game , he always seemed to step forward at the right moment for an intercept or tackle, and position himself in the right place to cut out crosses. In the last 10 mins he made more runs forward as they tried to claw a goal back and showed that he could take the ball forward and distribute it well.Finishing let England down , they should have won 2-1.

So that's the last three games Feeney has started and he's a performed well in all of them. Sound performances on each, and you'd like to think that the coaches recognise he has a pretty good partnership with Chalobah at the back which can be built upon in future games. Physically he's got a lot of developing to do, and in the past England have tended to go for more physical players like Gomez who went to Liverpool or Chalobah. Very encouraging to have a CB come through our ranks , don't think we've had an international CB of our own for a while. Tuck him away, build up his physique and let's see where he's at in two years when he's 19.

yeh impressed with feeney, as you say good positional sense and looks a proper defender. another one to watch over next couple of years.

...the timing could have been worst, though. Have his op and get himself right for next season.
Crikey , he played , and played well , for 70 mins with that injury. Him and Baningime looked pretty solid together against Chelsea, protecting the back four well. Another youngster who's had a good season. If you're brutally honest you have to say he doesn't show the same skill level as Walsh, Davies , Ledson etc but more than makes up for it with his presence around the pitch. Been the backbone of our u21s this season and him and Davies complimented each other well. Best wishes to the lad for a speedy recovery.

Interesting to see rossitter in there having been sold to rangers by liverpool.

Also reece oxford from west ham there whose had games and lewis cook whose been linked to us.3

A good example of why we shouldn't go overboard after a few decent games.

Rossiter was the greatest player of all time according to the RS after a goal in a cup game and some good European games and now they've got rid, although I hear there were contract issues.

Hopefully Jordan can now fully embrace the Evertonian side of himself as I know he is a big blue. Maybe we'll see him in our midfield in a few years :)

think it was more he wanted to leave because of their philosophy rather than them getting rid. could be wrong. i know it's been discussed on here lately.

I don't think Rossiter ever did more than what Connolly ever did for us the other week. He certainly never put in a performance that Dowell/Davies did but always look steady on the odd game he had.

In spite of the usual hyperbole around their youth products he never really stood out to me and regularly used to get the run around by several of our midfielders in derbies when I watched him. I always thought he lacked the physicality to make it. He is quite a similar player to Joe Williams solid but unspectacular.

....I'm a fan of his, have been for a while. He might not be the most elegant but you need all types and I wouldn't be surprised if his is the first name on the team sheet each week.
