Everton Youth Teams Thread

Yes that's it in a nutshell. We'll have about 15 first year scholars join in a few weeks, last year's 1st year scholars become 2nd year and last years 2nd year are no longer eligible for u18s e.g Brewster, Broadhead, Holland , Yates, Donahue, Yarney , Kinsella who have never played at u21 so are having to step up to prove themselves. Connolly, Davies, Walsh, and Dowell also featured in the u 18s last year and are also no longer eligible but those four are a step ahead of those others. Then there's Evans, Feeney, Baningime , Lavery and Lees who are still scholars/u 18 and have featured at u21 level . So jam packed indeed.
Getting it right with loans/who stays will be vitally important. Davies as an example benefitted when Walsh and Ledson went out on loan with more u21 games, and also benefitted from playing consistently alongside the more experienced Joe Williams who didn't get loaned.

Do you think any more academy lads will be released or is it not possible to do that now? Just thinking of the new manager coming in might want to streamline the squads a little (if he's at all interested just yet in the kids).

Would guess more top players stick in U21s to keep them nearer the first tam and those further off are loaned out, but maybe I'm seeing it wrong. I hope the JPT entry will allow games for some of those stuck deep in the squad, but maybe that makes a small difference.

My read is that we've done the business with the youngsters. They either have been let go, have existing contracts until at least end of 16/17 season or have been made an offer. From memory there are about 5 who've been offered new contracts but haven't accepted yet e.g. Antonee Robinson was one. There was a different terminology used, Bryne for instance was in an "accepted" category but I think the others had until 30'June to accept the offer, so we may lose some more young players in the same way Chris Long opted to take his chance elsewhere last year.

Yeh I was wondering what the statuses of the players offered contracts meant but we shall see come end of the month. I can't see someone like Robinson moving on though; he's been given good opportunities when fit. I'm excited I think this years U21 group could be our best one ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw two or three U-21s (or slightly older) transferred before deadline day for 'undisclosed' fees.

Ronald Koeman urges Everton Academy players to grab first-team chance this summer

New Blues boss keen to give young talent a chance before dipping into transfer market

Ronald Koeman will hand Everton’s Academy players a chance to impress this summer.

The new Blues boss wants to run the rule over the club’s pool of emerging talent and sees pre-season as an ideal time to assess their quality.

Everton’s first-team are due to return to training on July 7 with the club’s first scheduled friendly game just under three weeks later when they face MK Dons.

Koeman has been picking the brains of under-21s boss David Unsworth and first-team coach Duncan Ferguson and is sure to have received glowing reviews about several of Everton’s young players.

Tom Davies , Kieran Dowell , Matthew Pennington, Jonjoe Kenny and Callum Connolly were all handed their first-team debuts last season and will be pushing for a place in the senior set-up this term.

Koeman said: “I think pre-season is a fantastic period to use young players because for them it is a big opportunity for them to show their quality.

“And for the management staff it is important to know what kind of quality we have in the Academy.”

He added: “I like young players because they are the future of the club.

“Sometimes you need to sign players but if we have that quality in your Academy then that is the best way.”

That's an excellent response from Koeman, last season non of the youngsters who got game time pre season remained with the squad, although injuries occurred to Dowell and Robinson . And he talks about playing a pressing game which will suit our high energy youngsters particularly Davies and Walsh. It will take a wee bit of time for him to fully assess what we've got and he's bound to bring in a few key players to impose his style but very encouraging for the youngsters .

I'm sure the young lads will be even more encouraged to perform in pre-season after that article. I wouldn't begrudge them debating their future and where to play it after all the rumours he doesn't like to play the academy.

Don't know if you saw the half hour documentary on Steven Pienaar that was on Sky a few months back? There was an interesting part where Pienaar spoke about how Koeman didn't to hesitate to give him a chance as a young player who'd come over from the Ajax academy in Africa.

So what about those young strikers Martinez signed, Hennen and Rodriguez? Any news on those lads who seem to be fairly older than many of the other youth players.

Rodriguez seemed to be signed as part of the funes mori deal, so i don't think he was ever a serious contender.

Like most managers he wont play the Young lads unless they are good enough, he criticised Southamptons academy for not being good enough. He's not averse to playing the youth.

Evertons Academy > Southamptons Academy.
