He never started for the u18s last season, O'Loughlin , now gone, Ben Pierce and Hewelt were only starters, he may have been on bench but think it was mainly Pierce on bench when O'Loughlin played. There's a lot of competition for the u18 GK spot so it will be interesting to see who starts come the new season, based on last season I would expect Ben Pierce to be in pole position.Put this in here incase it gets buried in the other thread.
Hows Joe Hilton getting on? he is a bit of a giant for his age!
Like most managers he wont play the Young lads unless they are good enough, he criticised Southamptons academy for not being good enough. He's not averse to playing the youth.
Evertons Academy > Southamptons Academy.
I think that there are probably ten players there who may not be part of the managers plans , Garbutt, Oviedo, McGeady,Niasse,Tarashaj,Kone, Rodriques and I think maybe Besic as well. There are also a couple of others like Mirallas that may or may not have a future and of course not all of the young players are ready yet to play regular first team football in the premiership, some may never be.Looking at our squad, if we sign, say 5 players in this summer and who we have our squad is pretty kitted out before the kids come in.
New Goalie
Joel Robles
Coleman
Kenny
Stones
Jags
Funes Mori
Browning
Pennington
Galloway
Baines
Garbutt
Oviedo
Besic
Gibson
Barry
McCarthy
Cleverley
Davies
Walsh or Ledson (the other loaned out)
New centre mid
Deulofeu
Lennon
McGeady
Barkley
New AM
Mirallas
Dowell
New LM
Niasse
Tarashaj
Lukaku
New CF
Kone
Rodriguez
Thats 35 players (including our best youngsters), i would say a good size squad for a season is 24 so that is 11 players we would need to lose for some of these kids to get reasonible game time.
Kone, McGeady & rodriguez look like obvious get rids, i dont think Niasse will go as no one will want him, i am a little worried with the amount of centre mids we have at the club as it is possibly our strongest position for players coming through yet we really need a new centre mid to upgrade what we have now!

Garbutt struggled to perform at a Champship club in Fulham, I've started to lose faith in him ever making it.I'd be very surprised if Garbutt isn't in his plans tbh since he's probably the best left sided crosser we have and Koeman loves to utilise that (for example could play the left wing back if we ever tried 3 at the back). Tarashaj no one can tell, we don't know what type of player he is. He'll like Besic because of his bite and versatility. The rest should go though.

He's ability to deliver quality set pieces and crosses is with out a doubt op class.I'd rather judge him on his performances for us. He's miles better in a better team. Fulham were pinned down in a relegation fight all season where he won't have been as free to attack and thus didn't play as often. His crossing/dead ball quality hasn't just disappeared.

He's 23 now so it's really now or never for him to be able to break into our first team. In all honesty I'm not filled with optimism, I still have many questions on the defensive aspects of his game but I really hope he can prove me wrong!
Completely agree mate, at the time the loan move to Fulham was a great deal. Was going to a club who should of been contending to come back into the Premier League who have great facilities and a very good fan base. I thought he'd make at least 40 apps and he'd come back banging the doors down. Unfortunately he had a really tough time on loan, Baines barely played half of our games and had he of stayed he would've got that opportunity so nothing really went to plan at all. We've fast forwarded 12 months, you could argue he hasn't the chance to really develop and we're no closer to really knowing if he's good enough.I suspect if we weren't blessed with Baines all these years we'd have found out by now.

Really hoping he's given a chance to show Koeman what he's got over the early preseason games.
15 months ago I was a big Garbutt fan, maybe he needs Koeman to enhance his defensive qualities. He's got tough completion for that left back spot, Funes Mori played there and acquitted himself well for Argentina in one game last week,Galloway you'd think is also ahead of him and while Connolly is unlikely to provide competition just yet , longer term he's the type of player to convince a manager to release an older player to make way for him. He's ability to deliver quality set pieces and crosses is with out a doubt op class.
