Everton Youth Teams Thread

How do you rate Mason Holgate's chance of breaking into the first team next season?
Highly rated, played some good stuff in the youths last season. I think Galloway needs, and deserves, some game time at CB ahead of him. May be too soon for him. Or a loan out may be on the cards.

Part of his problem is he has been at fault with at least 3 goals for the u21 s last season, and these would have stood out for anybody just watching highlights, and put a doubt in Martinez's mind if he was ready for a PL start. Probably in Unsy's too as at one time last season he was the first u21 to be in a PL squad as right back cover. Subsequently Connolly, Pennington and Kenny all edged ahead of him in the RB stakes. When he played alongside Galloway in the last u21 game of the season against Chelsea he looked good, pretty sound at CB but Galloway looked better.
So I would say he's behind Galloway and Pennington , maybe level with Browning now he's returning , but at only19 there time for further development and it's all to play for in pre season for our youngsters.

I wonder if Koeman will be more strict on the side the centre backs play on:

Jags -- both
Stones - right
Pennington - right
Browning - right
Mori - left
Galloway - left

Seems like a lot of competition for Holgate there on the right side....

Then for the full backs:

Connolly - both
Coleman - right
Kenny - right
Browning -right
Pennington - right
Baines - left
Oviedo - left
Garbutt - left
Galloway - left

Huge amount of depth there and dare i suggest too many players for all positions other than LCB.

I wonder if Koeman wants any defenders whether we will see a number of players moved on which could open the door for Holgate and others.

I'd say Ovideo is surplus now and I don't think Garbutt or Browning will make it. Hope I am wrong of course :)

Tbf, I think it depends on how Browning recovers from his injury. He was highly-rated coming through but of course there is quite a competition at the back now and, like Garbutt (and McAleny), he is older than his rivals. Kenny, Galloway, Pennington and Browning, all with decent first-team performances under their belts - not a bad problem to have.

City Watch‏ @City_WatchCity are also expecting to appoint Lee Carsley, who has been working with England U19s, as the new coach of the U18 team. [Mail]

Carsley would be a good future appointment for us he's done well in Academy/Development roles in the past few years and doesn't seem to relish a head coach role. There's no role for him at the moment as you have to say that Unsy, Sheedy and the other coaches are doing a fine job, but I wonder if we could attract him if either of those two left.

Dier can play at the back too, when we sign him.

Just at St Georges park for a meeting and all the under 19s are here. Going to try and catch John joe kenny and Ryan ledson. The coach rates ledson very very highly.
Yeah they'll be preparing for next months Euro u19 tournament, Callum Connolly should be there too but they haven't announced squad yet but I'd be surprised if he's not. Have you seen him?

Can't help thinking the timing of Euro u19 s is a bit bonkers. These guys where playing in Mexico at the start of the month following a pretty full season for the likes of Kenny. Now they're back in training again for a tournament that starts for them 12 July and a good chance they'll make the semi final or 3 placed teams in Group play off on 21 July. Just a short rest and they'll be back at FF trying to impress a new manager in preseason. Kieran Dowell should have been in this squad given his performances last season, and given his recent statements about holidaying with his mates and coming back raring to go it may prove a significant blessing for him and give him a head start.

So it's seems that these players are ready for next season

Tom Davies
Galloway
Mason holgate
Dowell

And should be subs and in around the team.

Plus browning who is 22 should play more

Very exciting bunch. We can't comment about Holgate yet as we haven't seen him, but the other three have potential indeed if they keep the right attitude to improve themselves.
