Everton Youth Teams Thread

True, probably even Spanish U21s play regularly in La Liga other than the ones at the big 2/3. I do see some glimmers of hope though. You've got Eddie Howe and Pochtetino who aren't afraid to bring youngsters through, and Southampton. We don't do too badly either. I'm afraid to say "Kloppo" is putting together a side with an English core too. There's still a very long way to go but I am hopeful. Our U20s and U17s are stronger than the usual groups we produce. Also I think if any good young players come through at City then Pep won't be afraid to throw them in, going on his history with Bayern and Barca.
Plus it's good to see them keeping the under 20s group together as it would be easy to upgrade some of them to the under 21 squad. It's pretty much the same group that won the under 17 euros a couple of years ago. They were also unlucky in the under 19 euro's last season and came up against a very stubborn Italian team in the semi's. From memory they scored a couple of quick fire goals on the break that did for us, defended as only the Italian's can, plus we missed a number of really good opportunities. We actually beat the eventual winners France 2-0 in our opening game. We'll see how we do in the under 20 worlds next summer where I expect France and Brazil to rival us for the trophy.

Not entirely Everton related but that's 2 resounding wins for England youth teams against Germany in the space of a week. Could the times be a changing?
England traditionally have always done well in all age groups up to under 19-20. Then for whatever reason there is a stagnation in the development of these lads. The talent is out there, there is no doubt in that, but the failure to kick on from successful teenagers into premiership players is alarming. Possibly the only way this could be addressed is having to play say at least 1-2 players from the academy in every game, but scudamore and the premier league wouldn't even entertain the idea.

Think Brexit, when it happens, will have some impact as players coming in from the European arena will need permits. Won't be for a couple of seasons though.

That can only be a good thing, it will give our homegrown players a better chance of making it instead of drafting in some foreign 'wonderkid' who only wants a 'LV washbag'

No mate.....England are very decent at U20 level and lower but its the step up from U21 to senior were the Germans are superior.

Better attitude means that young players kick on whilst English players get too much money too quickly and think they made it. most of the time you hear them or see then on social media pissed as a fart with some bimbo in toe.

its about attitude and English players lacking in that department even with the ones tgat do break through
I'm sure there's a degree of truth in what you say mate. Because good young English players come at a premium these days, clubs are frightened to lose them for next to nothing, so offer silly money contracts from a young age.

However I'm not so sure that this automatically turns them all into bad attitude players overnight. The bad eggs, and there are plenty of those sadly, will no doubt act as you suggest, and probably would have done at some stage anyway once they start getting a decent pay package. However, both the clubs and the players agents, constantly warn both the young players and their families of the dangers involved, and most lads take this on board.

From my experience, (I used to work in banking and over the years have had a number of footballers as clients) most lads continued to work hard and maintained their standards, but for some reason just stopped developing. In many cases they continued to earn livings as professional footballers but in the lower leagues.

As I said in a previous post, it's hard to put your finger on why players stop developing. It's probably a culmination of a number of factors, including players attitude, but I would guess lack of first team opportunities at premier level is high amongst them.

It's not just the young players though. At the moment any player from a EU country automatically qualifies to play in the Premier. Going forward from Brexit (unless they negotiate special terms for EU players), all players will need to meet the strict work permit requirements. As an example, Dimitri Payet would have failed the criteria when West Ham purchased him and would have had to gone to appeal. Plus it does away through all these South American players qualifying through their dodgy Spanish and Italian passports.

There is a potential down side of Brexit to Everton's own academy. The likes of RS, City, Chelsea and Arsenal bring in a lot of youth players from Europe, so presumably there will be more competition for young English lads.

JLWPlayer Valuation: £500k

I agree, but our facilities at FF are excellent so we have good pulling power in that respect, also for young homegrown kids they will probably see a better opportunity to breakthrough and make a name for themselves in our 1st team rather than City, UTD, where they have very high profile players.

Problem with work permits at the minute is a lot of the younger players brought over are appealed as an exceptional talent or some crap; yes they possibly could become exceptional but what's the point in having cap/nationality restrictions if they can just appeal that way. I hope Brexit fixes this and teams are forced to to try more local kids in the team or pay the astronomical fees for established foreigners.

Connolly starting left back for England u20s v USA, Kenny , Dowell and Calvert-Lewin on the bench.
Davies captaining U19s v Bulgaria.
Wins for both teams. Davies setting up one of the goals in the 2-1 win against Bulgaria. Dowell coming off the bench half way through the second half and influencing 2-0 win against USA.

It's a shame that the 4 team under 20 mini tournament wasn't on TV. Would have enjoyed watching those games as large Everton involvement. It's a strong group at that age but I'm still amazed that Walsh has rarely been able to get near the squad despite being in competition with Lewis Cook for a place.

Yeah saw this re Davies "A slick passing move saw captain Tom Davies square the ball to Edwards from the right, who hammered home with his weaker right foot in the ninth minute."

Haven't seen a match report for the USA game but in the team photo with the trophy Connolly, Dowell and Kenny are in their strip suggesting they finished the game. Calvert-Lewin was in his track suit so looked like he didn't get on .

Think Kenny came on at half time. Dowell came on half way through second half at same time Connolly was substituted. Taken from the FA limited match report.

As I said, it's a shame that, with all the dedicated sports channels showing all sorts of garbage 24/7, nobody bothers to pick up this tournament. You'd have thought that there would have been a good amount of interest in seeing a competition involving England, Holland, Germany and USA, especially as the age group involves those players right on the verge of breaking through at their clubs.
