Evertons Net Spend under David Moyes

Net spend is a bit of a falicey really - it doesnt reflect the modern game.

Expecially with Moyes, would be interesting to see his net spend including loan fees and signing on fees etc, of which i would think we clock up a fair bit of cash.

Why does it not reflect the modern game?

Its all percentages, TV monies increased last time round again, tickets cost more, there are even more games on tv, and loss making ventures like City, Chelsea and Liverpool are regularly volleying cash up the wall on overpriced pap.
So far as Moyes and Everton go, we trimmed a few players off that were on the fringe like Hanhemann, McFads, and a few of the youth we'd have had to give proper contracts to. And most importantly the highest earners, Yak, Mikel, Cahill have gone onto pastures new allowing their places at the top table to go to certain other players - namely Fellaini, Pienaar, Baines.
We cant keep a bench full of internationals because we cant afford them in the first place, the benefit being we dont have to pay them to sit there either.
12 months time will be telling, will Distin get another 12 months? Neville? I expect Osman and Hibbert to but they are still edging toward their final games.

It is a balancing act, trying to keep the best and youngest players on not too big salaries so there is somewhere to go when its time for contract extensions. As for Moyes wage, I cant think of another manager that could have done so much, with so little. We were relegation certs for consecutive years back in the bad old days of the late 90's, i'd rather pay a proper manager properly than be chopping and changing and losing even more money on buying off a poor managers contract and coughing up compo to whoever we try to nab from elsewhere.

How did we?

£12mill Rodwell + £5mill later
£1mill Cahill.
£2mill Yobo.

£15mill total. +£5mill later.

£6mill Mirallas
£1.2mill Oviedo
£1.5mill Pienaar
free Naismith
loan Ofoe

£8.7mill

The sheer number of released players is notable.
Drenthe, Straq, McFad, Silva, Baxter, Hahnemann, Wallace, Dier.

MG,

Has this taken into account the current window?

If not then we must be around the break even point as we didn't spend anywhere near the full rodwell fee?

Its as we stand today.

We spent more than the Rodwel money this year, but then we sold a lot more than just Rodwell this year so we still turned a big profit.

We didnt spend the Rodwell money.

Jack Rodwell 15m

Steven Pienaar 4.5m
Kevin Mirallas 6m
Bryan Oviedo 3.5m

Or indeed the other

Joseph Yobo 2.5m
Tim Cahill 1m

Ok lets take into account Loan Fees and signing on fees, lets also take into account wages, TV money, Gate receipts and prize money., I look forward to your thread about this!

We have clearly loaned more players then we have loaned out, but we have also reduced the wage bill a LOT recently, we got off the books 3/4 High earners

But we did get some decent fees for Yobo twice and Yakubu to name 2.

As I said in the OP, this is just purely a NET spend thread.

It doesnt look at any other aspect, its not here to score points, as said it was something I wished to look at and thought I would share.

First off it's good to have an idea of the running total. While we all knew it was low it's good to keep track of where we are and I have heard different numbers. As for wages ... lots of teams have seen their wages skyrocket. It's a function of having to keep up with the billionaires. A team which keeps up better than most is naturally going to have spent more to retain quality players. Seen in a vacuum you could say it's an increase in money spent; seen in the context of rising TV deals and rising competition it's basically just maintenance of that level.

I once watched something (perhaps an Everton season in review DVD) in which Kenwright is talking about the business side of football. He talks about some of the most basic fundamental elements of running a business -- something anyone who runs a small shop would have a basic command of let alone something like a football club -- as if they were quantum physics. There is something very disturbing in the way he drops some terms. It's like a child (or maybe a first year uni student) who has learned some stuff most smart people already know but drops it into conversations as if it's going to make them look smart (but it does the opposite because you're like "why are you proud of knowing this very basic stuff?"). I was far from a fan of BK before but after watching that I was truly terrified. Granted he isn't (one presumes) actively involved in the day-to-day business but he has influence over driving the direction of the club in general and he really seemed utterly clueless in that regard. (Of course looking at his record you'd come to that conclusion too.) He's made money (not own a football club money but great money otherwise) but I think he's in way over his head. He does truly love Everton football club ... just not enough to let it go.

So that's my answer to where the money is. Whether "other operating expenses" is savage incompetence or corruption (I lean toward the former) we're unlikely to turn this ship around with the current captain. I don't think it's just money (although it is mostly). I do think we'd be better off with an equally "poor" Chairman who was more savvy.

We have clearly loaned more players then we have loaned out, but we have also reduced the wage bill a LOT recently, we got off the books 3/4 High earners
Would Cahill + Rodwell (we weren't paying Yobo) be significantly more than Pienaar + Mirallas + Oveido? Granted there is the squad change (we are down quite a few). I have no doubt it's less but I could see how fees and so forth made it relatively close to break even for the summer. They may have banked a couple of million (banked as in gave to banks).
