I agree that it's not ideal to get major deals done during the season, but don't you think we tried to get our targets early? I'm sure we made moves and enquiries for a number of targets as soon as we could, but what can we do if they don't want to come/keep their options open? Players know they'll have more clubs coming in for them as the deadline gets closer as more clubs lose their players so will have wider and potentially better options. The summer transfer window should be closed before season start imo, but there's not a lot we can do about it. The majority of clubs will do most of their strengthening after the season has started
That's the issue though, when was 'as soon we could'?

I cant help thinking if Stones was sold in early July some of the targets would have been here and well bedded in by now.

Looks like it, but for a different reason this time around. The cash is probably there for fees regardless of cash from sales, but the wages situation complicates matters.

I understand that but surely some business could have been done it's not like we had absolutely no wages to offer we had released 4 first team players.

What if we didn't have a bid to consider in early July?
Then 'soon as we could' is when it actually happened.

I'd question the view that Everton could bring in players before that Stones sale. More likely that Everton were telling agents behind the scenes that we were part of a chain that had to work its way out but that we were seriously committed to their players and asked them to 'bear with'.

If so, that was a pretty audacious/hare brained strategy (delete as appropriate).

Defo. I'd have left Stekelenburg alone and gone for a world class GK. That could and should have been done early as you like.

I agree. I think that's exactly what happened. It looks like the board want to get back to the Moyes days rather than the rollercoaster we were on with Martinez which while ultimately a bit of a disaster he did get us 5th, a record points total, a European QF and two semi-finals all in 3 years. That's almost as good as Moyes did in over a decade.

I just think it's a shame we lost our nerve when in my view the right man for the job was available and was dying to come. It will be very interesting what FDB does at Inter.
A ball hasn't even been kicked and you are already saying Koeman isn't the best choice for us.

I think exactly the opposite to you, he's a fantastic manager, and he'll get us up that league, which in turn will help us attract better players to the club.

Martinez has done a lot of damage to our Rep in this league, Koeman will repair it.

It's all speculation though isn't it?

My overall point to this discussion in terms of bringing players in is - wait until the window has closed before we start worrying about signings or lack of

Yes. It's just recognising the shambolic position we are in this window at present and trying to look back and account for why it possibly happened this way.

The big clue though is the very late sale of Stones and the relative inactivity before it.
