I dont even know who Mark E Smith is.
Lead singer and bellend from the Fall. Met him once. My mates band were supporting the Fall in O2 Academy and i used to help them set up. We were stood there waiting for ages for the Fall to finish their sound check, including the rest of his band tbf, who were waiting for him. He strolls on about 30 mins late, shouts "1, 2" in the microphone then shouts at the rest of the band and tells everyone to "F@&k off" before bouncing straight off stage again.

Absolute helmet.

...an evening concluded with a demanding "late night call" with an Everton spokesperson.

The feller's a fantasist who creates mythical conversations with 'locals' who hand him information concerning what Everton's PL referral is about.

The worst thing for me are the lunatics on social media ('Everton supporters'...so they claim) 'liking' his tweets and telling him what a great job he's doing by going after the club.

While his Mrs of her bin on Prosecco - i mean - its all relevant!

Hes been predicting our demise for a quite a time, he may be right from a theoretical point of view, but football exists within its own vacuum and greed and self interest always win out - that's not to say he doesn't have an agenda here being paid by the media or pushing podcasts or whatever etc, that always looses credibility to my mind - "academic" or finance seeking "content creator".

Its a weird time for our fan base, many are conflicted and find it hard t distinguish between the team, administration and institution - so much confusion and thus self abuse out there.

Spot on that.

It's really simple for me though: you say and do whatever maximises the potential for Everton to preserve its top flight status.

All other considerations are a dangerous indulgence...including indulging someone who is clearly as much a light entertainer / social media personality as a football finance commentator predicting (and cajoling for) a points deduction for the club.

Couldn't agree more. January was as lunatic toxic month i remember - prob since Johnson if not worse. It was Lord of the Flies stuff and really hurt us and undermined us.

Staying up is the only show in town and the only priority. Everything else will have its time.

What i dont like about some of the content being created about the club - is it reminds me of those Journos who get excited about a war or traumatic event as it creates content that they can report on and keeps the news cycle going or pushes an agenda - some of content being created about Everton at the moment is like that.

Take Maguire, im not saying we aren't a basket case, im not saying we are well run - i was pointing it out long before the Koolaide ran dry - but for him Everton and the tension and drama around a referral, investigation, point deduction or transfer ban - its good news and quid's in for him - he will be delighted, Mamma Mia 2 - here we go again! .

lol

Ker-ching!

Anything to add a few thosuand more on the half-million he and Kevin Day get for that podcast each week. I've never listended to it apart from that clip about Maguire's "late night call" with Everton. Do they get cash in through sponsors / advertisers?

There's definitely a conflict of interests between offering dispassionate football industry financial 'expertise' and attracting clicks.

I am very dubious about such commodification and the claimed ability to remain objective.

If you look at him over the past few years he is trying to cultivate a media presence or fuel for his own content, he goes and comments where the news cycle is - ambulance chasseing, hes been on TRFC and Celtic, Chelsea, Spurs, Mordor, Leeds, Utd takeover, Us, ESL, Newcastle - everyone's doomed - reporting on big clubs with big fan bases and big clicks. Some of his stuff isn't financial deconstruction - a lot of it is - ive heard "from sources in the club" - the content is more "hack" than "academic". Flip his name with Alan Myers and its the same stuff - yet hes trading of the credibility of being an "academic". Hes working directly for footballinsider - that's i think actually banned on here for not being a credible source.

A quick google news search of him or him and ESL over the last few months - well you will see your self - ambulance chaser.

He's been a university lecturer for over 30yrs, specialising in business and football finance, winning several awards and plaudits for it, writing books, the lot! He's the leading commentator on the subject that they all go to. He knows his stuff, knows some of the characters involved and is literally just doing his job.

However, the best way to avoid ambulance chasers, is to stay out of the ambulance in the first place....... the real issue is we're in an absolute mess, and we only have ourselves to blame.

Universities these days are commodified organisations; always looking to get media profile and students ('customers') through the door (even so they should be looking closely at Maguire's conduct here toward Everton.)

A couple of people bridled on this thread by my use of the title 'entertainer' in relation to Maguire, but that's EXACTLY what he is - complete with gurning face in publicity shots with Kevin Day.

He falls under the category 'media personality' and he's coining it in on that basis.

He's a bean counter who's turned his nerdish fascination with football finances to gain a public profile. He's so 'expert' that he's never worked at a club, as far as I can make out, and just - as you say - attaches himself to the trials and tribulations of PL clubs rather than going into the rest of football...not glamorous enough possibly......I dont think even Mark E Smith was that particular about the things and people he commented on...so maybe not that much inspired by Mark E Smith after-all.

I've lectured for Universities mate and i think we can all agree i talk some amount of waffle. lol

I can tell you first hand that many academics don't know the first thing about common sense practical application of theory or have the day to day skills to implement it - honestly you'd be amazed and some are the biggest spoofers.

Also he's not working on behalf of the university as an academic he's freelancing, working for websites, radio shows and his own content creation for profit as Dave said its fair game to question his objectivity given his goal is financial remuneration. That not me saying we aren't a basket case, but when part of your livelihood is created by drama and clicks - well it does create questions around agenda and objective credibility. As i say hes doing it around the league.

Agreed on the ambulance chasing.

Absolutely this.

Absolutely this.

He's a qualified accountant - but i don't know if he ever practiced and if he did it would have been for a short while- he went into academia in the 80s. Academia is different to practice, its all about teaching theory, research and publication - as opposed to practical application and skills.

I've met some brilliant academics in my field, but i wouldn't employ them over someone with 30 years first hand - hands on experience in the Field - there is a difference between, theory, teaching and research in academia and the practical application, experience, first hand problem solving, track record of success and skills in implementing that theory. I've been flabbergasted at times how high some academics have skills in the former and completely flummoxed by the latter - really shocked!

Not dissing the man or academics - they do what they do well and are required, nor am i saying we are well run, but i wouldn't be awed by the branding "academic" - that all bets are off and you just have to accept what he says without question.
