Former Everton Managers discussion...

Some would say neither did Gordon Lee... maybe because his time coincided with us having Duncan MacKenzie in the team and the media and some fans couldn't wait for the alleged dour and boring Lee to fall out with DM.
Ah McKenzie
There's a name to make your heart race
Pure unadulterated joy watching him play
A maverick of the highest order.
No one like him in the modern game , he played for the fun of it.

Two facts about Johnny Carey

1. Well known fact - He was sacked in the back of a taxi

2. Less well known fact - He died on my 41st birthday

The handling of two top games per week is a salient point for Everton teams and managers of the past, let's expand on that as Howard Kendall was able to get his team of Cup Winners Cup success to handle it okay.

By spring it was getting up to three games a week, wasn't it? Four more league games than today, plus they reached the FA Cup final. Amazing they were able to power through all that and keep winning.

Fun fact - He could jump over a mini.

You'd have to go a long way to find a manager worse than Mike Walker though some would argue Ian Buchan wasn't up to much.. and obviously 2/3 seasons under

Martinez (even with the good cup runs) were hard to stomach. Like a game of football if we were rubbish for an hour and got a point you'd be ok with that.. but instead we started like a house on fire but threw it away.. so basically we remember it as a poor 3 years. 5/10 (being generous)

Bingham and Lee did ok but that's all we could expect.. we bottled it (nothing new there). 6/10

Smith was dire - terrible.. unbearable stuff. but we didn't go down 4/10

Moyes - sometimes 8/10 sometimes 4/10 - no bottle

Royle - great two years - let down by the board 8/10

Kendall .. mark 1 9.5/10 mark 2 6/10 mark 3.. err best left alone

Harvey - following the legend of Kendall was tough. Not so bad but fell short of requirement - team went backwards. 5.5/10

Catterick 8.5/10 - did you know we had more points in the 60s than any other Div 1 team? Built two title winning sides.

Walker 2/10 - for the Wimbledon result otherwise 0/10

Whilst I understand agree with the warning signs in the Anfield derby, I can't agree with the "fizzling out" of the campaign. We were outstanding in after that game. Look at the results:

After that game, we won 8 out of 10 games until we got Tony Pulis'd. We lost only to Spurs and Chelsea away. After that point, I agree, it was inevitable Arsenal would finish above us.

Outstanding season, both in style and in substance.

2nd and 3rd seasons under our Catalan Prince...not so much!

Looking at those results, I agree that the 8 wins were great, but it was those four losses to Spurs, Chelsea, Palace and then City that really took a massive edge off it for me, especially that confounded loss to Palace.

Gordon Lee was a better Everton manager than David Moyes and Roberto Martinez. He was unlucky not to win the league cup and then there was that FA Cup semi final against Liverpool and Clive Effin Thomas! That Everton team of Latchford Dobson Thomas etc probably have the sad distinction of being the best Everton team never to win a trophy.Harry Catterick built two title winning teams and an FA Cup winning team.He never got the same credit that his peers like Shankly Revie and Busby got.The late great Howard Kendall is our greatest ever manager though.2 league titles 1 FA Cup and 1 European Cup Winners Cup in four years. While narrowly missing out on a League Cup 2 FA Cups and a League Title in the same period. He would have won the European Cup as well if he was allowed.1987 seals the deal for me.A side ravaged by injuries and we were 9 points behind Liverpool at one stage. He overcame all the obstacles though and still delivered the league title.

Shame Dave Watson didn't have the "Je ne sais quoi" to turn a passionate player in to a manager, hoped the influence of Kendall and Royle might have rubbed off on him.

I enjoyed that derby match at Goodison when he was caretaker manager though. We got a draw to secure our premiership survival and also end Liverpools title hopes.:D

Martinez was very fortunate in his first season in that he benefited from the well drilled defence of Moyes. That points total was a combination of the good attacking play of Martinez and Moyes' defence. As soon as the Spanish bluffer put his own imprint on the defence the following season the results nosedived. He's up there with the most clueless defensive coaches in the game. The hidings his teams have taken over the years. I'd still prefer him to Moyes for at least his teams try to play the game the right way and (when not getting a beating) they do provide entertainment.

As a proponent of dull, dour, negative football, which reflects the man himself, Moyes is the anti-Cruyff. More like him would kill the sport stone dead. TV companies would pack it in. Just looking at him is depressing. His negative demeanour, glass half empty approach (after first United defeat, said "I'm sure there will be many more"....after handful of games at Sunderland "we are in a relegation battle" (players made to feet 2 foot tall, fans more gloomy)..and yesterday "the squad is ill-equipped for second tier football" (players shrink further, fans search for the nearest bridge to jump off). He sucks the optimism out of people. Manchester United were renowned for their quick tempo, speedy wingers and crisp passing, Moyes came in, ripped out their identity on the field, signed the yard dog Fellaini, and inserted this dross;

Moyes is a born loser with a losers mentality. His safety first glass half empty manner did mean the defence tightened up somewhat (although there were quite a few gubbings in his time at the club...Bucharest, West Brom, Aston Villa, Arsenal umpteen times etc.). His lack of a winners mentality also saw no wins at any major awaŷ ground.

Billy 'the bigot' Bingham I pretend he never managed the club at all.
