Why do people think parking the bus and playing for nil nils or 1 nils is the way to go with this inept defence?

Benitez tried it and it failed spectacularly. Take that Brighton game as an example. He tried to sit deep and soak up pressure with a back 5 and we were 2 down in no time, and lucky it wasn't 4.

I think it's nonsense to suggest we would be doing so much better if we just sat off a bit more. These defenders are bad defenders, regardless of system. There is no system that will make them good players.

I think there's too much emphasis from fans on the players under Frank and not on his awful tactics which don't suit the players we have.

If I was made to do my job and I knew I was being made to do it in a way that doesn't work then I too wouldn't be trying as hard as I would if I was doing it in a way that does work.
Make a thread jj. Speak ot loud and clear

I think the one thing we need is confidence.

Every single player on earth plays better with confidence.

Unfortunately, you need momentum to gain confidence, and all the hard work against Newcastle was undone at a stroke at Palace. Just not being able to get a couple of half decent results together is the problem.

If we manage that, the deficiencies of this squad will fall away enough to see us coast home.

It’s true the defenders are hopeless so it’s important that our entire midfield doesn’t get caught wrong side of the ball.

Nobody has said he shouldn't call the players out.

What I'm suggesting he should do, as I have for some time now, is stop pointing the fingers and making excuses. Basically, this;
He can't call the players out and not point fingers at the same time
The players come out with statements like 'nowhere to hide' but then hide behind the manager.
That capitulation was all on them yesterday and I would be suprised if FL wasn't furious with them, so I'm glad he pointed his fingers, because I am too

If I was doing my job as badly as some of these players, I'd be embarrassed and certainly not trying to pass the buck.

Anyone still defending these players after all this time really confuses me

I never thought I'd see the day (or admit to it) but Stephen Warnock was spot on this morning on Sky Sports when he said that the team need to start reacting differently if conceding first, this lot seem to fall apart immediately rather than accepting that they've let one in and working to remedy it. Plenty of teams come back from being two (or even more) goals down early but our reaction to losing one usually sees us losing our heads completely and letting in a second in no time. Rather than looking around at the other 10 players on the field for leadership when something goes wrong how about looking for it in the 11th (themselves)?

I wouldn't say he's doing well (results speak for themselves), but I have no problem with what we've heard about his man management to this point, and I definitely don't have an issue with him calling the players out. They started that game well and then gave up. He was being very generous saying that was 70% effort. It absolutely was not by the end of it.

I also don't have an issue with him for not blaming himself for the tactical set up. I don't agree with the formation set up, and I'm glad that he has adjusted in game when it's not working, but the players have to execute a game plan. They should be able to adjust to different formations, and I think that's why he's not blaming himself. I understand that perspective. But at the same time we can't keep starting games with five defenders. This set of players just aren't comfortable with it. It has only worked for us in the last couple of years on a rare occasion. Frank knows that but thinks it's a crutch for our lack of quality in defense and midfield. Hypothetically it provides more support in our half, but it's not working.

We need to keep ourselves in games for as long as possible. We need to defend in numbers to protect that weak defence. Give them confidence in a game and as it develops we play when we can for the win. Taking the lead is essential.

I dont see that as a tried and failed formula.

If we had Allan, Davies and Delph to call on I think we'd see a flat back four every game.

I'm very down on our defensive options at the minute. The mistakes I'm seeing are basic and aren't due to a system.

I'm perfectly happy to try and play defensive counter attack football away from home, but we still need to have a structure for when we break. It can't be total park the bus anti football.

I think we need to try and play on the front foot at home though. We need to maximise the benefit of our crowd and that means being aggressive and getting the ball forward quickly.
