Definitely not but we need to change mentality....

Chelsea, 4 shots 2 on target.

Villa, 11 shots 6 on target. Kepa made an absolute wonder save.....

Our mentality is one where we look scared because we are playing one of the big 6 whereas Villa have gone after them, they have a settled formation and everyone knows their job whereas Frank flip flops on formations.

I see Newcastle also gone to Utd and have give better than what they got whereas we let Utd do whatever they wanted.

Do you see what I mean? We have no aggression whatsoever......
All those teams have better forwards than us

Villa are also at home. We were away yesterday.

That's been like that for 2 decades + though

Did you start off last season with the objective of survival in your head before the first game?

No, and this is exactly my point. We started off in good form and then the wheels came off…the inverse of Newcastle’s overnight uplift in form last season, or West Ham qualifying for Europe the season after looking doomed to relegation when Covid hit.

My point is that there are so many different differentiations at play that we need to stop obsessing over last season’s trauma. Further, I think it is unhelpful if we obsess over last season so much that even the most marginal of improvements (like a 15th placed finish) are considered to be progressive.

Last season is gone!

There will be a whole load of additional differentiations next season, the 33 year old Gueye will be 34 etc etc. I don’t think you can view progress in football like someone trying to climb a career ladder. You don’t need to finish 15th before you are allowed to finish 14th, and if you employ that type of perspective you get nowhere.

So it's not the same as last season then is it?

Setting survival as an objective sounds an awful lot like last season and not a lot like progress.

None of us, or most, didn't go into last season thinking safety is enough. It turned out that by the time Benitez left we all thought safety would be enough. This season, avoiding a relegation battle was our hope after all the trauma we endured for 12 months. It would be progress to just be comfortably safe even if it isn't exciting.

My point being that expectations can change very quickly, so maybe we should not hold on to the expectations of May 2022 so tightly. Maybe we should try and break free of May 2022, and not use it as a barometer.

A 15th place finish would represent marginal ‘progress’ that would keep us in the bracket of crap teams. It would most probably involve us getting just a few more points than last season, and us being able to relax about relegation at the end of April instead of May.

Even that’s not guaranteed, if all the crap clubs are very close to each other in the league, a club in 15th place can still be cacking themselves about relegation in May.

For me, this would not be progress. It would be a continuation of being crap.

So what do you think our objective should be with this squad? The heady heights of 11th? Because we aren't getting into Europe and everything between that and 17th is just a matter of a few coins.

Think the aim this season should be to try and avoid a big battle like last season, then push top 10 next season if possible which would leave us in an OK position going into the new stadium.

Don’t like being patient but with the rebuild that was needed, it’s going to be slow progress.

A 10-point improvement on last season is where I would be setting the bar. You can look to a whole host of metrics, but points in the bag are the only ones that count.

All of us would agree the first thing is to steer clear of a relegation dogfight. To me that means being reasonably comfortable in our position after 30 games, even though I'd accept it's unlikely we'd be mathematically safe at that point.

The sort of season Palace had last year would roughly approximate what would be acceptable for me, this.

Tbh, my viewpoint relates to reviewing rather than previewing. I don't know what the future holds, but I've seen things change quickly many times in football, with clubs going up and down from season to season rather than steady incremental progress from year to year.

As a review, 15th place and small marginal progress from last season is barely progress at all imo.
